Sometimes get a little fed up with the topic by the time I have had to explain what I'm am trying to talk about, sometimes forget what the original topic was. But doesn't get me down think for a few reasons.
I had a slovakian gf for 9 years prior to coming to live in Thailand, she was probably one of th emost intelligent people I've ever met, but lack of fluent language skills made it hard to discuss these subjects and later on when she was fluent we found she had no interest in world news etc. So I sort of got used to discussing, debating these topics elsewhere so find it kind of normal now not to chat with Gee about all and sundry. Second aspect is what is intelligent conversation for some is not interesting etc for others. As said Slovak gf was super intelligent and would discuss and debate on certain topics all fecking day, current tgf is not as wordly wise nor as well educated but we discuss and debate things in her field of knowledge, so perhaps the same end result?? Perhaps this is ultimately your answer, you find topics she can have opinion on to discuss and leave world events or in otherwords things she may not be interested in, to talk to others about. And Lil thanks for the Sid Arthur referance, I could never remember that guys name and now will probably never forget it!!!

Sid is considered the 'lord Buddha'.. The price who attained enlightnement went and sat under a tree etc..
But yes I understand that the term Buddha can mean many people but in Thailand, in Thai terevada Buddhism, Buddha (lord Buddha) = Sid Arthur.. Thai Buddhism is a odd mix remember.. I am not saying your not right.. But in Thai terms they may have a different interpretation of Buddha than is strictly correct.. Also most I have spoken to know he came from at least 'long long way' and didnt think he was Thai.

Some of the bgs I speak with that do show signs of intelligence, speak English well, seem like they could advance themselves somehow. Choose not to, they do have enough cash to go to some form of schooling. They would just rather wait till tey find a man, turn 40 or whatever.

Things like the war in Iraq, september 11th, concepts of working and money and that we dont just go to ATM s and money just falls out lol!!!!,
The War in Iraq and 9/11 doesn't really affect them as much as it does the UK, USA etc... they are not at war. In terms of money falling out of ATM's, I don't see that as any different than foreigners coming to Patong etc... and thinking thats what Thailand is all about. You see loads of girls looking for money, they see loads of guys shelling out money, its not exactly a normal thing in everyday life. The girls are probably of equivelant intelligence on average to supermarket checkout girls or factory workers back in the west.
