Teaching

So i have been doing a lot of thinking and have decided I am going to look into going back to school for a Degree in Education and then on to a Master's Degree
I havent even decided in what field of Education or whatnot, this is just in the thought process phase
I have set an appointment with the Head of Education at University of British Columbia

I am thinking that in 5 years time, with the money I have made and the 5 years of saving a hell of alot more than i do now, I will have enough money at age 40 to leave Wall St
I am just ready for a new challenge and i cant think of anything better than teaching while still being able to trade my own account to a degree

The thing is, and no offense to English teachers, I would be doing this only if the opportunity is there to teach in other countries, maybe Math or soemthing in Finance.

I had in intersting chat on my last trip to Thailand with a teacher on the plane. She was not an English teacher but taught at one of the better schools and seemed to have a nice set-up.

so would anybody know anybody that teachers in other countries or have any thoughts, I would love to hear them

Oh, and obviosly Thailand would be a place I looked at but would only be one of many countries on my list. That is the reason i put this post in "General" section because it sort of pertains to Thailand

Is that near France?

But seriously, it's nice to see you're looking ahead. I have one friend who teaches psychology. Has taught in the US for many years, and more recently in BKK, and Hong Kong. Another good friend who is currently teaching English in some Chinese city, one of those ones you never heard of. And another friend who is a professor of nuclear physics at UC Berkeley. He is one to the world's leading researchers in the field of subatomic particles. He gets to travel all over the world giving lectures, all expenses paid by the various universities who invite him to lecture. He goes to LOS and lectures in Chiang Mai or BKK, at least 3 times each year.

All three of my friends seem pretty laid back, and enjoying their lives. It's a good life. But they are not big spenders.

Had a friend who was looking into teaching English in LOS about 9 months ago.

He found it wasn`t going to be easy and would only be able to make about 30,000 baht/month salary.

But you do get a work permit and suitable visa.

I have an interview next week in London for a teaching job in China. Although I have no idea if I would take it, if offered yet.

I think that with your background Fianance would be the way to go, as you say. It should be relativly easy for you to get a teaching qualification, well it would be in England anyway.

Best of luck to you. And if your job is going, put my name forward. I have been practising saying "Buy" and "Sell" along with going out on the town with 'clients' until all hours of the morning. See....... im ideal!

As part of my resettlement from the Military, I took the Teaching English as a Second Language courses Parts one and two (Theory and Practical) at the University of Wales. Not a degree course but a necessity to get onto the various TEFL/TESOL placement registers for assignments abroad.

Effectively, you have been assesed as being able to teach English (Read it, Write it, Speak it, Use it constructively in your work place) You will have accrued 30-40 hours of 30-60 minute lesson plans to take with you to start you off.

If you are willing to go for a Bachelors Degree (I am guessing 3 years or so) to get a placement in one of the 'Better' and more recognised schools in various countries, then go for it. Good luck with that, it will be a slog.

I worked in Vietnam (Rural and City, suspicious authorities) Pusan, South Korea (Worked stupid at all hours for little return) and Packed it all in Qing Dao in China when I didn't get paid for three months but had a return flight home.

Not knowing who you are teaching from day to day didn't help as you are unable to prepare correctly and had to take all your lesson plans as a contingency. Eight year olds learning 'Greetings' or Seventeen year olds whose grammar is far more advanced than yours will ever be. Can you start a sentence with the word 'And' Sir?

How do you teach a lesson to a child whose first language isn't English, have a think about that. If you're teaching the sciences.......How? It's difficult and a decision I would hope those thinking about this would ponder long and hard about.

Too many, 'fly by night' walter mitty wannabe teachers, plying their trade in Thailand as far as I can see. Not beneficial for the kids and ripping off the parents who are paying for a non-entity with little or no teaching experience behind them.

In all, I didn't enjoy it and soon fell by the wayside. I met many interesting people along the way, many of whom are still friends. A fifty-five year old couple traveling the world over eight years, teaching for a while somewhere and then moving on. Young people getting a kick from it all. It didn't happen for me.

Just some thoughts in a few sentences. I threw a few grammatical and spelling errors in there for you to spot. Good luck and Non illigitamus carborundum.

PS Buy a tie..........A really, really loud one, that the kids can poke fun at (Plus the school will insist you wear one!)..........I had a Union Jack tie that played the National Anthem..............Good 'ground breaker' for your class.

Yep! But it needed to be said, as there are too many people out there who think the English teaching mullarkey is an easy ride. In my opinion, it isn't!

It's Latin, not Italian (Waits for people to post it's the same thing!) If you mean Maximilliano who sleeps in Jimmy-Jammio's and when he wakes up at four in the afternoon and his BG says you BF'd someone at Sabai Sabai last night and he says "Who" and they all point to the resident ladyboy?

Nope!

If i decided to do this, i would go straight through for a Master's or i wouldnt do it at all. I also wouldnt leave a pretty lucrative career that i have now on a whim. So i wont be doing this to become an English teacher. i would go into a field with a curriculum. Possibly finance or economics with my background .Again this is at the kick-around stage and i really have no clue and why i am meeting with an admissions counselor at University of British Columbia to lay out my goals and see what he ahs to say. this may sound corny, but all i have done in my career is make money for myself and my company, added really nothing career-wise and frankly, although i absolutely love my job and the people i work with, the work i do is not stimulating me anymore
i am in a fortunate situation where i have made very good money and will be able to make very good money while i go to school. i can also trade on my own once i leave the business
i grew up in the projects and went to Nyc with nothing and worked my butt off to get my career, so i dont take things to lightly when it comes to working and my career. i just feel that i would rather be teaching for the last 10-20 years that i would want to continue working

good thread M26.........and it comes at just the right time for me

I was at the funeral of one of my favourite ex-school teachers on friday.....I must admit she had a great bearing on my life as a teacher, a role model and a maternal figure....she taught me at age 9+10 at a time I was going through a rough time at home (marriage break-up)

Just reflecting on her dedication to and love for her pupils and all of the marvellous speakers (I was one....but probably not marvellous) who all had the most insightful thoughts which so echoed mine made me realise that this was a life totaly dedicated to the betterment of others and one which was relatively money poor but life/people rich.......to me this is the true meaning of success....not just how many bucks we can earn

I do a bit of unpaid teaching at the local University School of Architecture and to me it is one of the most rewarding parts of my life...it's only once a week and it's on the "Business of Architecture" (as opposed to Design etc...basically it's how to seek business, maintain clients and manage your business) and it is not part of the curriculum....but it has become a very popular 50 minutes and is now going to be added to the curriculum next year....must say I'm pretty happy about this as it is something these kids need to know...you can be the best designer in the world but if you don't understand business you may never get to show it
