The militant muslims strikes thailand again..
BREAKING NEWS. 28TH APRIL.
"KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Malaysia has beefed up security along its northern border Wednesday after violence erupted in neighboring Thailand, where clashes between suspected Islamic militants and Thai forces have killed scores of people."
"The Thai government has blamed Islamic separatists seeking to carve a homeland in the Muslim-majority south of the predominantly Buddhist country for the recent violence."
SOURCE: http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapc....ap/index.html
I also saw some video footage of the clash on the Swedish TV-news. It did look uggly, but heavily armed thai millitary with tanks are not to play with, they chased away all the hostiles and "sent manny of them to paradise".
muslims.. sigh! It would be nice if more of them could have "peace and love attitude" like the buddhists..

I'm curious.
The Muslim's in Thailand, are they all Thai or outsiders?
Here in the PI we have them all located primarily in the Southern Islands of Mindanao, and they (sometimes) keep to themselves there. The local filipino's tolerate them because they still consider them "brothers" since they are of the same country. Is the attitude the same there?

a malaysian perspective
I'm a Malaysian muslim and truly believe in love, peace and harmony. In Malaysia we have muslims, christians, hindus, budhist, freethinkers and almost every other religion. We all live in harmony. I believe anyone who has been to Kuala Lumpur can confirm this. The actions of a few groups of extremists have given the religion (Islam) a bad name be it in the Arab speaking world or in Southern Thailand. From local reports here in Malaysia, the authorities do not support or condone any of the actions of the separatists in Soutern Thailand. I'm just hoping that the rebel fighting so close to the Malaysian border does not affect other areas in northern Thailand and Malaysia because as it is the Duty Free center at the border of Thailand and Malaysia has been badly affected. Also many hotel bookings for Hat Yai for this long Labour Day weekend have been cancelled.

This is really starting to make me a bit worried..
"DEAR PEOPLE OF THE WORLD,
Persons who plan to visit Thailand NOW are warned not to travel to Patani Raya Region, (Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Satun, Songkhla) and the neighbour provinces (Phuket, Pangnga, Krabi, Pattalung). Patani people are not responsible for anything happens to you after this warning."
The news about the terrorism in Thailand r growing.. Its one of the main headlines in the newspapers and tv-news. I believe that this could get really serious. =/
And Jo2. Thanks, it feels good to know that there are good muslims in the world. Of course i already knew that but it is nice to get it confirmed sometimes.

One way for these people to get back at the government is to attack them financially. With a large portion of the Thai GDP coming from tourism, it would make sense for these people to simply threaten terrorism in tourist locations in order to hurt this industry. They wont really have to do anything other than make news headlines a couple times. Its a sad state of the world we are in today, that people like this can potentially hold so much power and influence over other people like that.

Hi All,
I'm planning a trip to S.E Asia this summer...T.L, Cambodia, and Vietnam. I want to stop by Phuket. With all the bad news about terrorism in the vincinity of Phuket, I'm reluctant to go forth with the plan to go there. For those of you in Phuket right now, are you comfortable with the situation?
I don't get this dilemma... this will only be bad for their countries economically. Maybe I should just stick with Vietnam, the safest in the S.E Asia region right now with zero tolerance for terrorism. I don't think terrorists will ever dare to get into Vietnam.
Be safe!

Go to Phuket
Hi,
If you cancel your trip, then the terrorists have won. As you know all too well, you have just as much chance of being killed in your own country. I am sure the Thai authorities will always do their best to ensure the safety of people in the country. One, because they make money from tourism, and second because they dont take any sh*t from anybody.
You will be missing a great opportunity to see a beautiful part of the world if you dont go.

F _ _K them muslim terrorists!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't care how many warnings there are , I'll still be going to Phuket.
In Australia there is alot of hostility building up towards muslims and quite frankly I can understand why. If the mainstream populous muslims won't do anything their radicals then us westerners will have to take the "torch".
Don't get me wrong , I know there are many good muslims.........i'm just referrring to the islamic fundamentalists.
I went to Bali in January...........and even though the tourism industry has really been destoyed there I will still keep on going.
I will tell you one thing .
If a Bali style bombing ever hits Phuket................it will take many years for it to recover. When I was in Bali I felt so sorry for the local Balinese people who are Hindu. It has really destoyed their livelihoods and will take years to fix up
If a simialr event hits phuket it will really be the end of the "fun" that we are used too

Warning: stay away from S. Thailand!
Yeah, you are right about that Mike!
I'm from S. California and the threat of terrorism is a distance but the sentiment is very strong due to 9/11 and the current war that our current administration is waging in Iraq. The situation of terrorism in Thailand is somewhat odd... I read an article in the BKK Post today regarding the issue. The Muslims in T.L are creating havoc because they want to separate from the mother land. Aren't they all Thais? Maybe, the Thai-Muslims are some how discriminant against but they should learn to use different means to have a voice in politic.
A word of advice for all Thai-Muslims: You all should be proud as citizens of a country in the region that held back colonialism. If you break away from the mother land, two Thailands will not be as strong as today. You are all E. Asians not Arab-fundamentalists. Maybe, there's a common religion but nowadays, religion shouldn't be a problem. Try to push for a complete separation of religion and state in Thai politic. There was an issue here in the States; a civil servant, a judge (I think) tried to place a sculpture of Jesus at his work place, a public place. He was canned from his job because he refused to give up the idea. This is what you should push for --> a complete separation of religion and state matters.
Enough said... If I will decide to go to Phuket I will just have to take extra precaution...
Enjoy..

Safer in Asia than the U.S.
These events get broadcast by CNN all over the world and Americans worry about traveling over to Thailand or wherever. Asia is so much safer than the states. With all the guns floating around the U.S. and all the random violence and shootings I think it's more dangerous over there. I certainly felt that way in California. Look at the crime statistics and murders in L.A. Oakland all around California and the U.S.
Look at England compared to the U.S. now Brits aren't any less violent than Yanks but they just don't have the guns to shoot someone.
Come to Phuket and don't worry about terrorists worry about your **** falling off from too much boom boom
Just my two cents.
