Just about there 24/5/07

Hi everyone,
Will be arriving in Patong early Thursday morning 24/5/07
Cannot wait to get there.
Bringing my wife for some fun, food, and booze.
My wife loves seafood so some recommended places would be of great assistance.
Also wife friendly bars etc.
I want to hire a motor bike or scooter and would like to know if I can do this on a standard car drivers licence as I don't have a bike license.

Any help appreciated

Thanks
DB

Get an international drivers license from your auto club. There are lots of spot checks now as more and more people are wearing helmets so they are looking at the paperwork. And yes they are pulling everyone over…not just Farangs. Roadblocks…(police check points) set up on the road from the airport and just outside Karon before the hill.

You should technically have an international drivers licence, but in 16 months and many stops never been a problem, they just check you have something with a picture on and half the time if you reach over as if getting out your licence they wave you on.

See Lil's thread where his mate gave them a diving licence and they checked it and sent him on his way. Remember to keep your crash helmet on in Patong and you will be okay.

Sseafood, its good every where, Pan Yaah Restaurant, half way from Patong to Kamala is very good, Savooey Restaurant on Beach Road, turn right as you get to the end of Bangla about 50 yards down, little expensive, but you will find many restaurants with fish shown outside on ice. Heck its an island and a load of the inhabitants fish for the restaurants every day.

If you are both open minded and friendly, all bars are wife friendly, some alternatives to Bangla are , Rock City on Beach Road good rock tribute bands, Saxaphone Bar, next to Rock City good blues and jazz bands, good thai food, Molly Malones opposite way on beach road good irish band and then hundreds of bars in Bangla none better than Mai Tai Bar in Soi Eric.

You'll have a good time and hope to meet you and the mrs once here.

Have a safe trip dbaron! as Dodger already pointed out - just go to the mai thai bar and introduce yourself...Nicke and the other BMs will point you and your wifey in the right direction

I envy you dbaron,as i'm still several months away from my next trip. Have a great holiday!
I can kinda confirm what Dodger said about the licence. I got pulled over with my scooter once, only had a Belgian drivers licence. On the front it says "drivers licence" in the most common euro languages, has my picture on it, but the rest of the document is completely in Dutch. The police officer was actully pretending to read it nodding approvingly , and sent me on my way again...
Wearing a crash helmet is a must do, I've seen many falangs and thais being pulleded over for that. However I understood that a passenger on a bike does not need to wear a helmet (correct me if i'm wrong?), go figure...
