Small animal, which is "aroy mak"

My wife was talking with her family on the phone last night and they said it had been raining heavily (Khorat area). That was very good because then some sort of small animal had to come out of their hole in the ground to get air and they tasted really good.

Now, I tried to figure out which animal she is talking about but I am totally at a loss. I tried looking up some various animals in the Danish – Thai dictionary we have, but didn’t succeed in finding the correct one.

Apparently this animal lives in holes in the ground and when it rains heavily they have to come up to the surface to get air. The make some sort of sound also, but I have no idea how to reproduce that sound in writing. (I nearly pissed my self laughing when my wife sat on the sofa and said "ooouuuggh aaaarrrrrooouu oooouuugghh" and looked like a little critter in her face.)

Anyone that has any clue as to what animal this could be?

Anyways they have put a couple of them in the freezer so I guess I will find out in about two months when we go there.

Dont remember the name, but its probably the ones thats invading my house at the moment. Its some fairly large flying insect. The thais eat them..
My balcony is covered in wings from these creatures, have to turn the lights of outside not to attract to many of them. The wings seem to be some temporary thing they just drop after a while

Mt they are wood lice, swarm this time of year just after the rains, don't make anoise and Thais don't eat them.

I think Hep she may be describing the Tacatan, fat little fecker that comes out after rain amkes a real big noise and they pull the wings off and munch them live. Never eaten one myself yet but been tempted cos thay make real big noise, sometimes so shrill its almost electrical, they do it with the back part of their body.

I've caught them before and tried to make a tune with their fat little heads looking up in suprise.

Bit like a Mud muncher MT but instead of eating mud :- grub = insects.

I wondered too if in OP he meant she was eating cicadas - which incidenly drive me nuts - have to go spray the ba$tards when they come in garden - cant sleep otherwise.

eaten the frogs the big and the small b*ggers, the little ones whole and the big ones de-boned.
my wifes father likes them, but wont eat them from a frog farm, only "orders" them from those out in the rice farms.

rats, from the fields, 20-40 baht depending on the size, go round me on that.

the little ground crabs they eat, never tried them, but apparently a delicacy.

Never tried the small ones.. But the big ones.. Theres quite a bit of meat on them.. Nothing weird or nasty at all.. What I dont like is they dont kill them humanely they skin them while alive and leave them dieing in the market, that strikes me as unnecessary cruelty.

Not sure I would be too happy about rat.. Just from a hygiene / health aspect..

Think I will stick to witchetty grubs

Witchetty Grub

Witchetty Grubs

Witchetty grubs are the true taste of the outback. With a chickeny and nutty flavour and bittersweet after taste they are the ideal snack for your every day bushman on walkabout.
The best way to cook these little blighters is find a small stick in the bush, but long enough to put in the fire without endangering your hands, and then put the stick through the witchetty grubs head. This kills the grub, and at the same time it is stuck to the stick. Hover the grub-on-a-stick over the heat of the campfire for a few seconds then take it away from the heat. Then a few seconds later hover the grub over the heat once again. Repeat this process a few times until licks of smoke and steam come from the grub. Remove the grub from the stick and put it on a cool stone in the shade, and leave it for about 5 minutes, or until cool. Now cook a few more and eat as entree to the kangaroo you are about to devour!!

Malaeng Mao (Drunken insects) are actually termites that lives underground most of their lifes, they will get wings and swarm a few days to a week before the rains start when they are drawn towards the lights, they will mate in the air during a few hours and then the males will die, the fertilized females will drop their wings and find some new place to start a new colony!
I find them to be the most accurate way to tell when the rains will start, usually 3-5 days after you see them swarm the rain will start!
People in Eesarn will eat the kind that swarms in the fields, but city people don't eat them.

Takra Taen (Grasshoppers) are one of my favorite bush-tucker, and are nowadays sold by streetvendors all over Thailand, and are fried in oil.
Saep Iree!!!

Other insects you will see in them foodstalls are:
Jing Leet (Crickets)
Maeng Da (Water Scorpions, although not related to real scorpions)
Malaeng Pong (Real Scorpions, big black)
Dtoa Mai (Silkworm pupaes)
Luuk Kee-at (Small frogs)
Woodworms, Waterbugs, Ant Eggs and so on.....

Plahgat

Not knocking it LIL.I have tried it.It's good.I was a chef for 25 years and have cooked and eaten many strange things.
Guinea pig in Peru--Delicious
BBQ Sparrow in Burma--Too bony not enough meat
Dog in the Philippines--Bit chewy

When I lived in N.Z I used to go to the Wild Food Fest in Hokitika, lot's of bug's and thing's to try.Didn't really like the chocolate coated worms though.
