What I like about Phuket
I like that Phuket is a relatively progress cosmopolitan community on a tropical island.
I like that there is a high degree of tolerance and acceptance of individual differences.
I like it that people are friendly and still smile.
I like that for how comfortable I am and easy my modern life is, it really isn't that expensive.
I like the beaches and waves even though I don't get there as much as I could.
I like that there are people here from all over thailand. I like that there are people from all over the world.
I like that can get food or treats from the four corners of the world made by the people from that area.
I like it that the stray dogs don't try and bite me. They are actually friendly.
I like that people aren't too serious, too focused on material things, and are more relaxed then most places.
I like the varied nightlife.
I like how it is never the same. Always changing. I'm never board.
I like that it is a little bit dangerous, not to safe, no opportunity to sue everyone for small stuff.
I like the history. The location. The climate.
I like how Phuket is finding it's own way. Different than the rest of thailand. Different the other parts of the world.

"I like it that the stray dogs don't try and bite me. They are actually friendly."
I am really afraid of stray dogs, but those in Phuket dont seem to be violent, not that i have seen any.
Those in my neighbourhood are so fierce, i have to go to the market with a cane.
"I like the beaches and waves even though I don't get there as much as I could."
As i stay in a city, i dont see the beach much. I dont really like the beach in Penang, decided to go Phuket, fell in love with the island and the nice beaches.

I like Phuket for many reasons. As a tourist with the mindset that I have I prefer Pattaya, however, if I were to stay for a long period of time (several months or years), I would prefer Phuket over any other place I have been in Thailand.

Its the simplest of things that make me happy here..
Being able to get on my scooter at any time night or day and ride around in shorts and a T shirt and not be cold.
Dropping in the market and getting a kilo of the worlds sweetest lychees for 40 baht kg.. Add in some sweet mangos and I doubt theres anything on earth that tastes better.
That 9 times from 10 I can coax a smile from a stranger.. Say what you like about Thailand being 'less' friendly.. But its a damn site friendlier than where I came from.. Thais seem hardwired to return a smile, you just have to know how to work them a little.

Thanks ATM; most positive post I've seen on Phuket for a while. I guess after seeing the rants and Phuket-bashing on some of the other forums I was starting to feel outnumbered. Obviously, if we didn't love the place for what it is we wouldn't be here but it's nice to see someone put it in print.

I actually got biten by a dog a few weeks ago. It was walking on a crowded sidewalk with a dog lying there and I acidently stepped on him and he turned around and bite my leg. Fortunately he didn't break the skin. We apologized to each other. The dog felt as bad as I did. That was a close one. I don't want to think about going through Raibi shots while on vacation.
Great post Mr. Ambassador.

Last night went out and had a fantastic dinner and drinks with friends. Wasn't too hot. Looking at the palm trees. Walk along the boardwalk and hear the ocean rolling in.
Beutiful day today. Sky was a perfect blue. Took the small bike along the coast. The air was fresh. Ocean looked awesome.
I've been here over 4 years and I still feel as lucky to be here as the first day. Luck I can go experiance the above any day.
In addition I have to say my love affair with phuket has shot up a lot now that it is low season. This past high season was my first without some sort of disaster. I really didn't like a full on high season. Too many people. Too much traffic. Not sabai sabai enough. To the point I am debating spending time away next high season. Perhaps I was too spoiled in the past. Having it all to myself. Low season is the best.

actually, it was those random moments that you realaize the most
for me, i would usually go to Karon Beach at around 4-5pm and read a book and down a few beers when most of the people were gone for the day
there wasnt one day that i didnt pause and appreciate it

Sorry but the OP has posted about some Utopian ideal that to my mind doesn't exist on Phuket.
I guess it boils down to, of course there is tolerance of falangs - they have money.
Cosmopolitan community - itinerant workers with little choice.
Phuket, while great to visit, doesn't seem to me to be very 'real world'.

And when exactly did the OP say Phuket was the "real world"? What is the real world to you BTW?
And where did the OP try to point out negative aspects of Phuket that you so eloquently placed here?
He made a post about what he liked about Phuket, that's it.
I am not saying I disagree with your post, but the timing and placement were about as poor as you can get, IMO...

The ocean is real. The beaches are real. The blue sky is real. The sun is real. The trees are real.
The tourists.....well, that's a different story. And some of the Thais are quite different than you will find in most places in Thailand, because they have been changed by constant exposure to tourists. It is the tourists that create the sense of unreality, because they are there for 16 days of drunken revelry, they are escaping their real lives and they want a fantasy which the Thais are happy to provide for them.
I was there last high season, and it's like ATMwalking said, it is the worst time of year to be there, and the past high season was worse than ever(I've been there the last 6 high seasons). But I believe him when he says that the rest of the year is different. Unfortunately, I can't be there now in low season. I only wish I could be in two places at once!! But the time will come.
Less tourists equals more reality. More tourist equals less reality. So the time of year and where you live on the island, as well(is Phuket town so unreal?), makes all the difference. For some people, at some times, Phuket is very real, IMHO.

Maybe something should be added like:
Long dark haired hotties with light skin and a little top heavy who just so happen to be from Bangkok
