Patong ADSL on TT&T: Alternatives to JI Net?

I'm living off Soi Nanai in Patong and been using the Ji-Net Compax 512/256 service on my TT&T line for a few years. It's fairly reliable and just did a speed test at speedtest.net and got around 400kbps download and 200kbps upload to Bangkok, London or LA.

However I'd like something faster and wondering if anyone has good experiences with an alternative ISP such as Maxnet or Hi-Net. Are they reliable? What speeds are you getting? Our budget is about 2000 baht per month.

Tried the G3 wireless service from CAT on a mate's laptop here and the speed was slightly slower than what we have now.

Incidentally Ji-Net have offered us 1200 baht per month instead of 2097 baht for our current service just to try and keep us

Ask what they can offer you for 1mb line? I have JI-Net Cafe Net package, I noticed I pay 2700 baht/month for it. Used to be closer to 4000 when I first upgraded to that.

I agree with Nicke. Stay with TT&T and Ji-Net. It is the most reliable in Phuket. I also have the Cafe Net package. Spend the extra money it is well worth it.

Second is the top CAT package on a CAT line, but don't think you can get it in most of Patong. Price is around the same.

Thanks for the replies.

They do have a Clean Cafe service which is 1024/512 but apparently it's shared between 10 users whereas Dsl-Compax is only shared between 5. It doesn't say that on their website but it says it on the quotation they've just given me. So the extra might not be worth it. Clean Cafe would be quicker at quiet times but might actually be slower at busy times, in theory.

Can either of you possibly run a speedtest for comparison. I tested on Bangkok, London and LA servers and got around 200 up and 400 down.

Incidentally since we tried to stop with them and change to another ISP they've offered us 1,200 baht a month for DSL Compax 512/256 and 2,000 baht a month for Clean Cafe 1024/512. So I recommend you all threaten to leave and see what discount they offer!

I know I chosed a deal with max 5 shared users, and my speed is about double what you get now both up/down.

I know I was around 800 kb/s last time I did the test to Bangkok and LA, right now I only got

Down 522 kb/s
Up 400 kb/s

To London

Down 438 kb/s
Up 333 kb/s

Hm, now I can find the settings to change to LA either.

The performance right now not that good.

Mine has been very consistent. Always grabbing at just over 800 kb/s. Not sure why they don't yet offer a 2mbit package seeing at CAT has one.

Thanks for those figures. I think I'm going to upgrade to the Clean Cafe package but I will double check first whether they have a 1mbit package with fewer shared users.

Expect your speeds to drop considerably in the next few days when they dump me and my downloads on a shared connection with you

ATMwalking they do offer a 2mbit package. It's 38,500 baht per month! (but I think you get it all to yourself, and so you should for that much)

859 kb/s now, I probably had iTunes downloading in the background last night, when I think about it.

I ended up upgrading to Ji-Net's "Clean Cafe" service which should be 1024 download, 512 upload. We're paying 2000 baht a month which is cheaper than the list price because we were threatening to leave. I've just done some speed tests on Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test at 11:30 at night:

Bangkok 853/412
London 425/330
Los Angeles 618/425
Frankfurt 871/346

I'm pretty happy with the service so far.

By the way we're on Soi Nanai 6 (Soi Thumdee), up the hill a bit at the back of Patong.
