Not at all uncommon for Thais to drive drunk.
As a foreigner (especially) - DON'T DO IT.

had an accident with a TG in Jannuary
we were both drunken, but it seems that this doesn`t care the policeman there...
was just standing there and smoking a cigarette
my TG and the owner of the car we crashed into were heavily discussing the damage and about the money to repair!
we crashed with her motorbike (she was driving) into a car - fortunately we were just driving out of Bangla Rd to Rath-U-Thit Rd (in height of the Boxing Stadium), so we were not really fast!
at the policestation they were just looking at her ID card and driving license, maybe because of insurance or something?! don`t know...

Just out of interest, what's the reason behind asking this question ?
Do you want to take pre-cautions protecting yourself or are you planning to drive a car home after a night boozing ?

I know a guy who was caught a while ago. Only 4000B fine actually. But he had to spend a long night+day in the "hilton" with no food, no drink, hungover etc.

The tone of this post seems to be that you want to know if you can get away with drinking and driving over here. Would you expect to get away with it back in the Ireland- therein lies your answer. Too many peeps think they can flaunt the law just coz they on holiday.

He's from Ireland ! Probably is pretty normal from all the Irish I know !!
Still Simbo et al are right - dont push your luck here, 4K Major Tom mentions is very cheap (must have pulled some strings) - going rate is 25-30k to not go to court if found over the limit.
There has been a few posts about this before - so worth doing a search.
Geir, Major Tom - you must be talking about motor bikes for small fines like that ?

about 3 years ago my friend had a crash...
he was very drunk and i begged him not to ride his m.bike but he didnt listen me.....and he rode his bike on wrong side of the road as he did not remember he should drive on left side....and he crashed head to head with another farang who is also with bike.....i saw them flying on the air
it was our last night and i did not know about Thai rules of drinking and driving-crashing.i thought it would maybe a few days prison so i adviced him to run away...if not maybe miss the flight next day.....he took the bike and run away.......he was still driving on wrong side while he was escaping....hahaha

Not the sort of thing I would boast about. Sums up the attitude of some people's contempt for the law whilst on holiday. Having seen Midnite Express I wonder what the reaction of the police in Turkey would have been.

A few years back I had a major crash.. Miracle I walked away from it.. Head on into a car and literally flew clean over it..
Anyway I then also tried to run away with my flip flops slapping and got caught climbing the wall of the wat !!! Down to the station and of course breath test.. I fail.. So I insist the Thai guy gets beath tested too.. He fails worse than me.. OK 50/50.. I had to pay some damage but the rest was just laughed at..
Another time on a bike crash back from Safari.. All got out of hand and I ended up in a multi person fight.. Police turned up as I was kicking a guy on the floor kinda brutally.. Never even tested me.. Sent another Thai guy top the monkey house and were totally on my side.. They said it was obvious I was drunk.. But just wanted the issue closed.
I remember years back watching from the blue note bar looking down onto Bangla at closing.. this guy got on a bike, kick started it and fell over.. Gets up, repeats.. Falls over.. The police pull up while he was lieing in the road.. Pick him up, start the bike for him, get him on it.. And even pushed him a little so he got his momentum to balance and wobbled off up the road.. The whole street cheered and they got in car and drove off..
I have heard that in last 2 years they have got way worse.. But if your on the roads between 2 and 7 am then most people are drunk.. I was on the road before 6 this morning and the people through town are just a mess, barely able to balance let alone pay attention..

I knew a young Irish lad who got "caught" drinking and driving in a sedan a few years ago..........problem was he was caught by a tree as he ran off the road, broke his neck..........he was found dead in the car the following morning.
I also knew a Canadian bloke got caught by a lamppost while driving his motorbike after a drinking session......skull fractures, months in hospital........never the same again........
Then again, you could be lucky and only get caught by the police........
