Songkran 2008
I know the official dates for Songkran is April 13th - 15th but do any of you know when the "official" waterdays are in Bangla Road 2008?
We went there this year and would really like to go again, but my brothers daugther is having her Confirmation party Sunday April 13th., which we have to attend!

We just hope that all the party will not be over on the 15th as that's the first day we will be able to be in Phuket!

The Songkran you will experience in Patong is quit different from the traditional Thai celebrations. It is more like a wild and crazy water festival. If you have not tried it before you will have a lot of fun. Even in more remote area it is getting a little out of hand.
There is a lot of information on the Internet.
You could start with Wikipedia: Thai New Year - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Google search will provide many different sites with information: Songkran Phuket - Google Search
You can also search YouTube, where you will find some Patong-like clips: YouTube - Search Results for “Songkran”

In Phuket it seems to be 12 & 13 April as the main days while people starting on 11th. On 14 its some daytime action but definitely over by the evening.

It is a shame I cant take vacation during Songkran 2008 but I see that in 2009 it coincides with my easter vacation and then I will attend my first Songkran and I will go to Phuket. I am sure it will be fun

Too true. I have had 4 Songkrans on the trot, and the fun has gone for me.
Great for a first timer to experience, but not so enjoyable getting soaked whenever you show your face outside. Made a special point of booking trip to miss it in 2008

I for one will be making it my second priority next year(after golf tournament in home town) to make sure i am in Thailand for Songkran, i love it, acting like a kid for 3 days, i actually start messing about with my rotations now to ensure i will be there.
looking forward to getting covered in icy water already.

Well that's a shame them! Especially the wife had been looking forward to this! I think I agree with most of the other BM's here. After a few times you will get tired of it! So maybe it's good to only take every other year?

I was there last year for my first Songkran, spent the 1st day from 10:00AM till 2:00AM on Bangla, the 2nd day hung out in Karon and the 3rd day I flew up to Bangkok and was on Khao San Road. It was fun the 1st day but.. Khao San Road was out of control. I think it is must for everyone to do once, but I think I will pass this year. If I could do 1 day i think that would be fine..

I have been to Songkan once (Issan) and I would agree that I may not go again ... but I am surely glad I did. I did not have one dull moment. Most would enjoy the first time ... and the younger you are (like me) the more that will be true.

I have to try it once since it is such an important part of Thai culture. Seems to me that many BM's have a great first time experience with it so I just have to give it a try
Is Songkran in Patong as good as it gets??

Its great fun first time Tommy. Have you seen the Songkran pics posted in the gallery? Bangla and Rat -u Thit Rd are crazy.
At least it only goes on for about 3 days in Phuket. Up north I believe its closer to a week of water.

That depends on what you are looking for.
Spending it with many BM's (and BG's): Yes
As authentic as possible: Visit someone in a much smaller community
As much water (and for as long) as possible: Chiang Mai

Well from what you write then I think that Songkran in Patong will be perfect for me
But I have read something about white powder being thrown at you when one is wet, what is that?

Its talcum powder Tommy. Should be dabbed on the forehead or shoulder, but some go a little OTT with it.

Or there again , it may just be talcum powder , the Thais will put a little on your cheeks (for good luck ) but it also gets thrown just to make a nice mess !!!!
