Has anybody been to Koh Tao or Khao Lak? I might be coming to Phuket soon with a group of friends, and we heard about Koh Tao and Khao Lakand wondered if it is worth visting? Anybody ever been there? How is the nightlife there?

koh Tao is off samui and a long way from Phuket...great little place for scuba diving if that's what you are after

Kao Lak is on Phuket but right up in the north....abiut half a day from patong by bus....it is where the liveaboard boats leave from for diving the Similan + Surin Islands + the Burma Banks

if you are not a scuba diver don't consider these places

Been to Koh Tao two years ago. Enjoyed it very much. More then enough night life. But don't expect it to be Patong. You can find all types of accomodations from 100 baht to whatever you want to spend. A motorbike is nice to have. Many beaches to see. I would recommend one with gears. Getting to some of the beaches the so called "roads" steep and rutty. Nice to have a low gear to get up and down. The one downfall I saw was lots of litter everywhere. Its sad to see on such a small beautiful island.

I will go back again....

Khao Lak is not on Phuket is it??

Khao Lak is not in Phuket. It's 80kms north and is the resort area where 2000+ farangs died in the tsunami. It's about 1 hours drive once you've gone over the Sarasin bridge.

There's a lot of misleading advertising and listings done by hotels in Khao Lak. I've seen directories for supposedly hotels in Phuket which are actually in Khao Lak and they say (nearby Phuket). If you call 80kms nearby...then I'm a Dutchman!!!

There is very little nightlife there. It's mainly large resort complexes and attracts families; couples...and divers.
