Notebook/Laptop Security

I am sure I have asked this before, but I get so lost and drank reading this forum, who knows where this question is, or have I even asked it?

[note to self: I need a holiday.]

All you lot (BM's) chasing free or access to WIFI, are you taking your Notebook/Laptop computer with on your trip?

If so, WTF are you doing with them (unsupervised) during the day whilst you hit the beach, tour or just get pissed and lucky?

They do not fit in the safe, and my PC is not waterproof, scotchproof, rumproof, beerproof etc.

Are you BM's using another device that I should be looking at other than my notebook or expensive fone?

TIA

14 more sleeps....zzzzzzzzzz

If you are worried about losing your PC you could think about getting a high tensile steel cable lock to fit the locking port on your laptop, providing there's an anchor point of some sort in your room. There's a chance that if someone tries to nick it they will drop the LT instead but thats the chance you take. Most people staying in reputable hotels take the chance and the incidence of theft (as far as I am aware, before some peeps start on me) is low. If you have valuable stuff on the machine back up to an external HDD and leave it at home.

Alternatively leave the Laptop at home as there's stacks of cheap internet shops out here.

An amusing ending- only in Thailand. Last Christmas a guy had a laptop lifted from his hotel room on the beach road in a grab/snatch. He left the room door open and an opportunist thief took the chance and grabbed his laptop.Unfortunately ( for the thief!) he forgot the power cable. The guy reported the theft to the police but they just gave their usual indifferent reaction. Later that same day the thief, on discovering he had forgotten the power cable thought to himself 'ahh stupid falang maybe leave door open again'. You guessed it he returned to the hotel and was preparing to gain access to the room when he was caught. The cops turned up and after a bit of 'persuasion' on their part the tea leaf coughed up the location of the laptp and it was recovered. The rueful thief was then transported to the Monkey House.

Insure it..

Plus lock it in a hardcase suitcase and chain that to something solid..

Its the contents usually more of a problem when lost considering replacement costs of basic laptops these days..

I have a cheapy laptop I take with me that has no sensitive data on it, and no passwoeds remembered, I enter email details every time I use then delete them.

If I need to work I take an external HD with me and keep it in the safe.

If the laptop gets stolen, I have lost very little and I carry a Nokia N95 so I can still send/receive emails, browse and get on the forum even if everything goes wrong!!

Cant be too careful!

I found that my 15" old HP laptop did fit in the hotel safe, but that my new Dell 15" does not. The Dell 6400 is thicker. My old HP was one stolen from my car in London so there are thieves everywhere.

I like to take my laptop for music and games and internet and I lock it in my suitcase. I guess if a thief has targetted me and my laptop then he may steal the suitcase anyhow. I don't tend to take the laptop to the swimming pool. The advice on backing up data is very good. I put all my important stuff on a 4 gb flash drive. The 4 gb & 8 gb flash drives are very portable and not expensive. You should back up data not programmes / games etc. The actual amount of really important data (letters, documents etc) is surprisingly small.

Be advised if you go to an internet cafe do not use any websites that require passwords. Passwords can be obtained by hackers in more than one way.
If your laptop is too large for the in room safe, I'm sure the lobby has a larger safe to place your belonings.

The hotels I chose, my laptop fitted in the inroom safe. I also bring a laptop security cable (you can also buy these in Jungceylon for around 600 THB)

The one hotel I did not have a big enough safe I locked in my suitcase.

I have a 12" laptop and it fits easily into the in-room safes, plus its extreamly light to carry around.

As they say size does matter. I have had two 15" laptops now but next time I will go for a smaller one, maybe 12" or 13". The 15" is great for playing games, watching DVD's but it is too big to use in economy class on airplanes (unless the adjacent seat is empty). Plus it may or may not fit in the hotel safe. Trouble is, a good 12" Sony will cost you a lot more than a standard 15". You pay more for less ! Dell has recently brought out a 13.3" laptop (XPS M1330) which is getting good reviews.

I have a A5 sized Libretto U100 laptop, bring it with me all times due to offloading a lot of photos I take on my tours.
I have a locked hardcase suitcase and always put in there when I'm not in the room.

What I really have to do is make the decision of whether I bring the pc with me or not!
The contact at home/business will be handy, although not much point if I'm legless when I am not on the beach.

And I'm arriving smack in the middle of monsoon season, not much beach I'm thinking.

For the occasional use in the hotel-room or in a bar/café, I bring my OQO, small enough to fit inside a pocket in a jacket, or a purse:

Fits in any hotel-safe also!
On the beach I think I can be out of reach for the time being!
But for a longer session browsing the Internet, I use Internet-café's.
To protect my usernames and passwords, I use a U3-enabled memory-stick containing all my usernames and passwords hidden behind one password on the memory-stick.
Using the mouse and copying the names/passwords from the stick to the computer, no logger's can see what I write when logging in on a computer in an Internet-café.
Usually I also clean the computer using a program running from the memory stick before I leave, to remove all my traces and log-history on the rented computer.
Too bad, but you always have to look over your shoulder when using computers in public places!

I nearly bought an OQO+ recently.. He couldnt shift it for 16k.. I would have given him 10 - 12 but I have no need of it, just thought it looked handy for journeys..

You can have a new one of this, the model +01, for 1000.00 USD in the States, approx. 40000 baht, so I think 10-12 000 baht is a bit low for a used one.
The new model, +02 is almost 3 times the price!
The first model, 01, can be had for low price, but is not worth it, can hardly run Windows XP on it!

I don't know, depending how big his pink plastic purse is, if he can get it down there?
I think the correct term I really should have used, is a "fanny pack"?
Personally I find those thin plastic straps nagging my shoulder.
