Good idea, mate. don't let the boos ruin your fun!!
There are AA meetings in Patong at the Patong Hospital, conveniently located on Sai Nam Yen Rd., within easy walking distance from Soi Bangla, every night of the week, except Thursday. Meetings are held at 7:00 PM except for Friday, which is at 8:00 PM.
Directions map and more info can be found at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in Phuket, Thailand
Good luck.
BTW, do they have any Sex Addicts Anonymous Meetings there?

Utmost of respect to you for being this proactive.
As a rule (IMHO): less alcohol = better sex.

Just a thought - AA suits only some people.
However for others the total abstinence approach - (drought), often leads to flood when the will power defences break down.
For some relearning, or learning from scratch, what is known as `controlled drinking` is a better option.
This is just a thought and I don`t know you or your situation or whether it`s applicable.
All the best for the future.

The info on this board is super. Had no idea there were AA meetings in Patong.
As someone who quit drinking 18 months ago without AA and is worried about going to Thailand because of the danger of slipping into binge drinking habits (again) this is encouraging news.

Sorry to read you've got this problem. You will have to have a strong will to go to Thailand and not indulge.Think about it first before harming yourself more.Or maybe you don't care?

I have a question. When you are on the wagon, what do you say to the girls and bartenders, who make funny faces at you, in a very disapproving way, like "why you no like have fun?" or "what's wrong with you, you strange man," etc., when you order a water.
The first time I ever went to LOS, I flew into Phuket first. I stayed on the wagon all the way to Chiang Mai before I broke down and had a beer, probably because the GF, who didn't drink herself, and was not a BG/FL, questioned why I didn't like to drink beer, and get mao nitnoi like all the other farangs. She seemed to disapprove of my sobriety, even though she was a teatotaller.

I have had a number of days in LOS where I have gone out and not had any alcohol, at least in some bars. Normally not order water, but soda or juice. I have never had any adverse comments, rather have I had compliments like "I like man not drunk". On other occasions I have been drinking a little then turned it off and gone non-alcoholic; here I have been questioned and I have always replied that too much to drink means less sex.

There have been once or twice when I got a positive comment. But mostly negative, and especially at Mai Thai Bar, where they look at me like I have committed a crime or something, the times when I have ordered orange juice or water or RedBull. This year I just drank beer there, and also Black Death and Fisherman's Friend. The last night there, I didn't even make it to Hells Bells or Love Bar to say good-bye to Geir and Major Tom and others, 'cause I drank so many shots already. When we got back to the room, I couldn't even make love, because my head was pounding so much.
BTW, when asked why I don't drink sometimes, or not so much, I say, "Gin lao(or beea) maak maak, mai dee sukkopap!" Drink too much liquor/beer not good for health.

Here is what you need to say (I am sure you can translate to Thai): When drink too much wiener not get big mak.

eab123,
there used to be a Scandanavian group that held meetings in Karon - not sure if its still going.
I try to catch a few meeting when I'm in Patong, it's always worth having a bit of extra support in case things get slippy.
I've never noticed any negative feedback from people when ordering non-alcoholic drinks in the bars, quite the opposite in fact. You occasionally get comments from other farangs but this happens at home also and isn't difficult to deflect - just part and parcel of staying sober 'one day at a time'.
Go and have a good holiday, its likely you'll find you enjoy yourself even better clean than when you were using. And the girls will certainly have a much better time.
Controlled drinking can work for certain people but the stakes are high and for some any relapse could prove to be their last.
It works if you work it.

folks who make negative comments about you not drinking are likley alkies themselves.
That said I have not had any comments on not drinking other than "good, I don't like drunk guy".
So called controlled drinkers aren't alcholics. Or more likley a train wreck waiting to happen.

Nah I reckon, sukkopap is thai for health but I reckon it should be 'sukkopap mai dee'
Why do people keep writing little thai phrases, then have to write what they mean? the common language on the board is english, why have to type everything twice? and then especially when they type incorrect spellings or translations? (not as in above, as I think it is correct in this instance)
And Lil if I'm right then she is saying 'Tirak - health!!' cos your being dirty, but there again whats new in that??
