Thumbs up Tiger Airlines in Australia

I have just read a report that Tiger Air (the low cost wing of Singapore Airlines) will be setting up office in Melbourne and claim they will be the only 'true' cut-priced airline in Australia flying within Australia and overseas - could be good news for trips to Thailand.....!!!!!!!!!!

I flew Tiger recently from Perth to Phuket via Singapore. Everything was fine but I have been keeping an eye on their fares and they are not always as cheap as they make out. Christmas, school holidays, easter etc they are not much cheaper than Singapore airlines. But when their cheap fares are available they are about 50% less. Good luck and don't forget your ipod or dvd player

i have read reviews of the sin-uth on udonmap, and all seems fairly easy.
but i am hoping to see tiger get its operation in oz underway soon.
to have a real discounter on the local market will be excellent, and hope that mel-sin-uth will be possible on tiger.

any competition is good news on oz routes, but as SteveM on another thread has stated it tends to devalue the aircrews conditions of employment.

True fun2have low cost aircrews receive less money and benefits and are in some cases also required to do more tasks compared to the high end workers like cleaning out the airoplane etc.

The good news is that the consumer wins with lower airfares and more choice. The only downside is that if one wants to travel to LOS on a low cost carrier it in some cases requires a few detours along the way where as with ummmm lets say Thai Air or Qantas it's a direct flight. I would prefer to pay a little extra for a direct time saving flight but if i could get a fare for 100 bucks well thats a different story.
