depends on the attitude of MIB at the time.....anything from Dennis' suggestion above to locked in the clink and deported.....usually midle ground can be found with presentation of tea money....but offer it straight away or it may be too late back at the station

They'd probably advise you that your engine wont last as long compared to using gasoline.... but give you a pat on the back for being innovative !!!!

I wouldn't bother with renting one. Me and socal did and found the traffic to be too hectic, and that we were juice most of the time not to mention how cheap cabs are and how fun it is to roam around on foot anyhow. I guess for out of town forays it would be nice but in the city, **** it.

Being caught riding one drunk shouldn't be your main concern...
I can tell you what happens when you come off a scooter with alcohol. You get busted up, maybe quite badly, maybe killed, probably have to go to the Emergency room/Hospital, loose a few days from your holiday (Bargirls will find you less attractive if your covered in Bandages, Cuts, Gashes and grazes), Money that will have to be paid, etc...
Just my experience...
Have a safe trip...

My personal experience is that it is very rare to have your level checked here unless you are involved in an incident. Even if it’s clear and obvious that you are incapacitated. However, if something happens (e.g. an accident where Thais are involved), you’d better be prepared to pay up and even “do some time”.
That said, a friend was involved in an accident on Samui and still had to pay up (200,000 BHT +) even if he was proven sober and not at fault. Driving here is risky regardless of the alcohol involved. (Oh, the other day I played pool with two of “Phuket finest” and after we all had downed a few beers, they still had no problems seeing me drive off on my scooter…)
To Tarzan: If you do not do it at home, then why do it in another country? Good question. Back home I would not risk it mainly because I would lose my license --- and pay a heavy fine --- if stopped. However, I have somehow lost these restrictions after living here. Stupid? Yup indeed. But the lackluster and arbitrary way of applying the rules here seem to also affect by (better) judgement. Part of the human psyche I guess.
My advice would still be to stay away from driving any motorized vehicles if you’re on holiday here. Drunk or not. But I still love my scooter (and beer) …

Its not often but I had a friend who got caught and it was not an accident involved either. He told me it was his worst experience ever in Thailand and after that he was just drinking water in the bars. He had a night in Phuket Town and was caught on the way back to Patong, went to jail with 30 other inmates waiting for the court in a small room. He know some high profiles here and got out quicker than most but still a very bad experience.
I dont remember the fee's involved now but its a third strike system if I remember right, so if happens next time it will be even worse. And a third time may mean go to prison. I posted about this maybe 2 years ago.
I never heard anyone getting caught for this in Patong thought, and if the police did, they could easily lock up 30% of the drivers here any night and time.

Man, that would seriously shake (wake?) me up too. But point is still that there’s a 99% chance of not getting stopped unless you’re involved in an incident. (But yes, the chance of getting involved here is certainly way greater than back home.)
Did not know about the “third strike” system also included farangs though.

Taxis being so cheap, I just don't get why someone would risk it.

it is stupid and dangerous and if you aren't used to the roads here its even worse
HOWEVER i cannot stop myself as for me personally i am more likely to get into an argument with a tuk tuk driver over the fare when drunk and who knows where that one will end up

I ride a 800cc motorbike as my everyday transport here in Melbourne. I reckon my riding skills are pretty good but I choose not to risk life and limb when I'm on holidays in Patong.
I hired scooters on my earlier trips to Phuket, but I found the traffic conditions were too treacherous, so I don't do it any more. I'd rather not be one of the "walking wounded" (or worse) on my holiday.

Been riding a bike for 25 years as transport. Dont even know how to drive. I have no problem riding around Patong, but going out into those hills you have death wish drunk or sober if your'e not a local.

Yeah - I've been riding bikes for 30 years, but I had some close shaves around Patong. It's far more dangerous than peak hour in Melbourne.
So many of the farangs riding around Patong on scooters are inexperienced motorcyclists - or outright newbs. YIKES!

Know of a case a couple of years ago where a foriegner was arrested in a random breath test in patong between xmas and new year and was charged, convicted and locked up in the immigration centre until deportation. Ended up spending new year in a cell with illegal burmese workers until immigration personel could be organised to take him to the border, by all accounted a very unpleasant experience.
