my gf is always coming up with new ideas to make money that she never follows through
this time around it is buying 100 ducks and then selling them when they reach 4 months
i tried to tell her the work involved and the money for supplies
i guess she is just trying to find her way in life. do any of you guys see this alot?

Yeah Gee keeps coming up with ideas, I like it because it shows she is thinking and wants financial independance. Shame most of the ideas are not too well thought through but then everyone has to start somewhere and not everyone is an accountant, thank god!!!

i feel the exact same way and dont like to rain on her parade sometimes
this one does look ok but alot of work involved which of course her father would do and im sure screw her out of most of the cash
her good aunt wants to open a roadside restauarant and think it would do quite well, but i think you are inviting trouble up there
especially since they would cater to the late night crowd

Maybe, as you said, her ideas are not so well thought through, but the fact she is trying to come up with ways of making some money is a good. This is always a good thing, but here i think you could really be of help. Encouragement and advice from you will be beneficial. If she comes up with an idea, advice on ways of doing it. An idea could be to find out what she really wants to do and consider putting her through college or some form of course. Perhaps a long term goal would be better than some short term solutions...
But i am not really sure of what you have spoken about, just an idea for you.

i always offer encouragement and advice
i may not be good at some aspects fo being a bf, but i will say that i have been pretty good at showing her different things and offering advice
i think she finally relaized that life is alot nicer in the village than in BKK
she was in the village for almost months-went back to BKK and lasted about a week and was off to the village again
she stays in a gorgeous house with her own room and bed, AC

and she'll be back in a bic city in an apartment with you in Vancouver. She might make you move to the suburbs. You can become a gentleman farmer, duck farmer that is.

duck review from the mrs
yet pet i thought, i will ask the mrs on the pros and cons of the duck raising game in the village.
her "cousin" is one of the 3 duck raisers in the village, the other 2 are probably cousins but further removed.
buy your duck at 2 or 3 baht each, wait 3 or 4 months and maybe get 140 to 180 each, in town, 250 if very big, 2 breeds of duck are commonly found.
"pet gup" is smaller duck, and in my wifes tradition this duck can not be shared when eaten between family, because problems will follow eg family fights.
"pet ted" is a larger duck, no known associated problems if eaten amongst family members.
high maintenance these ducks with a high mortality rate about a 20-30% loss rate according to the mrs.
if you dont have the land and wire to keep them in, you must supervise, and walk your ducks around the village to feed them or keep them in other fields.
dog attacks, general illness, death by motorcycle, a cut and thrust game the raising of ducks.

They have a ton of land and the taxi driver who takes me there says it is really good land. Her aunt's husband is the village vet so he knows what he is doing
Funny-the #s you have are the exact # she gave me

Yeah mine gets these schemes also.. And sadly theres also an issue of a 'friend' who keeps feeding her ideas that would make the friend money while she does the work.. But because of the seniority thing she thinks its great idea, they are the hardest to stop cause sometimes the friend comes and makes the pitch (cos startup costs they want from me etc)..
The flip side is a couple of suggestions that me and a buddy have come up with for the wives to work, that I am sure would be less effort, MUCH more money.. Seem to have gained no interest.. Never quite sure where the idea doesnt appeal.

I think thais generally underestimate the amount of work and risk in starting a business.
Like Lil, I too have veto not so great ideas while have solid ones (ones that I would back) be rejected.
BTW, I heard the real money is in cows. higher start-ups costs but good returns. The inlaws have moved from water buffalo to cows.

cow review
yes, another relative, this time its an aunt, runs the beef cattle, mangy looking things they are.
good profit, and for sure a status symbol.
the cousin, female, drives them to the village slaughterman, he is a lazy drunk apparently, 300 baht for slaughter fee, the cousin then does the cut-up, 130 baht a kilo in the village and maybe 150 baht at the market in town, but most is pre-booked the week before and sold in the village.
all cuts sell for around the same price, offal is prized up that way.

Hasn't she heard about bird flu? Couldn't pay me enough money to raise poultry in one of those Asian countries!

Hey Paul,
Wasn't she going to work in the hotel? Not sure if I missed something.
My girlfriend has a friend she works with who dosen't like her job as a lawyer and wants to set up a shop selling clothes. I say whatever makes you happy and money.

I think the Thai people have a strong entrapreneural spirit. A friend of mine living in Phuket told me that many of the Thai people he has gotten to know have one business or another they're trying to make work. I think there are enough success stories to keep other Thai people wanting to try ideas of their own. God bless em. I think the problem is like everywhere, they don't realize just how hard it is to make a business venture a success.

its a couple things, i think
she definitely gets these ideas fed to her. with her, it depends on who they come from. a few of the ideas i mentioned in the OP were from her good aunt who is genuine
also, i think it is uneducated girls looking at either working 6 days, 12hrs a day for a pittance vs working less and coming up with an idea. with their bf's money, of course
