That is better news than could be expected. Other eye-witness reports suggest that anyone getting out alive is lucky.

I used the same flight when I came in from BKK a couple of weeks ago. It could have happened to anyone.

There were a couple of torrential downpours this afternoon. The runway was probably covered in water.

Sorry to hear this tragic news......Phuket has an amazing ability for headlines.

l'm thinking l am quite satisfied by making the decision to cut my trip short....l was only 50/50 about coming down to Phuket......but it woulda been today....and on a cheap airline......not sure what time it took off, but l would been looking for a flight about 1 or 2pm from Bkk

The swedes phoned home and basically what they are saying to the newspapers are that they were sitting next to an emergency exit, and when the plane crashed they got out trough the emergency exit and that they helped in getting about 30 persons out before the plane caught fire. So apparently the plane didnt catch fire directly on impact.

My Oz GF is getting all nervous about my upcoming holiday. I have been talking to her about the very low risk with jet flight overall - but she aint buying it.

I think it's just very unlucky for those on that flight.

Leave the airline alone please

Remarks judging the airline to blame are at best premature and at worst, very insensitive, especially for any relatives searching the web for information. Please leave future 20/20 hindsight comments out Nicke, they serve no purpose and may even hurt some people.
Don't want to start a flame war here, but guys, its not good to be smart after the event at a time like this and to do so frankly casts you in bad light. Especially when the actual cause is unclear.

Terribly sad day for all involved.
You just don't think anything like this would happen in what I see as a paradise like Phuket.
I also hope no BM's are involved that would be double tragedy.
I feel so sorry for the dead and injured and their families.

Actually, two guests that checked in here were supposed to be on that flight. Got to the airport a little early and were rushed onto another flight. Weird thing about is they were pulling away from phuket airport and witnessed the flight they were supposed to be on, skid off the runway and catch fire, then burst into flames. They still have the tickets for that flight ....OG269.....unreal. The luckiest guys I know.

Just seen an interview on Thai TV with an Irishman named john. He said the flight was mainly foreigners. He was travelling with his friend william who is currently in surgery. He also said he had been very badly burned himself.

Boke was remarkably calm and lucid considering.

Lucky Escape

Terrible news...

Luckily my friend, who has a bar here in Patong, changed his flight at the last minute as it was full and so he couldn't get his TGF on.
He is very worried as he was with some other BM's returning from a short break in Bangkok....he thinks some of them may have been on the flight!

Lucky for him but maybe bad news for the others, lets hope not eh.

Latest from the Gazette including some names of the injured

Death toll in Phuket plane crash rises

PHUKET (Nation): Some 60 bodies have been retrieved from the wreckage of a One-Two-Go airplane from Bangkok that exploded and broke in two after it slid off the runway and crashed at Phuket International Airport this afternoon.

Some reports put the death toll at about 80, but this has yet to be confirmed. The nationalities of those on board are not yet known.

A surviving passenger said the plane “landed hard” and “bounced” and then skidded off the runway.

Civil aviation official Chiasak Angkauwan said, “The airplane asked to land but due to the weather in Phuket – strong wind and heavy rain – maybe the pilot did not see the runway clearly.

“The plane then fell onto the runway and broke into two,” he said.

“We are rescuing people from the aircraft… we know now there were 123 passengers and five crew.

“We won’t know what really happened until we hear the black box.”

The aircraft, flight number OG 269, was landing about 3:40pm when the it went into a slide and crashed into trees and walls surrounding the airport.

Eye-witnesses said the impact of the crash caused the plane to break in two and they heard a series of explosions.

Rescue teams and navy personnel rushed to the scene.

So far the passengers who have been rushed to hospital are:

1. Likhit Liengpansakul (ICU

2. Parinwit Choosaeng - ICU

3. Chainarong maharae - ICU

4. Apichart Pata

5. Eric Nileland

6. Cristopher Maken

7. Nong Kaonual

8. Ladda Kaonual

9. Pratin Lienchamroon

10. Sarah (surname unknown)

There's a 4-minute report on video on the BBC website now.

