the luk krung issue interests me too, in terms of will they if allowed become a strong factor in thai society, not just on tv/models, but in the professions and more traditional thai structure.
imho, if your father is a boozing, semi literate farang, and he has some money, he could by virtue of that increase the childs education opportunities, better schools, diet, exposure to a different life view than your average issan farmer.
a child with a farang father with a decent education, money, and an active interest in the childs education then surely that childs options are increased.
the nuturing aspect to me is the key, a child allowed freedom and the backing of parents with a vision to its future, will have more chance to reach their potential, than the child with parents of similar financial means but lacking the education/vision to fully develop their child.
we all know people that have come from the worst of upbringings and achieved some real positives career wise, some drag themselves up, but most have the input of positive role models upon them, eg teachers who can see potential in the child, a career path that allows development in a disciplined environment eg military.
farang/thai relationships do change the social landscape in thailand but will their offsprings chances be increased within a fairly traditional and closed sector of the thai society?.

i say this often, and really believe it. my gf is one of the smartest people i have ever met. her ability to learn and retain information astounds me.
but to be honest. i worked at her. i think i have had conversations with her that most on this board would find silly. some of the things about the world that i have taken the time out and explained to her and i have seen a change where she knows and understands what happens in the world, and even better, wants to know
i dont think many people are patient enough and like LIL sais, look for other places to have those conversations without really taking the time to have it with their wifes or gf's

paul, i think its if your vision to have an equal partner, not just a compliant thai partner/servant, you will put in the effort to increase her level of comprehension of bigger things, than the price of fruit at the market, and she of course wants to learn due to her naieve but latent intelligence.
on personal experience, the atlas is never now faraway, due to the wifes exposure to people from various backgrounds she is now exposed to.
my brief rundown of the politics behind these peoples immigration usually has to follow.
one of her best friends at school is tibetan, she sits with the thais, koreans, japanese and africans, she virtually ignores the chinese people.
my wife asked me about this, because the chinese speakers speak to her tibetan friend in chinese, but my wife sensed her reluctance to have any real conversations with them.
her questions about this relationship, resulted in a "my view on tibet", now the wife understands and is fully supportive of her tibetan friends view.

but is that traditional and closed sector of thai society really that prevalent in certain businesses?
i can see it in many, but i think professions like medical and someother fields, you might not have that nepotism or class structure. anywhere in the world you will always have people with in's and influences, but i see this thai closed society being more military, cops, and maybe land ownership type of businesses
again, this is all guessing

agree with you again, it is just our perception, at this stage, i hope some of the more experienced could answer these thoughts, those who have luk krung entering or who have entered the professions etc.

The only advantage an LK child has over a regular child is “Opportunity”.
That is usually only related to schooling and business networks.
They will get better schooling (primary, secondary, college, university) usually due to the falang parents’ financial capacity and this gives them a greater opportunity to excel.
Also, most falang parents’ are expatriates and they move in the top tier business circles and this is another significant opportunity for their LK child.
My LK son (we think son) will be born mid November this year. His mum is Lao and I am Australian. Pui is a regular Lao woman with high intelligence (speaks, reads and writes 3 languages). I am an expat (supposedly with a reasonable intelligence, but that comes into question on a regular basis).
The top tier business circles and echelon in Vientiane (and some significant Bangkok ones) are already talking about our son and his future (and he is not even fcuking born yet).
Bottom Line: I strongly believe my LK son will be able to pursue whatever career he wishes wherever he wants.
Pui and I both know that all things considered equal our child will be very fortunate and successful in the Lao community. He will have grass-roots Lao values and culture etc but he will have the added advantage of superior schooling and education and later in life the business networks.
That may extend to Thailand but I am not 100% sure on that just yet?
And in all reality his best mates father may be a rice farmer…who knows…who cares eh!
His mum will keep him “Lao focused” for sure…

Great answer and i can only second that.Intelligence and knowledge are just two different things. To understand that most of the BG´s didn´t had access to a good school and education doesnt make them look stupid in my eyes. I am well educated and i was lucky to be born in a western country with access to education and parents who pushed me to learn (as i am lazy)!
From the experience of my life, i ´ve met a lot of so called "well educated people" who are as stupid as a buffalo and a lot of smart and itelligent BG´s or prostitutes as well!
As i said before intelligence has nothing to do with education, but education doesnt mean to be intelligent either!!
To the OP, in germany we have a saying, translated literally: arrogance and proud are coming from the same kind of wood! My appologies to every native english speaker for that translation

Probably this is the most deep thinking thread I ever read on this forum.
And I hope to be somewhat helpful here.
First of all, a person s IQ can be increased or decreased. I mean that this kind of thing we use to call IQ is not a static factor.
Language with all his structure ( grammar, puntuaction, ect..) plays an important role at constructing an individual s ability to think and express himself.
Thus for thais the fact of not having punctuation result to an handicap to really grasp the concept of a written issue.
Abstract concepts are not well grasped by thais because they used to associate the invention of new words with something material or tangible or observable. ( see how concepts like: responsability, logic, efficiency,... are translated in passa thai). That also explains why thai are not very well endowed in mathematics.
There is more to be said about this subject but right now I'm too drunk to continue

Ice box seems typical of a lot of "university" graduates, full of their own importance and wouldn't know their as**hole freom their elbow. They learn a lot, sometimes a never ending degree but they know jack sh*t about what happens in the real world. I remember working at a place where I must have been the only non university graduate. Several of them were talking one day and said to me "What degree do you have" I said a BE luv. They looked confused and looked at each other in a baffled manner and one of them said, "I've never heard of that." I said it's a Bachelor of Experience from the school of hard knocks. Better than you will ever learn at university. Most of them were just doing degrees to fill in time in their boring lives.

Exactly
How is that if you walk into a room with many so-called intelligent people they won't have one original thought among them?

I can understand what the OP is trying to say.
But let's not forget that most girls in the bars are in their early 20's. Compare it to people of that age in your own country. They can be pretty ignorant too, and they are all supposed to have had proper (western) education.
Ending up in the barscene isn't the road to a proper worldview either.
Ok maybe they can not point out every country on a worldmap, but I can not say i encounterd real dumb girls either.
And yes, sometimes it sucks if you really like a girl but you get kinda stuck because of the language barrier.
And yes it can be annoying that their stereotype idea about "rich" falangs can't be talked out of their head, but their sanook view on life is something we can learn a lot of too.
