Negative Posts

There does seem to be more and more of them these days on the forum.

Posting should be about writing things that people may want to read or learn from, at its purest form it is very useful. A questions or advice centre, great often for technical questions for specific industries etc.

But there are a lot of posts which just amount to people having another go at someone because they have posted something, which is not really in the spirit of what the community is about.

A lot of comments which are written in posts would never be spoken in person face to face becasue they are just rude or offensive.

and that is not in the spirit of what the board was introduced for and what Nicke (I am sure had in mind when he started it) and it was not what I had hoped it would become when I joined in 2002.

I dont remember reading a post from Nicke where he has slagged anyone off and God knows he must have had more reason than most.

There is also the overwhelming desire now for people to get their post numbers up by just posting something to say.

This is not a reference any particular post it is just an observation which saddens me,as it wan't always this bad maybe a comment on life in general;

Lord of The Flies would sum it up quite well I suppose. Maybe the Jungle Fever is getting to us all.

Kind Regards

Drew

You have made a good observation Drew, and its difficult to see the reason for some of the negativity.
I too, have been guilty of making some negative posts at times, usually in reply to something stupid that has been posted, but not always. In the past I'd just not reply, but catch myself doing it from time to time.

I suppose in a way, as this forum has grown over the years, there is almost a limit to the number of questions that can be posed that haven't been asked already. The forum, being a meeting place for a lot of LT members and friends, continues to have a lot of posting, but more personal stuff than the general Q & A.
There is also a lot more social interplay within the forum, and from time to time things are said which can get out of hand. Its the nature of forums I feel. They don't always run smoothly.

Hopefully, what you have pointed out is just a passing phase in the development of Phuket-info forum.

Drew.....l think you need to join a Forum in Utopia.

Was this post made due to a few "Deja vu" snipes on one of your threads a few days ago?....l know you say it is not made due to any particular post.....but at a quick glance it looks like you have deleted that thread.

Actually, I wrote a poem about the subject of pissing contests, and was going to post it, but as it would most likely only be deleted anyway, I guess I'll just have to say, "No Further Comment." Hope my recalcitrance to elaborate is not found to be offensive to anyone!

Well Drew,
I do no disagree with your observation ... better yet, I mostly do agree with you.
But look what you have done ... BM's are now speaking in poems.
That is worse than a little flaming.

In 1969, "Get Together" was a top hit tune by The Youngbloods, a San Francisco/Marin band.

The song was first recorded by the Jefferson Airplane, and then by The Youngbloods, but gained no notice, and soon faded into obscurity. A few years later in 1969, it was used on a TV commercial, which prompted the record company to re-release the Youngblood's version which was used in the commercial. Overnight, it soared to the top of the charts and has been one of those familiar tunes to many since then.

I like the post Drew. At first I joined this forum to learn more about how to deal with the nightlife in Phuket. It was a great help to me for sure.

Upon coming back from my trip in Nov 2006, I felt kind of at home here and it is good to share your experiences in certain threads. I also feel that through this forum, you extend your friends world wide.

There are a few people, however, that fall in the category you mentioned. Flaming is fine, just like arguing on subjects, as loong as you do it with som respect for the other posters. That last thing seems to go down a bit lately. Undoubtedly, I may be guilty too.

But all-inall, this forum is just great!

I was thinking about moving to Hua Hin and joining some of my friends there. I've been watching the Hua Hin forum and have changed my mind. It seems people there have Hua Hin fever or something like that. When someone posts others unmercifully jump on him like a rat in a trap. Name calling, hateful comments, and negativity in general is the norm.
I think this forum is far above the Hua Hin forum and hopefully it will stay that way. People in Phuket seem to be much happier than in other places in Thailand.

Got to agree with you here Drew. What pi$$es me off is those who repeat old posts............or give their thread a headline that has nothing to do with the content just to lure people in....

I think this forum works pretty well. Not to much flaming and active mods that keep the boards clean.

The biggest difference from other forums I would say is Phuket forum has by far the biggest number of completey useless posts that I have ever seen. I think this is becuase people want to raise their own postcounts more than they want to help people/have knowledge.

EDIT: Im not a member of any other LOS forums thou.

I suggest to remove postcounts from the profile. If the mods want newbs to be able to see who has posted a lot just keep the status of the membership visible in the profile. That is enough imho. Dont mention the levels. Just let that be a surprise for those who enjoy the forum and stick around.

There is also an option in the software where you can activate a "thanks to OP button" so you do not need 23 posts saying "thanks for posting" to OP.

All in all this is a very good board and I drop in like 10 times a day....=)

The post count is an interesting point. I think some people do think that having lots of posts and a senior member status somehow makes them more right, more knowing and knowledgeable than others. Perhaps they seek the standing and prestige that they cannot attain in real life? I just find it amusing.

But it happens on all forums, so what can u do except ignore them.

As for Phuket, there are plenty of positives and negatives about the place, i prefer it over Bangkok or Pattaya, but other mates of mine prefer Pattaya, its just all personal choice I guess.
