Many people have great experiences, some people end up paying for the the whole village. Eg. party, expect to pay for everyone who arrives to see the new farang in the village as you pay for their drink/food.

I have also heard from the horror stories but I can not believe all this stories. Of course, some my be true but some are overdone and I think they are from some books.
As I told in an another thread, I was a guest at a family in a small village in the north of Thailand for 3 days . I don’t pay anything because they don’t want. The family was very friendly and we had a lot of fun.
I also spoke to some Thai’s about this stories. They told me that a good family do not do this (we can believe or not what they say) My advice is, to speak with your TG about this before you go to there home.
I always say: who has the chance to go to a family should go. You never forget this experience!!
So I have a question to the other members: who visited the family of a TG and had really paid for the whole village??

went up to Loei in Issan last year and family were very nice , just normal working people. If you are going to Issan , you should try and learn to speak a little Thai though , as hardly anyone speaks english. i stayed for 2 weeks and only put my hand in my pocket to pay twice ...3 large bottles of beer chang 100baht & 2 chickens from the market 80 baht.
Will be going again in June.

I had the chance once but turned it down . Kicking myself now . It turned out it was a 12 bedroomed air con Thai brothel . If I'd known I would have married that girl at the nearest wat right there and then.
Always looking back.

I've been to Isan villages several times - 4 times with one long time girlfriend and now 4 times with my current girl. Each time the family and people in the villages were very friendly, sometimes totally gobsmacked at seeing a farang. Apparently on my last trip (Songkran time) an old lady came to see me, but I was asleep, and she just watched me sleeping for a minute and then went home - she had never seen a farang before.
I only had to pay for small things while I was there - all food was laid on - but for the first few trips I had to pay for the hire car (not cheap) and petrol but now I have my own truck so it's not so expensive. The parents of my current girl are slowly building a new house and we bought a double bed for her bedroom which has an en suite bathroom. So sleeping together was accepted by the parents, but sex was not possible - walls too thin. But I am sure not all Thai girl's family homes are so well equipped. I could not sleep at my first girl's house - no bed, lots of bugs, just a tank of cold water in an outhouse to wash in. In fact, a normal Thai house. We stayed in a hotel down the road (about 40 Km down!).
Don't be afraid to try it, but do talk to your girl first and make it clear you will pay for transport there and back, but not for a village party or anything like it. If that upsets her, find out why.
One last thing - expect to get up soon after dawn (while the air is fresh and cool) and go to bed not long after sunset - there's not much else to do!

That is true. I had the same experience. Not long after sunset everybody went to bed. Couldn`t find sleep at first but then I had a really good nights sleep. I was woken up verry early in the morning by really loud thai music. Got out of bed took a look outside and the village was already up and ready to start a brand new day. One of the few times I got up so early on a holiday.

Communication
I was very lucky in that I was invited to the home of a non BG TG when I was last in Bangkok. She lved in Nakhon Ratchasima. What I was expecting was a shanty style shack with corregated roof, what I arrived at was a Swiss style Chalet with security gates and air con.
I really did enjoy the experience but I found it somewhat difficult to know how to cope with the endless stream of people who came to see me. I did not know who they were and why they were there. I decided not to try and Wai them and get it all wrong so I adopted an English approach and shook hands and bowed a lot. I only wish that I spoke Thai because I felt a little awkward not being able to say anything intelligible when poeple had gone to such a lot of effort to make me welcome.
I thought it was great fun though and perhaps just going with the flow is the best approach. Expect the unexpected... and take a good dictionary.
