Engagement Ring or Thai Gold
no, not yet! 5555
i just saw a thai video the other day and the man was giving the girl an engagement ring that got me wondering from the guys married already or just people's opinions did or would you give your wife/gf an engagement ring or thai gold? i, personally, find those very thick baht chains hideous and really gawdy.(im sure people will say i am not respecting thai culture) i just find a diamond ring so much classier and also, a little more unuique in LOS my gf knows i find the big thai gold chaind tacky and she also expressed she likes diamond ring also what are your thoughts?

for the thai marriage ceremony it was a simple thai gold wedding ring which was much appreciated, for our anniversary i bought her a decent diamond ring

Marc26 when i saw that topic by you, i freaked.
When me and my TG got engaged, she wanted a diamond ring, which we got in BKK. Thai gold bracelet / necklace followed for the wedding. I think the diamond ring they really like the look of, not so much the money aspect (although that helps) I know my TG is equally impressed with a cheap $20 CZ ring, which sparkles back at her, even when she knows what it costs. Wish she had told me that before we bought the real one. Cheers Simon

a american i know bought a country tg a beautiful diamond ring to impress her, he really wanted to marry her, but knew she was being romanced by several other internet bfs, so he visited her village and gave her the engagement ring.
being a girl who had never left home and had never seen many diamonds before she was most impressed with the ring. she and her mother took it to the diamond shop in town to get it valued, fake diamond and value nix, that was the end of the relationship and potential marriage. later she married a quite wealthy usa man and got the real thing.

when buying diamond rings in LOS i belive that once purchased the shop will give the lady a card with a picture of the ring and diamond along with the following information
type of gold i.e the carrott or Baht the quality of the diamond/s origin of said diamond/s estimated value (thb) should it ever make its way back to the shop for pawning etc.

I'd go with a nice diamond engagement ring, maybe diamond and sapphires, then thai gold ring for the wedding. I like you Paul do not like the colour of Thai gold and think it looks gawdy, but then thais do not like the colour of UK gold and think it looks cheap??
I prefer thai gold therefore in smaller weights, 2 bht way to big for a necklace in my opinion, which is good as the less it weighs is obviously cheaper for me. The other aspect is, buy too large a piece of jewellary and they cannot wear it when they want for fear of theft, so again a smaller piece is less obvious and less attractive for theives. SWee got this one sorted perfectly!!! Dodger Khee Neow (and no Padmac I do not have your umbrella, but I might know a man who does!!!)

OK, probably stupid follow-on question but what is Thai gold and how does it differ from UK gold? I'm familiar with gold from the Saudi souks (gold shop) but have never heard anything about Thai gold. Also, what is a "baht chain?" tks

since I have a moral commitment to not buy conflict"blood" diamonds I have kept the carat count on the ring to less than 1/2 carat(ok maybe I'm a bit cheap)
 . She's small so no big ring on her hand. Also a simple one baht chain with heart pendant looks good and tastefull maybe two baht is ok. Anything more is getting near the Mr. T starter kit size.Buy the chain in China town area in Bangkok. The ring near were they sell the guns near Chinatown. I didn't spend the two months salary propoganda that they try to tell you in the states.

Thai gold is pure, 24 carat, so is very soft and looks a bright yellow against uk gold being 14 to 18 carat, looking more dull and lighter yellow but infinitely stronger.
Thai gold is sold by weight and the weight description is referred to as 'a baht' not to be confused with their currency which isalso baht. I baht of gold at the moment I think is about 12,000 bahts, nearly £200. Not of course that I know anything about Thai gold, never been there, never will.......................well okay for birthday and christmas and and smoothing over ploblems and well you all know!!!!

Add myself to the diamand ring section as well. It's a nice small one with 4 little embedded stones. In addition to 2 matching golden rings for the pair of us.

From what I hear many Thai girls will prefer Thai gold because they can go to a shop and get around 95% of the value back by selling it. With European gold or a diamong ring they will not get nearly as much back if they sell it.

Farang Gold with Diamonds for Engagement for her and Thai Gold as Wedding Rings. Thai Gold is much too soft to wear it daily and mine really looks shabby after more than 4 years. It looks more like we found it in a Celtic grave than in a gold shop in BKK. My wife wants me to wear it and I worry if I take off I´ll lose it. And wearing gloves isn´t an alternative for me either. So it won´t look better. The wife says that doesn´t mind we can just exchange it on our next holiday and we get a new one. Do they sell stainless-steel or Titanium in LOS?

Lost me a bit there Itsmeg, why would you advise thai gold for the wedding ring to then say it gets really shabby quickly??
Are you advising only wearing it occasionally?? or that to buy as a annually renewable object?? Otherwise cannot understand what you have recommended??

I'd join the group that went for a nice diamond ring in western gold. Nothing too flash, just a nice simple looking ring. Thai gold , like Indian and Arabic is too soft, and won't last too long. 18carat is the best IMO. Purer gold (than 9ct), but harder than the 22-24carat Asian.
Anyway, have you never heard of the phrase "Diamonds are a girls best friend"?

Ead have a diamond ring but the engagement rings are basic Thai gold rings with our names engraved into it.
Ead loves both gold and diamonds. No, the gold Ead have, she dont wear it in public. Only on special occassions. Wearing too much gold is an invite for robbers.

i think its a bit of an invite to be a target to wear the ostentatious wealth especially up north.
wife generally does not wear her gold in a visible way when in a different town or when visiting other provinces. she never wears it in bkk also. must agree that the thai gold seems to age rapidly, and starts to look like a base metal after a short while. wifes view is the necklace/ring for the wedding, will never be traded in etc, as they are important items, so the old look of the items is just like the marriage, changing as we change and develop. the one big difference i seem to notice and this is generalizing with exceptions of course, is expats up north, seem to rarely wear gold, whilst in phuket its "look at me girls, look how rich i am" (we have all seen the euro farang about 50- 60 yrs old with about 10 bt gold around his neck), who are they trying to impress? maybe in a penniless village in the issan, they would be impressed.
