Decent wine in Patong?

Is there any shop that sells decent imported wine in Patong? Being a big fan of that particular beverage, it has always been difficult to get hold of good wine while in LOS.

Sure, you can always get that overpriced bottle of Barolo or Barbaresco at the Italian restaurant around the corner, but that's usually even more expensive than at home.

It would be nice to be able to keep a couple of white Burgundy bottles in my hotel fridge on this November tour of duty...

As all red wine connosoirs will know, its best kept in the fridge, served chilled and drunk out of plastic cups, slips down a treat especially after the 13 or 14th one.

They have now also sponsored a very fetching line of bikini briefs, I have availed myself of a three pack in 'xl' of course. 3 bikini briefs in assorted sizes, lasticated tops, a range of five colours, so long as you like shades of blue at a marked down price of 100bhts, JC sportsworld sale bins.

You can find a fairly decent selection in Juncelyon. There is a shop across from the grocery store that they have in one of the buildings. However, the Merlot selection is very limited, which is what I was looking for when I went there.

It is really crap these days to bring some with due to the liquid restrictions, unless you take the chance and put it in your check-in luggage.

Import tax on wine in Thailand is 200%. So don't hope on cheap "class" wine.

I buy wine smuggled from laos

Great prices, but still way over what it would cost in Aus for example

Penfold BIN 407 in Supermarket 3000THB, I pay 1300THB.

Going slightly off the subject, we tried a thai whine (pun intended) at Vinopolis this year which was grown on some floating vines, it was horrendous. I guess you should get some decent Aussie wines in LOS, as they should travel better than the european decadence. Be interested in the outcome of this thread, as I do enjoy a tipple now and again.

maybe we could get Nicke to have a supply at the bar, and a sophisitcats table for the more decerning drinker.

I do not profess to be a wine connosoir but there appears to me to be no good quality wine in Thailand, agree that I thought that at least aussie wine should travel as least distance etc but its crap here, like all other wine with the only exception of Rosso, (wine of champions) but there again this is an acquired taste and not for the discerning pallette.

My only conclusion can be that the humidity, the travel, the wine just does not taste anywhere as good as back in the UK or France.

Now to not purposefully stir things up but to just pass opinion, French Wine stands head and shoulders above its competition and sadly UK, Aussie and Californian wine pales into a very distant second place. You cannot expect it to travel to the US or Australia so you need to drink it at source to compare, then you are comparing with what you think or are told is good, but when I read a good Aussie sauvignon blanc is this or that, a US merlot is great, feck the only grape that can grow to anything similar to its home of France is the Chardonney grape and then well!!! grow that in a flower pot.

Send a message via Skype™ to Denver
Free underpants with every flagon of Rosso this month only.

We've put the price of a flagon up to 800 Baht to take in the cost of the underpants.

All underpants are washed after straining our Rosso grapes through them and packaged in clingfilm for freshness.

Get some while stocks last!

I have always thought that a wine bar, that has a good selection of wines, and, in which wine tasting is often organized could draw in a good deal of ppl. in Patong

Wouldn't an international wine festival, with BG's representing different countries, and different grapes, from the slim, light, sauvignour blanc, to the large dark rounded barola grape, although, you may have a problem represent the fresh virginal voignay.

Nicke can you organise the 2008 first annual wine tasting festival, I'm sure it would go down a treat.

Maybe someday "WalMart" will open branch centers in LOS. They have (fine wines), and could give Carrefour a good bit of competition.

Quote:
WalMart announced that, sometime in 2007, it will begin offering customers a
new discount item ---- WalMart's own brand of wine.

The world's largest retail chain is teaming up with Ernest & Julio Gallo
Winery of California to produce the spirits at an affordable price, in the
$2.00 - $5.00 range.

Wine connoisseurs may not be inclined to put a bottle of WalMart brand into
their shopping carts, but "there is a market for inexpensive wine," said Kathy
Micken professor of marketing at University of Arkansas, Bentonville. "But the
right name is important."

Customer surveys were conducted to determine the most attractive name for the
WalMart wine brand. The top surveyed names in order of popularity were:

10. Chateau Traileur Parc

9. White Trashfindel

8. Big Red Gulp

7. World Championship Riesling

6. NASCARbernet

5. Chef Boyardeaux

4. Peanut Noir

3. I Can't Believe it's not Vinegar

2. Grape Expectations

1. Nasti Spumante

The beauty of WalMart wine is that it can be served with either white meat
(Possum) or red meat (Squirrel).

Theres a wine shop in Tesco lotus out near the home pro / Sony center side.. Pretty bad sticker shock but very often 2 for 1 pricing so makes it bearable. Plus they have the room climate controlled and I have yet to have a sour bottle from them.

Deli has lots of cheap wine / plonk but they have so many wines that have soured (is it purely climate ??) that i am put off buying anything over 1000 baht there as its hit or miss on if it will be vinegar or not.

I used to miss good wines a lot, my pallete must have gone to hell or i havent had a superb one in so long that I can drink the plonk without hating it like I did when i first arrived.

Well, that's handy....... you should fit right in with the ROSSO (drink of champions) crowd up in Kamalalala!!!!
On a more serious note.... I discovered, a couple of years ago, the they have got a wine club/ tasting thingy happening at the TATUM Mansions hotel on Soi Kepsap.
Just thought it may be of interest!!??

Selling times?? Is that for real?

I only ever bought the odd replacement beer for the mini bar at the hotel so went to the convenience store that is inbetween the beach rd and the Patong Resort and it was always available......except when we came accross an election day. No wonder it was so bloody easy to book into Sams Steakhouse that night. They even gave me the full wine list and let me look at it for a few minutes. I ordered what i wanted and then was told I could only order non alcoholic drinks.......but I digress.

What are the booze selling times at the supermarket?

Cheers.
