Christmas Tree
My wife and I are off to get a Christmas tree today. Not my idea–hers.
Now, she's a devout Buddhist (spent her past life as a monk and is convinced her reincarnation as a stone fox is some kind of cosmic joke), but she is completely fascinated by Christmas trees.
When we first moved to the US, I took her for a walk in a pine forest. She was running around the woods pointing, "Is that one a Christmas tree? What about that one?"
I don't know why she's so into the idea, but now it's finally our first US Christmas and we're off to select a tree. The weird thing is we're going to be getting a tree from a lot run by another Thai woman, who sells trees to pay for her yearly trip to Thailand. (Imagine a Thai woman standing in the snow everyday selling Christmas trees).
My mom has loaned us some lights and antique ornaments from her boxes and boxes of Xmas paraphernalia. It's going to be a fun day.

Have a fun day Mr Lucky. Did your Thai wife celebrate Christmas in the traditional "western" way with present exchange etc. If not, she will be like a big kid on the 25th. She'll love it!

Thanks guys.
Hmm. Exchanging presents....do you think a Thai woman would like that?
Thanks for the invite, Marc26. Let me know when your gf is arriving. Could do it in the New Year if things are too hectic before Xmas.

She doesn't really buy the whole Christmas season thing though. She's already sick of Christmas music.

You should get the dvd of "A Christmas Carol" with Allister Sims. Scrooge will scare her into liking xmas. 55555 Lots of ghosts too.

She's running around the apartment now, singing the Jingle Bell Rock song with new lyrics: "Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell ASS!"

I had a christmas tree last year and we had a santa claus on Christmas eve, will do it again this year. If I didnt have a child I wouldnt bother, but as I have a child now I enjoy my traditions and want my daughter to be aware of my traditions.

My Child (spinner) is on at me to go for the tree thing.. Not done it since coming to Thailand and to be honest dot really feel like doing it here this year.
Also I feel you either have to do it big style or not bother, half hearted just looks lame.

We did the tree, lights, baloons and tinsel stuff last year, even put some false snow on the windows, definately do it again this year, as Alec will be about 17 months so should really enjoy it as well (probably electrocute himself on the lights and eat the tinsel, but heck he's a boy!!).
Reckoning on 2 christmases this year as Nicke has invited us for a Swedish Christmas on 24th and then we can do ours on the 25th, Can you get too much of Christmas celebrating???? nah!!!

Nice to see that people still appreciate the holiday.
Nowadays the tree to me would just be more work.
Gifts are a chore that I hope to get done quick and painless(internet shopping).
I look forward to the days off from work.
I have some fresh real snow here if anyone wants it.(wish I were in LOS!).
After writing this I probably should be posting in the other "baa hum bug" thread.

A bought a fiber optic tree a few years back. It's still hypnotic to look at. Go to the closet, pull it out of the box and plug her in. Sorted. Merry LaLa

Couldn't find a fibre optic tree so had to improvise. This one is more catatonic than hypnotic.

come to Boston
Christmas Eve is huge with the Italian-Americans, then Midnight Mass
wake up Christmas Day and start all over again from opening presents at 7am, then drinking and eating until 7-8pm

I didn't do trees for all the years I lived in Asia, so it's kind of nostalgic to have one again. The smell is wonderful and it looks pretty great with the lights.
And, as with so many of the mundane Western things I've returned to, it's ten times as fun when viewed through the eyes of my wife (who was a monk in her past life, not her former life - i.e. she was a monk, died, and was reincarnated as a woman).

Mrs Viking is on about putting the tree up tonight and may be a couple of drinkie pooos.
But last year being the first christmas for the step daughter was a fun sight as she had never celerbrated it before. Now you all know how Thai`s do not like to open presents given to them in front of people, well it took an age to convince her it was ok ,mind you she was very good she unwrapped each present one by one examined it and put each presents wrapping paper in the bin before opening another.it seemed to take for ever ,well long enough for me and the mrs to go through a bottle and half of bubbly.
i know this year she is quietly excited about it the same as any 8 year old .
i will try and dig out the pictures.
