Beware if you eat "salmon"
Poison puffer fish sold as salmon kills 15
Uunscrupulous vendors in Thailand have been selling the flesh of the deadly puffer fish disguised as salmon, causing the deaths of more than 15 people over the past three years, a doctor said today.
Although banned since 2002, puffer fish continue to be sold in large quantities at local markets and restaurants, said Narin Hiransuthikul of Bangkok's Chulalonkorn University Hospital.
"Some sellers dye the meat of puffer fish and make it look like salmon, which is very dangerous,'' Dr Narin said.
Dr Narin said that over the past three years, more than 15 people have died and about 115 were hospitalised from eating the fish.
The ovaries, liver and intestines of the puffer fish contain tetrodotoxin, a poison that can produce rapid and violent death.
The fish is called fugu in Japan, where it is consumed by thrill-seeking Japanese gourmets for whom the risk of poisoning adds piquancy.
Every year, there are reports of people dying or falling sick in Asia from eating puffer fish.
Eating the fish can cause paralysis, vomiting, heart failure and death.
Saw one of these beached on Nui Beach a few weeks ago and some Thais were helping it back into the sea!

I read that story. Scary to think anyone would do that and endanger another human life.
And that is a scary looking fish too!

How do you mean Ototto?
I read the story in a UK newspaper last week sometime. I think the people responsible for trying to sell pufferfish as salmon is dreadful. Putting other peoples lives at risk for their own financial gain is tantamount to murder in my book.
And finally, yes that fish is a scary looking bu**er.

I'd be watching out if you are offered salmon after an argument with the TGF.

I can remember many years back, going fishing with a buddy in Michigan. We caught some sort of fish(looked like a fish, not like a puffer), and I wanted to fry them up, since it was all we caught, and he said, OK, we can, but let me gut them and clean them, because if the organs are punctured and contaminate the fishmeat, then there is poison in there, and we could get very sick, or possibly die. I watched him, and he was extremely careful cleaning the fish. Then we ate it and it was very nice. Can't remember the name of the fish, though.
So I think if a person knows what they are doing, then maybe it is OK for them to eat the puffer fish.

Tetrodotoxin is a powerful neurotoxin that can cause death in nearly 60% of the humans that ingest it. A human only has to ingest a few milligrams of the toxin for a fatal reaction to occur. Once consumed, the toxin blocks the sodium channels in the nervous tissues, ultimately paralyzing the muscle tissue.

But obviously, not 60% of the people who eat it die. Nor do very many Japanese gourmets. It is only the fish that were not prepared carefully that are killing people.

Here we go again!! That'll teach them for eating anything that flys; swims or crawls.
Puffer fish alert after food poisoning outbreak in Rayong
RAYONG: -- Three villagers were taken to hospital with serious food poisoning Tuesday after eating papaya salad mixed with fermented puffer fish.
Local public health officials searched for the source of the toxic food, fearing more people could fall ill.
The three patients - suffering nausea, diarrhoea, weak muscles, and numb fingers - were admitted to Ban Khai Hospital after eating papaya salad (somtum) mixed with fermented puffer fish two days ago.
As the patients were recovฌering in hospital, Rayong public health expert Dr Krit Palasuth told a meeting at Ban Khai Hospital the freshwater fermented puffer fish had been ground up, which spread toxins all over the papaya salad. This caused the villagers to suffer tretodotoxin poisoning.

I know its an ugly looking bugger.
I had Fugu in japan last year at a pretty flash restaurant, anf they served first cut up fine as sushimi (raw) which was ok, but not as tasty as tuna (especially the belly section called Toro) or some other fish.
Then they served it up in a caserole dish on a hotplate (gas on the table) with the fish still living on its nerves. It had been disected and sliced and the dangerous portions thrown away - evidently as i am still here to tell the tail- but it had been removed from the tank, ans cut up immediatley. The fins and bits were still pulsating.
Not a bad feed, but I think its a culturally acquired taste, as there are definately tastier japanese meals out there.
