Dangerous Patong Hill

Quote from the Chief of Traffic Police at Tung Tong police Station>>>

“The Phuket Provincial Highways Office is not resurfacing the road on the Kathu side of the hill because that section of the road falls under the responsibility of Kathu Municipality. They have no authority to freely resurface that section of the road.

Finally, just a little advice, the trick to driving over the hill safely after fresh rain is to drive slowly and keep left because the road will be slippery.”

LOL - yes, we know it's damn slippery and we are supposed to drive on the left. Seems crazy that the Patong side of the hill has just been resurfaced when it's the Kathu side that is the most dangerous especially near the bottom where it is the steepest and there are all those chunks of cement and debris to the inside line that force people to drive up in the middle of the road.

Then about halfway up just after a right-hand bend there's that enormous bump in the road (like there's a tree root or something like it trying to push through) that I have witnessed seeing a girl on a motorbike hit and cause her to go into the crash barrier.

So remember, if you have an accident on the way over on the Kathu side caused by the condition of the road it's the Kathu Municipality at fault...and the Patong Municipality if you've managed to pass the Chinese shrine and start the descent the other side on the nice new surface.

just the sort of comment you would expect from them, I wonder what his comment would be regarding all the storm water drains on the patong side , with the resurfacing been done they are now 3-4inches below road level and have been for 4 weeks now. This is extremely dangerous in a town where the majority of the locals get around on a small motercycle

Good point Wazza, I was trying to explain the danger of this to my gf, might as well be talking about nuclear physics, she just could not or would not try to understand or see any danger at all.

The road to Kamala is hilly but no where as much so as Patong Hill, it is one of the reasons I decided not to get a home there. I've had only a few near misses travelling it but you can just see the danger everytime you do use it!!

I remember when I lived in Kathu 2 years ago there was one afternoon I came over the hill into Patong after a heavy downpour and there were 3 seperate accidents on the hill including a truck on the Patong side that had gone off the road and was in the deep gully on the left side.

As for the storm drains, sometimes you hit one on a bike and wonder if you're going to come out the other side in one piece. Took a hit one time which made everything in the front basket come flying out and also the key came out the ignition and went into the drain

It is pretty dangerous right now, especially coming back down into Patong. Those fcukin' huge bits they have dug out are not marked in anyway at all and I would like to say thank you to the twonk who could see I was indicating to pull right to avoid one of these holes but wouldn't let me out. I did manage to break in time, come to a complete stop and get around it.

He had sped off and I lost him in Patong after a few sweeps around the one-way circuit. I still have his number plate and can't wait to see his car before I give it a new 'textured' feel to the bodywork.
