Can anyone give me some information what kind of watches are being sold at this moment in Patong and about the quality of the breitling watches with chronometer ?

Imho

Absolutely crap generally, chronometers are high end technology and it's difficult to make a good one cheaply, coupled with the fact that the traders know you are only usually there for a few days so they tend to sell the bottom of the barrel stuff. Best place I reckon for watches is Petaling Street market in KL because locals buy them as well.
Howver I actually bought myself a real Breitling a couple of Xmas's back and I'll never buy a fake one again.

One of the guys I was with, last trip down, bought one, one evening. Lasted a total of two days before one of the hands fel off.

Took it back and the sales guy said he would sort it. Went back a day later and they had re-built it. Two days later, both hands fell off.

Had to head off to Chiang Mai for a few days but when we got back, took it back for the third time, the fourth and eventually the fifth. As we were there for over a month, we could do this. In the end they gave him another watch - which funnily enough, broke after two days. So yeah - cr*p

Think, you guys are right and their mentality is pretty much a case of you will be leaving within a few days and as we are all rich! won't lose too much sleep over it.

Even if they get a 50% hit rate, they are still doing well!!!!

I love fake watches. There is every kind under the LOS sun out there. I recommend you buy one early in your trip and get your seller to agree they will allow you to take it back if it stops running. I've found that they will break down soon if they're going to.

My favorite watch is an aluminum Breitling. Breitling doesn't make this watch. So it is a fake of a watch that doesn't exist. Very exclusive. It comes in yellow, white, blue and red face. Battery. I'll be coming back this time for the white and red face to complete my collection. They work perfectly and they're feather light on the wrist. Somewhere around 1600 baht each.

Bought the Navitimer quartz chrono for 1200 B, crap. Bought the black Bentley issue automatic for 1000 B, no probs. It's the luck of the game.

It is luck. I have watches that have lasted for years. I have better luck with the battery ones.

The first copy watch I ever bought was a white face Breitling from the souk in Abu Dhabi in 1998. It has had two new batteries and has worked without fail during that period. Same same with an Omega bought in 2000.

If you look carefully at the watch, you can tell the crap from the good copies, and so far any I have bought have not let me down.

The innards in the "self winding" ones have both been Seiko movement according to my watch man, and are very good copies. Also, cheap is not always such a bargain. The really cheapo stuff on display is generally rubbish, the good stuff is in reserve for serious buyers, but its still worth checking all the buttons and functions work. Look closely at the second hand, does it rotate evenly. Little things like that can help to buy a decent copy.

I totally agree with Rog that the good stuff is kept for buyers who show care in examining and can tell the weight and quality, also you need to know what face designs and how legit ones should look if you expect to get fakes that pass examination.. Also the REALLY good stuff is getting rare to find down here...

I once bought a black submariner that if you juggled up with my little brothers sub you had one hell of a time to work out which was which.. I think I paid as much as 3500 for that and had to haggle for hours from 8k for so.. He had a full rolex box and papers to go with it for an additional 4k.. I would have had no problems (except moral ones) selling it second hand.. My brother got a 99% 'kermit' sub for 1800 in BKK a year or two ago.. Waterproof, crystal glass, very smooth movement, etc etc..

If you want to pay peanuts.. You only get monkeys.. I used to buy 4 or 5 watches each tour as novelty gifts for people.. Often just cheap bad copied (diamond faced el presidente with ruby and saphire markers that a gay friend had.. Tastelessly kitsch a true riverboat gambler watch. ) ones for fun..

This has been driven off the streets here, and even as a watch fan I think thats a shame.. Buying a fake rolex is not like buying a real one.. I cant see that fakes are lost sales, its a novelty aspect..

I have an IWC automatic that cost 1800 B. It's so good that when I took it to a watchmaker for a new glass he didn't know it wasn't original. These things you don't see on the street; the dealers have them locked away from the eyes of the MIB.

Possibly a high street watch maker but surely not an authorized IWC retailer? They should be able to tell a fake in seconds!

I bought a Breitling chronometer on my last trip in Feb.

Its the all chrome one which has a quartz glass so it doesn't scratch. So far it works no problem and I have had quite a few admiring comments.

I must of been in the shop an hour looking at different watches and when you compare like with like you get to know what to look out for. It cost me 3000bht after haggling - well pleased!!

Myself and a friend bought 2 watches when in Patong last. It is the last tailors on the left (beach end) when facing the beach. They have a secret room with the watches in. If you look hard enough yuo can find a good copy here...

I got a Tag Heuer Carrerra and my mate got an Omega. We paid 1200 Baht each and both watches are working perfectly.

I work on a cruise ship where we have a duty free store on board and the watch I have is sold on board. The shop manager believes it is real so much that he sends customers to me to ask how the watch is. I have also been offered numerous amounts by guests to buy the watch. Last week I got offered $1800. I want to keep my job so I have not sold watch to guests, but it's very tempting.

Correct. He is in fact a Tag Heuer/Skagen agent who offers a glass replacement service for most makes.

I bought my lad a decent TAG copy last time over and he is well chuffed with it. Cost me 3K from around a 7K start and it took about 3-4 days of walking past the blokes lock up and making sure he saw me! (Just wore the old thong! Sorted!)

I have two original expensive watches: Breitling Emergency for work and the IWC Aquatimer (Older model) for play. My lad has got his eye on those as well but they are part of my retirement fund at about £3K value. Only problem with the 'real' ones is the servicing and battery changes! Like driving a Jag and expecting the bloke at the garage to give it a service for £50! Not going to happen!

With a dodgy one from the Beach Road you can at least take it to 'Mustapha Battely' on Rochdale Market and he can fit a battery for a quid.............and at the same time tell you it's a wonky watch! Brilliant!

I have a 2 night stopover in KL on the way home and have been told that the prices for real tag watches are much cheaper than in Australia . I also want a couple of copies for presents. Would it be better to wait till I get to KL before I buy any watches?????

Well worth it because there is no tax on watches in Malaysia. Everywhere will tell you 20% off the list price and then you can usually get another 5-10% off depending on your haggling skills etc. If you go to the KLCC shopping centre under the twin towers there are a plethora of watch dealers there and also a TAG Heuer dealer/repair centre.

I bought a the basic Formula 1 there for £250 which was retailing in the UK for £450 and also the Breitling superocean chronometre for £800 when it was £1200rrp in the UK. The only thing is I'm shit scared of damaging it so I hardly ever wear it!

Would it be worthwhile to make a side trip to Bangkok from Phuket. This way I get to check out Bangkok and do a little shopping at the same time. Is it possible to do a day trip to Bangkok?

Side trip for fake watches?

I'm always cautious bringing watches back to the US. I've never had a problem but I only bring a couple. Anyone ever had a problem? I know in France it can be a big fine.
