Done Songkran in BKK, Koh Samui, PP Island and Patong and loved it everytime. Great if you are in a group who are up for it particularly if a few are first timers. Always love giving the MIB a good soaking. One day is enough for me now but wouldn't miss it. Here's a few photos from previous years.

Nice pictures! What type of camera did you use or what type of covering if it was not a waterproof camera? Was recomended to me before in another thread to buy the waterproof disposable type which I will, but wanted to hear about other options. I see the waterproof hard case for my digital camera goes for about $175-$200 so I might not go that route. I try to take as many pictures as I can while I am there to try and get my by to my next trip.

if you don't want to go diving with your camera, you could try one of those "plastic-bags" sold as waterproof housing

i'm not sure about the price, but i guess it can't be very expensive!

I used a Sony Cyber Shot with underwater housing rated to 30 metres which is an expensive way to go just for Songkran if you don't do underwater photography. I have used the disposable waterproof cameras with fair results.

I took a professional photographer diving who put a top of the range Canon digital camera in one of those plastic bags. I thought he was crazy doing this with such an expensive bit of kit but hey it worked he got some great shots and the camera lived to tell the tale.

these bags are not bad at all, but i wouldn't use them for diving

i have the (relative expensive) plastic housing for my canon compact cam...

Have to agree I put my Olympus c5050wz in an Ikelite housing which costs more than the camera wouldn't consider using the bag for diving but for songkran they should be just fine.

2008 will be my third Songkran. There will be 6 of us coming over, 3 have never songkran, and 2 have never been to LOS before, so it's gonna be an eye opener for those guys for sure.

I am looking forward also. My Canon WP DC9 casing for my digi cam is to be delivered tomorrow to protect it from the water throwing.

I must admit, going back through this thread and reading about ice cold water being thrown at you gives me the chills right now as it is -10C and supposed to get colder in the next few days.(not taking into account the wind) brrrrr!!

For any first timers Songkran can be a heap of fun.

Basically all the locals line the streets armed with anything from water pistols all the way up to large buckets. Many have large barrel sized water drums ready to refill their buckets and all mean business.

On the actual Songkran day if you travel more than 100 metres you'll be completely soaked and any electronic gear you're carrying will be ruined if you don't properly water proof it.

If your tuk tuk, or scooter taxi gets stuck in traffic its all over for you with constant dousings, and much of it is chilled water.

I was in Patts last Songkran and my phone got stuffed traveling from Soi 12 to the Big C. At one point there were 20 people all dousing me at in the same location when my scooter taxi got temporarily blocked in the mad traffic.

It's also the custom for people to place hand prints on your face and clothes with what appears to be a brownish muddy mixture.

Scooter taxi drivers refused my fare back as they said it wasn't worth their trouble to be doused 100 times unless I paid double.

I think it's great for the locals and a way for them to let off a bit of steam and built up stress.

Can be a pain if you don't like multiple point blank ice cold soakings from full buckets, even when riding a scooter at speed.

I've been in Kanchanaburi and Bangkok for Songkran (1998, 1999, 2001) and can say it was a real blast every time. Similar to the photos of Patong but Kanchanaburi did not have as many people but the scene was the same. I liked the pickup trucks with people and barrels of water driving around. I do have to admit that the water toys seem to have gotten more sophisticated as there were alot of those pvc contraptions you dipped in a barrel, filled with water, then projected the entire load on someone.

I use one of the bags for underwater photography all of the time and they work well, makes using the controls kind of awkward though, should be ok for street shooting though.

And yes, staying away from riding on a moto is very good advice.
