I'm not talking "dry" in the weather sense. There is more than enough rain here right now.

A nationwide referendum will be held in Costa Rica on Sunday, October 7 to determine if the country will approve becoming part of the Central America Free Trade Agreement with the United States. According to law, on the day before, day of, and day following any election, all alcohol sales are prohibited. Bars and liquor stores must close, and restaurants and hotel dining rooms may only serve soft drinks.

Just an FYI if you plan to be in Costa Rica that weekend

I wonder why this takes place in 3rd world countries?

"Sober" elections means: "dont spent the money I gave you(to vote me) on drinking; use them to get a bus to go vote me!

in the States, the bars are usually pretty crowded the night of the Holiday
also, the night before Thanksgiving, the local bars are packed to the roof with people coming home for the holiday
best night of the year for me

It wasn't that long ago that Canadian laws were changed to allow bars to open while polls were open.

I guess there was a time when candidates would go into the local pub and buy rounds and usher the drunks into the booth to vote for them.

Yeah, I only can guess someone remembered the saying:

I think it is also to reduce the chances of violence happening over political differences.

True, good point.

Although, I could never see myself getting violant in any circumstances because of politics.
I would take my pint and leave to the next quite corner 5555

But yes, you see it on TV all the time.

And now you got me thinking, Marc asked why this happens in 3rd world countries mostly.
Only can guess because I don't live in a poverty situation and don't care too much.

It might be the complete opposite if you have not much hope and feelings get crocked up.
