Marrying locally or overseas?

Are there any law changes if an Australian guy marries his Thai girl in his home country? Is this viewed by the Thai gov laws in the same way as marrying locally?
Experienced answers please.

I believe so, but I was married in Thailand, so I can't answer from personal experience. In the past, and I'm sure its still the same, the girl had 90 days to change the name on all her identifications, which is way easier to do in Thailand.

All I can say is that it is wayyyyyy cheaper to get married in Thailand. It cost me the huge sum of B20 for the registration, and then whatever was eaten and drunk afterwards. My mate recently got married in Sydney, and it cost him AUD90K. Wot da!!!

If you want a real answer, I suggest you drop into your local Thai embassy. Or form a less formal response checkout the forums at thaivisa.com

Thanks Steve, so I guess the marriage papers are totally recognized in Oz?

Not 100% true (Look it up on the NSW birth, deaths and marriges website)

Depends on which state in Aus you are in.

If you live in NSW, and you get married in Thailand, it will be 100% legit in Thailand ONLY. As NSW does not recognise any other marriges from any other country whatsoever, unless a specific procedure is carred out)

If you are planning to get married in Thailand and you want it to be legit in Australia you need to...

Submit application in NSW at least 1 month and one day in advance eg. papers stating...I such and such wish to marry on such and such date. Plus other papers stating that both parties are single (not currently married etc)

Once that is done you need to wait for the official papers from the births, deaths and marriges office.

Once you have those papers, you then (both parties) need to go to the Australian Embassy in Bangkok and have the papers stamped.

Only then will it be recognised in aus.

If you can't do that, I suggest you just have a wedding ceremony in Thailand (unofficial) and when you get back to Aus, you can then do the above paperwork and head down to the marridge registry and have a quick ceremony, which can cost as little as $100AU

Check it out here......http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/marriages/...sMarriages.htm

Looks like things have changed then. The Australian embassy in Bangkok recognises marriages in Thailand, at least they did 8 years ago, or is this something completely different??

Yes things have changed in the past 8 years.

The web link that I posted before has all the info.

You need to be a bit more specific, we could be talking about a different specific situation.

I think by what you mean in your last post is:

Your AUSTRALIAN wedding IS recognised in THAILAND......Yes that is the case because it comes under THAI laws and NOT australian.

But it does not work when reversed. (not anymore) It may have been different some time ago, but things have changed. (in australia)

You have to read the website link a bit more thoroughly to understand what I am trying to say.

I knew a laddy who wanted to marry me, but NOT in Thailand.
Why ?
Thai law is clear: only weddings registered in Thailand are recognized by local authority so if you marry overseas, your wife is officially single in Thailand. You can easily imagine the consequences. My only advice is: marry her in Thailand. If she refuses, she has probably something wrong in mind.....
