I agree with this.
Keep in mind that if you rent from a US corporation you are protected under US law. So if you trust, say Avis, in the US you can trust them equally in Thailand ... so long as the transaction involves the US entity; this will include making the reservation on the corporate web site.
The companies listed by Rodger generally includes full comprehensive and collision insurance as they require that for rental. On a previous trip I checked on local rentals which were a lot cheaper, however, by the time I added insurance I was within 10-15% of the major agencies.
