The Osama bin Laden t-shirt
As some of you know, Kamala is a mostly Muslim village. And my favorite local restaurant (well… food shack) is owned by this adorable Muslim family. Always smiles and excellent food and service. They certainly do not seem to posses any negative views against westerners in general.
Anyhow, the other day I went there and the daughter (late teens I guess) was wearing an Osama bin Laden t-shirt. When she brought the food I inquired “You know him?” whereupon she gave me a big smile and said “Yes, Osama bin Laden!”
Must say I was mildly shocked at first. (Granted, I’ve had problems finding a clean t-shirt sometimes too, but whatever prompted her to put on that particular piece of clothing in a place that is also frequented by westerners?)
And it sort of got me thinking…
How attuned are the average Thais to 9/11, and further: How would they (as Buddhists) react to someone wearing an OBL t-shirt? My ex certainly knew about OBL and what he’s been up to. She even insisted we watch this documentary on 9/11 one time and was clearly moved by it. At the end she had tears in her eyes. But would she really care if someone in a restaurant wore that particular t-shirt? I’ve inquired with two Thais, and they (as far as I understood it) didn’t seem to mind.
It also makes me wonder whether or not I should ever go back to the place. Two farangs living here (a Brit and an American) suggested I’d boycott it, whereas the third (a raving liberal, mind you) equated it to wearing a Bush t-shirt…
Think I would give it a miss from now on though, as the 9/11 events still has such a huge impact on me. Too bad as they did some mean curry dishes… Anyway, just curious as to how others would react.

I have had a go at a couple of Thais wearing OBL shirts.. One with OBL and pictures of the burning towers.. Got kicked out of a muslim resturant I used to eat at for starting on a fella about it and it got out of hand.. I just figure they are ignorant dicks but I am not good at keeping my mouth shut, same over fur coats etc.
If I were you I would go back.. Then tell them why your not coming back anymore.. Try to remain calm and polite but thell them your not going to help any business that happily supports those kind of sentiments and actions.. inform them you will be telling any and all you know as well and encouraging them to do the same.
Low season Kamala.. Loss of custom.. I rekon thats the perfect way to get a fast about face.
I had to laugh one day tho.. Thai guy walking along in a T shirt in HUGE bold caps saying
J E S U S
I S A
C U N T
I wonder if he had any idea...

Its less to do with 9/11 itself and much more to do with people proudly displaying support for people that made attacks against the west..
You hate westeners so much then you can get back to picking ****ing rice and I will spend my baht elsewhere..

I CERTAINLY would go back and speak to the owner and voice your concern as jonny says once you have seen a 72 year old thai man with an OZZY OSBOURNE t-shirt on you realise that thais really dont give a f uck what they wear as long as the price is right (i exclude bgs from that)
but if i did not get a satisfactory response then i would not go back because if i went around with a t-shirt saying ALL MUSLIMS ARE COWARDLY MURDERING BAS TARDS then i would desrve to be castigated and my buisness boycotted
i reckon they really dont know they are being offensive i remember when i was a squaddie in the british army when on duty in germany i used to think it was funny to go around with a hitlers european tour TSHIRT then suddenly you realise you are being a c unt and you stop doing silly things like that maybe that young thai muslim girl should be viewed in the same way young and stupid !

I actually ordered the Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign t-shirt from the US, just to annoy a mate who is a bit radical.. One day it was just gone, no trace of it ever since..

Thing is though, what should be considered acceptable? If someone had on a t-shirt of Hitler I would certainly not go back. And that’s half a century ago…
Che Guevara? Well, as a matter of fact I have one myself too, and use it at times to try stir up some US friends. Not much luck unfortunately.
Anyway, for me a Muslim wearing an OBL t-shirt just simply cannot plead ignorance. And besides, she was wearing it in a “working environment” (not that THAT means much to a Thai), and the other people there could certainly set her straight if was just a foolish youthful mistake.
Still not sure whether or not I will actually confront them though. Not that it matters much, but my landlord (also a Muslim) owns the land on which the restaurant is located. Not sure I would want to stir up a controversy there, however tactfully executed. Although I do meet the restaurant owner at the market from time to time, and if asked why I do not come back, I might attempt some kind of an explanation.

LEFT WING LIBERAL MINDED A SSHOLES !
THE uk is full of these type of c unts absolutely ruining a once proud nation just before i ended my 14 year stay in london it was getting to the stage where if you were a white indigenous british person you were afraid to talk up for yourself and voice your concerns like why have i been living in london for 14 years in full employment and yet cant get a council house yet people from other countries of all colours and religions can walk in here and have a house within 6 weeks with all the bills being payed.
i am not a racist and dont want to be one so i left london and came back to scotland for less money
sorry for detouring the thread which is one of my hates 55555555
