In the long term, I see J.C being a success. OK it opened in Dec, with few outlets opened, and the high rents are putting off some of the smaller businesses.
But only 4 months of high season and its being written off?
If Patong is serious about being a bigger holiday destination, then JC will have a part to play. This place I can see appealing to the more family orientated market.
When the cinema(s) open, it will be another welcome addition for both locals and tourists (in the wet spells) All new complexes need time to find their market. The new hotel will possibly appeal to the business user and the Japanese market.
If Robinsons move in , that will become another good attraction for tourist and local alike.
The amount of baht spent in getting this place finished means it will not be going away anytime soon IMO. It has to be given more time to be a success, which Im sure it will be. Now they need to get adequate road access around JC and move those tuk tuks out of it.

Actually was wandering it yesterday (god knows why I let her persuade me.. I hate wandering round shops) and theres more stuff open on the upper floor of the main building than I thought.. There just didnt seem to be anyone buying anything. Theres also acres and acres of sport shop I wonder how many tourists are looking for a compound bow ??
Walked past the La Casa resturant, wanted to check the menu, within a second a Thai guy ran out.. No thanks just checking the menu selection.. 10 secs later a cute manageress was out also.. No thanks, just checking the menu.. Another couple of seconds an Italian guy was pegging it outside.. Dear Lord I was just looking !! Not a customer in there, tho the other La Casa is nice eats, I may give it a try.
Lets face it JC isnt going anywhere so 'doomed' it wont be.. However the businesses that agreed to the high rates, that have invested so much, well I hope they have a long term outlook.

geeze....my companies have had worst starts to buildings we've designed......and don't we get shi'ite from the marketers/owners......all buildings take a long time to settle in/have a decent take up...market forces will see whether the owners have the tolerance in this case.....if not time + sheer population may catch up with it and or someone new may come in and set it up completely differently.......sometimes looking back we forget about these things....one thing is for sure it ain't coming down in a hurry!!!!...well unless the concrete cancer kicks in early....55555

looks like the 'bashers' are in a minority this time- what a pity. It would appear that those of us who are either long term residents or spend longer hols here like the place and short term visitors don't - I wonder which group JC would prefer to cater for. Anyway this thread has got boring now, whatever happened to girls, drink, ****, feck, etc.

I'd change that. Seems the long stay patong based expats like the future potential of Jungceylon and immediately like Carefour. I've been a lot of "in 2 high seasons", "in a couple of years", "give it more time" and so on. Also that the movie theater is some silver bullet that will turn the place around.
Locals have very low expectations. Sure JC is a step up from the usual trashy stalls or hauling your ass over the hill to Lotus. If I was flying in from London, Tokyo, Singapore, New York, Hong Kong, or Sidney would I be impressed? They didn't build JC for locals, so it those others you need to win over.

Well theres many different bits under one JC roof also isnt there.. I am sure carrefore and the bars at that side love to have the expat / regulars trade.. At the same time IndoChine will never survive on that market (and your right it is huge.. Hadnt really looked at it closely before).
The hotel is an odd proposition. Seems like a business type hotel (not a pools and holiday type) but for whom.. Of course the shops must love the idea as it will boost traffic, the bars, restaurants and Indochine especially.
Anyway time will tell.

I agree on the sports shop, as I mentionned in an earlier post. Lot of people want to see different shops/boutiques. Not one side of the top floor where they sell justsport articles, including 300 different Adidas football shirts.
I tried La Casa, as the manager is the old manager from Rico in soi foodland (near King fashion on beach road). The food sucks. It is realy bad. Then I remembered that the Italian restaurant of Patong Bay Garden Hotel is also La Casa...and I mentionned in other threads that the only thing bad about that hotel is the food.

Maybe it's for the meetings and incentives markets that are going to finally make Thailand an upmarket destination (according to TAT and TCEB).

Phase II in the huge plot behind Expat/Valhalla that could include a MICE center might be something to look for in the longer term - certainly reckon a MICE center would be popular with the delegates - guys to Bangla, gals to the shops - everyone happy !

how do you get that people are "bashing" JC
they are having a discussion about wether they think it will work
i saw one guy come on in this whole thread that i would catergorize as bashing
and i think JC might prefer someone on holiday spending like a whale than an expat buying a head of lettuce at Carefour
you really have some expat complex
its pretty pathetic

Had a nice morning wandering around JC. A couple of times I've eaten at the Food Court at the Northern Thai stall (2nd from right) both times it was excellent food, decent value and to be able to eat spicy Nam Tok Moo in air conditioned comfort is always good.
It has a slight unfinished feel about it as a whole but in time hopefully this will change.
If it had a movie complex I think that would be a major plus and might give it a chance to flourish. Right now there do not seem to be enough stand alone attractions to get foot traffic through the place.

i think the foor traffic will undoubtedly increase once the cinema is up
i know that when i head to the movies at Central, i make a night of it
usually go to Sizzler(if i said that in the states id be ridiculed 5555) or Fuji
shop around then hit the movies
only thing is in Patong, there are alot more food options outside, so you they may not get that dinner and a movie night
the big mall in Pattaya is pretty busy and i think Patong actually is more geared for families goign shopping than pattaya

Pattaya and its surrounding area has a much larger local and expat population than Patong, as well as more tourists year round. i'm not sure if there is currently enough demand for somewhere like JC in Patong

Latest opening date for the SFX Cinema is November/December but every time I ask I get told something different.
AbsoluteCeylong Pub is busy every afternoon but the Irish Bar next door seems to be doing very little trade...2 customers in it when I passed this afternoon.

BTW, Food Haven is open at the (under) ground floor, That's Siam area. Look fairly empty, guess many people dont't find it as it's underground at the back.
They also have a "playground" for children so thats why I have been there a couple of times recently. Also tried the food twice, but the selection is not as good as Big C's Food Land. (The best of its kind in Phuket)

So we can assume the Phuket Film Festival will be delayed as well....not much fun without any films showing!

Spent 3 evenings there for my dinner a few weeks ago...clean place, no crowd, foodwise..just ok....buy card for purchase and then reclaim cash after meals.....looks like a lost making place.

Like I said....every time I ask at the "information" desk I get given a different date. Maybe if I ask again tomorrow she'll say it's opening in October for the Film festival!

Strange as there is good reason for that to be delayed. The Cinema would be as busy as Carefour given the local market. The cinema at Central has always been busy since the mall opened. Wonder true reason is?

Found this on the Phuket Filmfestival website:
PLEASE NOTE: Date for the Phuket Film Festival has been changed to Sunday, October 21 - Saturday, October 27. We apologize for any inconvenience. (updated July 15, 2007)
Welcome to the Phuket Film Festival website. Here you will find all the information necessary to attend or participate in Thailand's newest and most unique film festival.
Hope it will be already up and running on my next trip. A movie theatre in Patong beats the trip to Central
