As we're on page 3 of everyone's opinions.... the question was...
Topless?
Ok before I start I just want to makes this clear and say I know it is not customary to be topless in Thailand and I am asking this to find out peoples experience and not there opinions.
Just thought a reminder was in order... and I'm kind of interested to know the reply as Mrs Cap will be coming out next trip and we do like to respect the LAW where there is one and there is not an unofficial line of things being tolerated.

I guess I am glad that we were not out there at the same time.
When multiple thai ladies that I have been at the beach with mention that they do not appreciate a person sunbathing topless and tell me it is a cultural thing than I respect that, just like when I am told not to point the soles of my shoes at them, or pat them on the head, or badmouth the king, or put your thai money in your shoe.
Just a little respect for the country that you are visiting would be a good thing, and so easy to do.
And if you really want an opinion and have lots of time on your hands, you can call JB at 1(415)DUMBASS.

Anyone know how much the Hooters franchise costs as I would like to start one up.
Of course I would be quality control on the goods on display.

What would you have done, smashed my face in?

P.S. Never been to the beach in Thailand, got a nude one where I live.
Nudity is illegal in France in public places and this is a public beach, a "tolerated" zone. Many French people don't like people being nude on beaches but many thousands of people from all over the world do it here (including some French), and it makes money for local business etc etc etc.
Prostitution is illegal in France and stamped out by the police to the nth degree...

If you have to ask then you will not understand the reply.
I like to be topless because I like it. I have a great body and why do I have to wear a top and my husband dosn't. I also like no tan lines and yes I will admit it......I like the attention, although the attention is not the main reson I do it.

There might not be a law , where you can read "NO TITS OUT" , but if i am in country and a local tells me that its not tollerated what i do, i´ll stop it immediatly. If you´ve travelled around the world as you say, you should know if something isnt directly forbidden by law doesnt mean you can do it as you like or used to.And btw, you can argue with the Thai People who started a fight with you because of that, that there is now "Law against " it,after your treatment in the hospital

I dont believe you have a great body! I need photographic evidence.........
Best of luck to you. Just dont do it away from the beach in Tourist area's, as the responce you get may be more than the attention or tan you seek.

I love the philosophy of the thread and it’s great to have people actually thinking about it.
As I said before I am able to respect the Thai culture. I have been to many Thai places before and have NOT taken my top off. I have just heard that Koh Phangan in particular was a place that you could wear no top at the beach. I have emailed a few of the resorts we are looking at and just as this forum has pointed out there is a mixed opinion. I have had a, ‘NO’ and a ‘we are a resort and allow our guest to wear what that wish.’
My thread was really asking if you have seen it much there.

You will always find people ignoring local law´s or rules and they come around with it, but sometimes you find a note in a newpaper about an incident later!!
Good to be informed before visiting a country what´s right or wrong and in case of daubt, dont do it.

Let me take a stab here:
In Thailand, in the tourist beaches, it is common to find topless farang women (and a few Thais too at some beaches). Some beaches I have seen from actually seeing, other beaches it was just hearsay, but the sources are good.
Whether it is legal, moral, ethical, acceptable, tolerated, etc. does not really matter. It is done, so just do it. I think as long as you do not act in a sexually provacative way, you should not run into any problems...

I've seen tourists lying topless at Patong Beach, but they put on the bra when they stand up/ walk/ swim.

Hey ub2yoo - yep, just like I said I was!
I just love having a laugh at the "selective indignation" of certain folks who:
a) ignore certain laws to suit themselves (e.g. prostitution in Thailand)
then
b) see themselves as upholding local cultural values by telling a kiwi lady not to go topless...
I am sure the people of Thailand thank them for their concern and "moral" support - and all this talk of hospitals too - WTF??? Sounds a bit neo-colonial to me...
