I have noticed that many people giving an opinion here have not been too complementary about the US.
Why is this? Does everyone really think they are all as bad as they are made out to be?
One thing I would say, look to your own countrymen before knocking other countries. We aren't all perfect. Every American BM I have met in LOS have been sound guys to chat and drink with. Some of the comments in previous posts have been a bit too derogatory IMO.

I wondered how far we'd get into the thread before these kind of retorts. Did well to make it this far I think.

Not surprising, given some of the comments attributed to the USA !

I don't think it's that bad Dawsey, apart from the "big fat and rude" comment it doesn't seem really off-base. The obesity comments seem to be a trend but then that's based on fact and not opinion. With the foreign policy/political comments well of course that's what the oustide world are exposed to so that was always going to be in the mix. I don't think there's much of a negative attitude towards the nature of the american people themselves any more than the drugs/alcohol comments attributed to other countries could be taken in the same light.

I have met very nice Americans and also some rude ones. Like you said, look at your own country before saying something like "big fat and rude", that's not nice.
One American tourist i as drinking with a couple of weeks ago explained to me his thoughts of why there are 2 kinds of Americans, one that travels and knows the world and respect it, and another that thinks America is the only country in the world.

To all of you with the negative comments made towards the USA:
I am generally an easy going person, but this gets under my skin. Where are you meeting these fat, rude Americans that you are referring to? Yes, I have met some rude Americans, but I have also met rude Thai, British, German, Italian, and French people. I just don’t think Americans are any more or any less rude than those from other countries.
Also, when it comes to the foreign policy comments that were made, maybe you could actually pick up a history book and read it. Why do you think the United States is the "melting pot"? Within some of the world's best universities, I have seen people from nearly every country coming here of all places to receive a better education. I must reiterate that we do have our fair share of uneducated and lazy people, but probably much less than any other country would have. I believe that our work ethic speaks for itself.
I have met a few BM's at Mai Thai and have always had a great time. I'm very confident that neither of them would say I was either rude or fat. I treat everyone I meet with great respect until they have given me a reason not to do so any further. It just seems very shallow and closed-minded to generalize the way that you have. Knowledge is power, so please educate yourselves and truly open your minds!!!

Do not get too upset about all this, as this thread was always going to go this way. I read a few peoples comments regarding my own country and felt a little bit annoyed but then thought, okay out of so many people posting their perceptions of my country of course some will not be complementary and that I should just accept some people are bound to have a negative perception.
Not everyone in the world think your country is brilliant, from wherever we all come from, just live with it, nothing to get to bent of shape about.

Calm down paulf1, i know you are angry. Sticks and stones will break your bones but words wont hurt you.
It's just how most think after 9/11 and the way the Government is handling the situation.
Cheers.

im sure people figured i would jump in and get all defensive
you know why i am not?
i read so many wrong perceptions about Canada, that werent negative, just not right, that following up with negative comments about the States just tells me people just assume things and half the times dont know what they are talking about
some of the negative comments are just, but some are way off. the ones that are way off are usually ones from people that dont know what they are talking about anyways

The replies are all perceptions. They may very well be factually incorrect, but they are how outsiders perceive that country's people, leaders, political landscape to be.
For some people, those perceptions might be grounded in expansive experience travelling the globe and meeting people from different walks of life, but for others those perceptions might come from watching CNN or a Steve Irwin Croc Hunter documentary.
PS: I knew this thread was going to end in

I will be in Phuket in Feb, end of Feb, if youre still there, we can drink.
I am local KL, i have friends fr Penang and i say bad things bout Penang, they will scold me and say bad things, i will just back off and say it's my opinion, just like theirs on KL. A beer will settle everything. 5555555

Oh dearie me.... some people take things far too seriously on here
Really though, threatening behaviour isn't really becoming in LOS and doesn't come recommended !
p.s Just for the record i went to a wedding in Wexford and met some fantastic people who drank for 24 hours, hence my comment....maybe not a term of endearment but not necessarily an insult either....

It is amazing how people stereotype the people of US when there is probably not a country on earth with as diversified population as them?
It is at best called ignorance......
