PHUKET: Girl watchers might want to pay a special visit to Jungceylon on June 24, when starry-eyed beauties from all over the southern region will converge on the second floor to apply for the chance to compete in the Miss Thailand World 2007 beauty pageant.

The pageant, organized by Thai TV Channel 3 content provider BEC Tero-Entertainment, will determine which beauty will go on to represent Thailand at the Miss World 2007 pageant, to be held in Sanya, China on December 1.

The one-day application period at Jungceylon, from 10 am to 6 pm, is the only one in Southern Thailand. Would-be contestants can also register in Bangkok until June 28.

All contestants must meet the following requirements:

- Thai national;

- Real woman (no ladyboys);

- At least 165 cm tall;

- Never married, without child;

- Aged between 17 and 24 on the date of application;

- Good personality, attractive and intelligent;

- Mattayom 6 graduate or higher;

- No criminal record;

- In good health;

- Has never represented Thailand in an international contest;

- Can communicate well in both Thai and English;

- Not listed on the Immigration blacklist of the UK, where the contest organizer is based;

- Resident of Thailand.

Good point, but wouldn't similar standards apply that might include 70% of the girls from any part of the country? Your last sentence is just BS IMO. There are plenty of girls in the Thai middle ground that could easily make a go of this, but you seem to divide the Thai girls into two different camps quite easily...

The only problem with Jungceylon events is that they block big areas for VIP and other/normal people get a bad and limited view.

One thing about Thailand is that demographically there isnt a large middle class outside of the few urban areas.. Theres more of a rich or poor divide here.

Looking at TV and media personalities here its odd how the countries 'stars' are so very unlike the enthic Thais.

agree 100% LIL, the middle class is very small in thailand, its either rich or "heads above water" or battling

the only "heavily" ethnic looking thais on tv, are some comedians, taxi drivers and maids, i know its a stereotype, but its whiteskin thai/chinese who rule the airways and social pages.

tanman, read it as i intended, its the girls from a certain background who become ms.thailand, some mixed race girls throw the spanner in the works sometimes, but look at the tv celebs, not to many real thai/issan faces there.

my wife is 100% isaan and proud of it, but she is the first to say what "look" a girl needs to have to make it on tv.

From the OP, the operative word is "southern region". So, the implication from that is that there might not be so many white skinned, Thai/Chinese in the "southern region" that make it to the national level' let alone the darker skinned girls. I already do know that. My point was that any Thai girl regardless of skin color or class might be able to win the "southern region". Unless, I am mistaken that "regions" are not the first step. In the US, you have to win your state before competing at the national level, and there may even be steps to get to the state level.

F2H, my problem with your post is that under your line of thinking, maybe no one should apply....

tm, i support the battlers trying to improve everytime.
but i have attended several beauty contests in the far north east, and the girls i thought would win or go close, were not in the running.
the wife and female cousins, all picked the podium trio, no genuine issan faces/colour amongst that lot, it was tall light skinned girls from nong khai way or with chinese blood.

watch and listen to the thai boys at the local night markets watching the girls, the beer girls or the music videos, and you soon know where the thai mans visions of beauty rest.

Don't we all want what we don't have?

I am a fair light skinned Asian, but that's because I dont bake my self under the sun, be it in Australia or my home country, Indonesia. My skin type is one which is easy to tan and burn - the worst of all skin type, I guess!

I believe, most Asian girls long for a light skin tone and blond or brown hair. Asian men also prefer their women light skinned. Why? Because, light skin is not a feature of every Asian. Having light skin feels like having the priviledge of being the minority- 'more beautiful people'.

I have an acquaintance, a Thai girl. We went shopping together once and she bought all 'whitening skin cream/moisturiser'. I would do the same, if only the product I am using now had one with 'whitening' effect
