Carrefour Price Hike !

I used to buy a block of cheese for 80 THB now its 100 THB.

The ready to eat Lasagne started at 50 THB then went upto 100 THb...then back down to 50 then back upto 100 and so on again and again.

Whats with the prices in this place? I am sure other items that I don't buy have the same eratic pricing.

Never did like the French!

Thanks for listenin..just had to get this off my chest.

Its not only Carrefour MH ... TOPS (Central), BigC and Lotus all do the same

For example 'Langford's' traditional British pork sausages - before 99 Baht - now 200 Baht - go figure ... ok oil may be at a record but doesnt justify a >100% price jump and thats not the only thing... inflation in food stuff is rampant the past year - I'd say ~10%++ across the board.

Also it seems to be just oddball.. I used to get slabs of guiness tinnies in Macro..

First time 195 a can, next time 250 a can, then 240 a can then 200.. Just expect a different price each time.

One time they misspriced the guiness cans at blackthorn price, 95 baht per can. Both black large size tinnies next to each other on the rack. Superb

The pricing in LOS makes me wonder sometimes!!!!
I was asked, by my sister, to get a bottle of perfume.... the wives of the guys I was with went down to Central Festival and found it for 2800Baht per bottle. I couldn't be shagged going all the way down there to get it, so I thought I would make up some excuse to my sister!!!!
While waiting to board at Phuket Airport, I wandered into the duty free to have a look. The same perfume was for sale at 1850Baht for 2 bottles!!!! One of the ladies also uses this stuff so altogether it only cost a little more than 1 bottle for 4, then we got a 10% discount!!!!
Needless to say, my sister now thinks I am a Demi God!!!!!

We get the same in the UK supermarkets really - put something on offer or discounted then jack the prices once people are buying it. Then drop it again when everyone is mysteriously not buying that product anymore.

Thats what I thought Brit, its pretty much universal supermarket marketing isn't it? few loss leader items, few over the top priced items, hoping people do not check and then a large amount of items on the yo yoing scale.

One of my clients ran a fairly large printing business just supplying one supermarket with their bar codes, packaging and signage, always changing almost daily many things.

It's not only the pricing that's erratic but also the way they refill or not their stock... this is true for the non food section where items once sold out never get replaced. So if you see something you like you better buy it because tomorrow they might not sell it anymore.

I hope this will not spread to the food section as I noticed that butter is getting really thin in supply....

i dont buy too many euro luxuries when i am in thailand, but for sure i have noticed the price fluctuations on items favoured by farangs.

slow moving items, bonus figures for extra sales, rebates from suppliers all way up to the pricing policy in supermarkets.

one thing i did learn last trip was to buy the johnnie walker green label in laos at the duty free, 100$ us for 4 bottles, at suva it was more like 200$.
mind you my father whom i buy it for, drinks it at the same rate as the cheap and nasties he buys back in oz.

told the wife next trip its a border run for her and her mum to stock up on the good stuff.
father in law and i will sit and have a drink (beer for me and green tea for him), father in law will not be dragged to laos for any reason.

on the reverse side it happens here in oz, at the 2 shops which sell thai food its stock up when you see it because its always slow to be replaced.

most of the issan favourites are available, fortunately the wife now understands dont buy, 1 box of ma ma noodles, 1 jar of pla raa or pickled chillies its buy 4 because next time we shop the stock maybe is out.

This is the way supermarkets run all over the world, running specials to get the customers in, then they buy all their food stocks there, majority of which are not on special. Price variations explained by reguarly changing items that are on special.

Heh Lil, I've still got one full large tub, we should have a special marmite munching party, lashings of the stuff on toasty soldiers, take loads of pictures but not invite Landofsmiles, just mail the pics to him, 55555555555!!!!

Whats great is I've not found one single Thai who remotely likes it, so the whole supply is just for my consumption.

(sorry got a bit over excited about marmite there, I'll try to adjust, havn't been out for awhile)

Last jar left their shelves a few months ago and can't see that they've restocked

Got a mate travelling out in a couple of weeks going to bring me some big jars. Cheese and marmite toasties.....mmmmmm, yummy.

I have a housemate who rents the lower level.. He works offshore and transits the UK on route to Caribbean every month.. Means we can stay well stocked on all those essentials

I am lead to believe that 'John' who supplies food stuffs to many of the bars either will very soon or already does supply marmite, colemans, etc etc..
