7 Eleven madness
Yet ANOTHER one just opened in Nanai road.
Already there are 2 within 100 metres of each other and a 711 next to a Family Mart.
Won't be surprised if a 711 opens next to a 711 in the future!!

I like going into them to cool off during the afternoon. Take about 5 minutes to buy a bottle of water. The aircon in 7 Elevens are set to NORWAY IN JANUARY temperatures.

What's the competitor called again? Family Mart? Is that Thai-owned?

Seven Eleven and Family Mart expanding like crazy, Sai nam yen alone has a lot of them. I do appreciate the Seven Eleven shop 100m from my house thought. I wonder if they make any money with all those shops.

Don't know but it's holding company is Japanese.
7-Eleven is a subsidiary of Seven & I Holdings Co. of Japan.
The franchise in Thailand is the Charoen Pokphand Group, which in turn grants franchises to operators. There are 4,055 7-Elevens in Thailand, of which more than 1,500 are in Bangkok, making Thailand have the 4th largest number of stores after the US, Japan and Taiwan.

Correct 7AM-11PM. The idea was to be open when most people don't sleep.

Never thought of that, as they are open 24/7 most everywhere, so they would have called it 24-7, na?
I figured it was a marketing ploy, i.e., 7 and 11 are the winning numbers when you take your first throw in a craps game, so it makes them sound like a winner! Positive spin/subconscious association. And, of course, it rhymes, so it is very catchy and easy to remember, sticks in your head.

Anyone having been to Japan will know how big the business is for convenience stores. 7/11, family mart, circle K, Lawson to name a few, every road every avenue you'll be sure to find a conveni....

Seeing the title of this thread I was hoping it was going to be about the madness that use to happen in front of the old 7-11 across from Shark Club when the bars let out. Some serious people watching could be had there. Them were the days.

Not sure exactly how the 7/11 franchise is operated but I can only assume that its the same as the convenience store sector in Ireland. In Ireland they are not run like a conventional franchise where you normally pay a % off the top because they are really wholesalers and not retailers. Lets say they are wholesalers with a retail concept because they make all their money by supplying all the retail stores throughout the country. The margins are simply too tight to pay a % of turnover as a franchise fee but most stores do have a very high turnover. In fact the nett profit margin can be as low as 1% or 2% in alot of stores.
This imo makes for a very risky type of franchise for the franchisee because its in the best interest of the 'Wholesaler' (Franchisor) to have as many stores as possible throughout the country. It doesn't really matter to them if the retailer is making money or not because they are still making money on the supply of goods and increasing their own turnover on every new store that opens. With a conventional franchise, you would normally be able to renegotiate your franchise fee etc to help make it profitable but there is no cushion in this franchise model.
So opening up 2 7/11's beside one another is all about maintaining and increasing market share because sure as daylight if its not them it will be Family Mart or some other competitor. But you can bet your bottom dollar that the retailer (franchisee) in this case will be less well off as a result of the new store opening.
Finally there is one exception where sometimes the franchisee will have dozens of stores. These stores might only be breaking even, however he will get a kickback LTA (Long term aggreement) at the end of the year based on volume of sales which can be in the region of several hundred thousand Euro and that is basically his profit.
Just my 2 cents from a retailers perspective!

Four of the buggers now in Kamalalalala, Fourth one opened almost opposite the last one, saves crossing the road I suppose but same old, same old.
The Visa run driver still went to the wrong fcuking one when I wanted picking up! How many falangs in Kamalalala at 0545 outside a 7-11 waving at coaches? Well, usually me after a few too many but..............I was sober!
Can happily report that the new shop being built next to K&M supermarket (Which is better than the 7-11's) is going to be a Honda retailer.