BBC - homepage - Home of the BBC on the Internet

Dozens killed in Thai plane crash

One-Two-Go Flight OG 269 was landing from Bangkok
At least 61 people have been killed in a plane crash at the Thai resort of Phuket, officials say.
The plane was carrying 123 passengers - a number of them foreigners - and several crew. It crashed as it was trying to land in stormy weather.

The exact number of casualties is not clear as dozens of people are still missing - but survivors are reported.

Flight OG 269, operated by budget airline One-Two-Go, was landing after a journey from the capital, Bangkok.

Phuket's governor said 61 people had been confirmed dead and another 40 were unaccounted for, after the plane skidded off the runway in strong winds and driving rain on Sunday.

About half the passengers are said to be foreigners.

Rescue operations are under way at the airport and doctors are being flown to Phuket to treat the injured.

Rescuers said the plane caught fire after crashing.

Civil aviation official Chiasak Angkauwan said: "The airplane asked to land but due to the weather in Phuket - strong wind and heavy rain - maybe the pilot did not see the runway clearly.

"The plane then fell onto the runway and broke into two."

One-Two-Go is owned by Orient Thai Airways.

Comment from a passenger on the flight.

Plane Crashes in South Thailand; 60 Dead

Sunday September 16, 2007 2:01 PM

By RUNGRAWEE C. PINYORAT

Associated Press Writer

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - A passenger plane filled with foreign tourists crashed Sunday as it tried to land in heavy rain on the island of Phuket, splitting in two as it was engulfed in flames, officials said. At least 60 people were killed.

The budget One-To-Go Airlines was carrying 123 passengers and five crew members on a domestic flight from the Thai capital of Bangkok to Phuket, one of the country's major tourist destinations, according to the Thai television station TITV.

``I saw passengers engulfed in fire as I stepped over them on way out of the plane,'' Parinwit Chusaeng, a survivor who suffered minor burns, told the Nation television channel. ``I was afraid that the airplane was going to explode so I ran away.''

Phuket's Deputy Governor Worapot Ratthaseema told The Associated Press that at least 60 bodies were laid out in the airport building.

``At least 60 people have been confirmed and 43 have been hospitalized,'' Worapot said, adding the remaining passengers are missing and presumed to be still inside the wreckage.

Fecking very sad.

Regards

My friend and I were on the one two plane that landed 1 before the crash. It was a white knuckle landing in driving heavy rain and strong, gusty winds.
In many years of air travel it was the one time I seriously feared for my life.

The plane that crashed did not catch fire immediately but once it did it was an inferno burning from the inside only followed by a small explosion that ripped a massive hole in the fuselage roof.
The crash itself did not appear to do a lot of damage to the plane. I think it was the flames that were the killer.

Unfortunately I would say not unless they were overcome with smoke inhalation first.

Here is a link to my friends description of events to a CNN reporter....

He is on the audio/video feed too..

'66 dead' in Thai plane crash - CNN.com

All I can say is raise a glass to those Swedish guys who sat in the exit row. Got the doors open and helped save about 35 lives before the fires came.
Those passengers and crew were all on their own out there in those vital seconds.

I have just found a list of people injured on the plane, if you feel it is inapropriate remove it.
Bangkok's Independent Newspaper

It might put a few peoples minds at rest, if you have not had any news.
My thoughts are with all of the families of the people who died in the plane. It could have been anyone of us

Is this just restricted to LCC's tho? I remmeber the worst landing I have ever had was with Thai Airways from Phuket to Bangkok a few months ago.

I used to use LCC's a lot, now however i stick only to the major airlines... Lufthansa etc. However you think how many times a day 1-2-go fly to Phuket, and this is the first accident I can recall. This could have happened on any airline realistically.

Anyway isn't 1-2-go owned and serviced by Thai? I could be wrong, but I am sure they owned 1 LCC.
