And, of course, there really are a lot of just great, down to earth, salt of the earth people there. And, as a friend once said to me, Thais are the best friends money can buy.
I do sense that I could not stay there indefinitely, and that even if I move there some day, I will need to make my annual journey back here to Calfornia. But, just the same, there is still not any other place that I would rather go when I leave the US, and I haven't much curiosity about the rest of the world anymore.
There are 3 things that fascinate me the most about Thais:
1) Their sense of humor.
2) Their way of trying to make the best of things, trying to put on the good face and play as best they can the hand dealt them, and to do it in such a way as to try not to bring other people down on account of their problems.
3) Sanook! Their sense of fun, playfulness, and instinctive belief in the importance of having fun every day.
Plus there are two things I can only get in Thailand:
1) The real Thai food that you can get at the noodle stands, markets, open-air restaurants, and on the sidewalks.
2) Affordable traditional Thai massage. It has literally changed my life, and it makes life ever so much easier for me.
|
How has it changed your life? Back problems, perhaps? I have a bad back and find they really help, but am unsure as to which sort of massage is most suited to my problem. I'm also a bit worried that they'll make it worse rather than better.
I snapped my calf muscle playing squash a few years ago and it didn't heal until I told a girl about it - 3 sessions later and it's complete cured. They ought to be on the NHS these girls, although it wouldn't be good for the waiting lists.

For party yes you can be thrilled for some time, but not to long, you do meet some people who have an back ground, and do really just live on the top, and try to forget the rest. Just hang out on the beaches, yes nice, but you can find better! Food absolutely the best I had, except Kuala Lumpur! Well the rest most of you know, tuk tuk, taxis, travel agencies, the violence among thais, corruption etc, dont even need to mention it! Everything look good at the top!

Thailand is great for a 2 week bender and/or visiting some of the smaller, prettier islands and beaches etc. Once you live here for a while, you notice how Thais themselves actually live and how they are totally dependent on farang for their livelihoods. The sheer, grinding poverty of the place and what they need to do to survive can really get to you after a while. The lot of the Burmese workers doesn't even bear thinking about.

Why thank you kind sir. Dutch, eh? Now there's a country. I go on a bender to the Damage at least 10 times a year and absolutely love the place. Would move there in a shot if it wasn't as cold as England.

Thais friends is the best you can get for money!
Total in 3 trips I did spend more than 7 months in thailand! Very little was around big popular tourist places. I meet genuine people, but what the country itīself do to their own people is discusting. Thailand could have been a very nice place to live, if they did some few changees, but then we would not feel like a king with our small money!

I have a friend who is American that has just moved from Germany to America and he gets sarcasm, wit and has a good knowledge of world affairs.
I also like a good debate, but i like to debate with someone who doesn't lose a battle of wits to a stuffed dodo. Unfortunatly, from reading your posts, I would put you in that catagorey.

Guys
i really appreciate all your comments and believe me, i feel exactly the same way about most people on this board. some people may think being on a board like this and putting so much time into it is weird. i have never been on any other board and dont think i will be on another one. i have met countless people on this board in person that were just fantastic people and there are so many more that i havent met that i know i would get along with just fine. Cybernator and Butterfly Blond come to mind.
I am leaving for Thailand on Wed and the excitement is coming back once i started figuring about what hotels to book and whatnot. I am really excited to see my gf. she is a really good kid and to be honest, i will be doing pretty much whatever she feels like doing, becaus she deserves it with putting up with my busy life the last 1 1/2 years. fortunately for me, she is rearing to go and likes all the places my friends are at so we will have a blast.
i probably wont be back to LOS for quite some time after this, so i will just enjoy all the time i will have now. maybe in January when i am off to Central America, i will miss seeing some friends in LOS, but hey im going there with a BM, Jimbulljag so there will be a little LOS connection there

If you aren't on the forum again before you leave, have a great trip Paul.
I fancy all the old feelings will return as you leave BKK airport. Enjoy yourself

But... what about the 100% trust rule you so eloquently stated in the past? Did something change from the day before?

Paulie,
have a great trip. You go with flow pretty good so i can't imagine that you won't have a good time. Just make sure you have a place w/ a nice pool and cold beers for at least a couple of days. Just got back from vegas and laid around the pool drinking all weekend. Highly recommended.
I've been thinking about going to LOS in April ( frequent flyer miles burning a hole in my pocket) but not sure. Probably more excited about checking out more of cambo. Maybe dirt biking around bokor.
Nevertheless, I'll see you in Managua in Jan. I'm definitely excited about that trip.
have fun,
JJ

although i still believe you are a miserable bastard
i do still think you are a very intelligent man
so where in my saying " i have zero use for you" does that come off as me asking for any input or advise from you. Come on TM, where are form the same country, we should understand each other. just ignore me like i will ignore you. it is what is best for the board. have a nice night

Steven, I don't like to speak up in a dispute that is between others, especially when they are both guys that I consider to be my friends, but this is really getting old. Would appreciate it greatly if you could just back off. Thanks!
Your friend,
JayBee

Whilst I quite like the insult, and may make use of it in future, I think you're falling into the classic trap of reguritating what others have said about me without reading what I've actually written.
