Flying with AirAsia - 15kg luggage

Anyone know if they are very hard on this rule? Do they weigh both the luggage and handluggage?

Really hard..

I had 33KG between 2 of us and only one tiny hand luggage.. ****ers made me pay for the 3KG but not only that would not visa card or Thai money (in KL) and I had to go cash notes for currency I didnt want to pay it..

1.5KG over per person.. What pissed me off was they were letting idiots pull on full on rucksacks as hand luggage inconveniencing everyone..

At LCCT they were pretty strict. And yes they do the check in luggage and if your hand luggage is too big, they will want to weigh it too.

Well they let some people carry on 2 or 3 large bags as hand luggage.. It made a joke of the policy.. At the same time I had one tiny piece of hand luggage and 1.5KG per person over..

It wasnt even just the money, it was the complete hassle of having to pay, not taking my visa, not taking the money I had, making me waste a 100 baht into Ringitt to pay a couple hundred bill.

I think hand luggage is up to 7kgs.

Most LCCs are strict on weights. And fair enough too.

LivinLos, just curious...
why didn't you just take some stuff out of your check-in, since you had a small carry on luggage?

Because I had only a tiny carry on bag.. And because I have a very low tolerance for ****ing about v paying.. Main bags had gone through the weighing and checked in.. Then I find they wont take my plastic..

I think that I saw on their site that you can upgrade your ticket for about $10US and they won't hold you to the 15kg. I don't recall if you also got an upgrade seat or not, but it may be worth the extra upfront and not worry about it.

LOL. there's no such thing as a seat upgrade as it is a first-come-first-seated airline.

FFS It's a low cost airline, they need to pull money in from somewhere, if prices are down on tickets....But yeah, 1.5 per person is a bit ridiculous...

i believe what they meant was choosing of seats... tiger air offers this service too...

for $5, i believe you can choose the seat of your preference before you check in... otherwise its up to the airline to allocate you your seat...

imagine sitting waaaaaayyyyy behind and u experience turbulence....

The first time I flew Air Asia and didn't know about the 15 kg limit, I was over the weight, so I said, "Here, I'll carry on that one(bigger bag), and check this one(smaller bag), and tried to switch them, but they grabbed the bigger one away before I could get it, and weighed the carry-on bag which I had set one the scale when I tried to switch them. Then, against my protests, they added in the weight of the carry-on and charged me for the whole lot of it.

I've been very careful, since then, stowing bags at a hotel with storage once, and another time with a friend, when I had to fly Air Asia to get to Cambodia. Even then, I just barely made the limit, by putting the heavier stuff into the carry-on bag, and strapping my computer bag over my shoulder, and with extra stuff jammed into the computer bag, as well. Most airlines won't count a computer bag as an extra carry-on bag.

Now I fly Orient Thai whenever possible. Their limit is higher, 20 kg, and they didn't bat any eye when I was 2 kg over weight. No extra charge, didn't say anything. They also did not say anything about the fact that I carried on my suitcase, which probably weighed at least 10 kg, maybe 15. Plus the computer bag!!

Nok Air allows an upgrade to 30 kg and premium service/seat for a reasonable fee, but it was a big hassle to book online or over the phone with them with a US credit card. The premium service is called NOK PLUS: "In addition to the larger seats, Nok Plus passengers will enjoy the privilege of being able to change their travel date without a change fee*. Also Nok Plus passengers will receive a free snack on board, newspapers, and benefit from a total of 30kg baggage allowance as opposed to 15kg in economy class."

Orient Thai also has a special discount deal currently available. When you buy a ticket, you get a coupon for a 500 baht discount the next time you buy a ticket for yourself. I like Orient Thai!

Very strict with luggage weight. I got caught first time with them and got the same run around as LivinLOS, cash only no plastic. This was changing flights at Singapore with no stopover so it meant having to obtain local currency just to pay for excess baggage. I don't fly Air Asia now, not cause of the 15 kg rule but because they are always running late.

I have heard since that most budget carriers like Air Asia carry freight to offset costs and that is why they are so strict, each Kg of excess is one less Kg of money making freight.

Put in that light, I understand why they are so strict. Enjoy.

Thier excess charge is pretty minor.. It was more the inconvenience.
