Spearfishing

Hi guys,

I am spending July in Phuket and want to do loads of diving and some spearfishing (freediving only) to feed my barbie.

Does anyone know of a good charter company for spearfishing? Any good locations? Any tips for equipment?

Thanks in advance,

Nic

Most companys will tell you to get lost regarding spear fishing. There is a real conservation drive in Phuket and such activities are not particularly welcome.

Most of the main reef areas in the area (though not so much on the island itself) are considered protected areas and there fore it's illegal. You may be both disappoineted and disapproved of.

I went shopping for deals on my first PADI on Phuket, but I never saw a charter for spearfishing.

If you want to catch fish, why don`t you go for the deep-sea fishing instead?
Personally I`d rather follow SafeAs` advice!

Thanks for the tips guys - particularly SafeAs

Without wanting to get badly flamed - I think spearfishing is as enviromentally friendly as is humanly possible. That is if you are resonable and use fair means and only persue your dinner....

This is what if found as to legality

Also there is one shop

Anyways - I enjoy fishing but not enough to ruin my holiday.

Thanks,

Nic

P.s. if I see any of you there you get a free beer!

As a scuba driver spearfishing really erks me. "Use fair means", I dont think that these words can be used in terms of spearfishing.

Each to their own, enjoy your stay.

Steve, I am a scuba diver too and have been off and on for more than 10 years.

By "fair means", I mean that I would only ever consider fishing while I was free diving (no tanks). By unfair means I was thinking of commercial divers who will hunt with tanks and at night when the fish are sleeping - which I think is contemptable for recreation or business.

I dive now in South Korea where spearfishing is the norm amongst scuba divers and frankly watching them coming in irks me too as they will land fish they have no intention of eating.

I am not a vegitarian and to me there seems something right and proper about putting your own dinner on the table. I have been looking forward to a Thai green fish curry that I caught for the 6 months I have been planning this trip.

Having said all this, mainly I want to party in Phuket - and having seen the website for your bar I don't want to fall out with you

Dive safe,

Nic

I know nothing on spear fishing or diving in general but it may be worth visiting Laem sing beach , once there i know a guy who works at one of the restaurants , (follow the steps down , when you get to the bottom there are some really steep steps with ropes as rails) go down those and the restaurant is directly to the right , the thai guys is like a thai Bob marley with rasta dreads , i know he does a lot of that free diving as he reguarly catches lobster and tiger prawns bt hand in the mornings so he may know something or be able to advise you ..ps he speaks pretty good english too

Harpooner in paradise...

Well my brothers, you were all right. Visiblility off the beach is running at about 30 cms.

The long boat guys are into taking me spearfishing - but they cannot reach clear water in their boats...

Ah well, I am finding plenty to keep myself occupied - this really is a fantastic place!

Tip... Harry's beach hotel has a very friendly staff, cool attitude to parties with no charge for visitors (actually, they just wink at you in the morning), 1 minute from the beach and 3 minutes from Bangla road...

Ah well, back to the beach to nurse my hangover

Nic
