That sucks, M26. Don't know much about Canadian visas, so I can't offer any constructive advice. The whole visa thing just seems so random. Someone's future wife can't get through but someone else's holiday fling gets six months...
The only thing we can do is dot the i's and cross the t's.

Paul, after reading the thread again, I think the missing link was a kind of official financial guarantee letter, which was to be issued by you. Of course I do not know the Canadian rules for vacation visas, but this is how I understood it. I can just imagine how upset Ao must have been.
In my case and for Ta's holiday day visa which is valid max. 90 days, I have to provide a handwritten invitation letter, salary slips of the last 3 months with matching print outs of my bank statements where is shown that he salary really was paid to me. And finally an invitation/guarantee letter which is legalized by the some civil cervant in my local City Hall.
Beside her passport, Ta has to provide letters that makes it clear she will return to Thailands before the expiry date of her visa, a return ticket and a health/travel insurance covering the entire duration of her stay.
The main reason for a visa refusal by the Dutch embassy is called "danger of settlement", hence the visitor will not return to the home country after the visa expires. Is that the same for the Canadian one?
Anyway, I truly feel sorry for you both and pray to Buddha we will be spared from this verdict next month.

I think it all depends on "who" handles the application in the embassy and what there state of mind is that day. I hate that. Nanook had to make an handwritten invitation for holland. I made a printed one and was just fine. Nanook send bankstatements, i didn't and they didn't ask. Just a copy of my Annual report of my company and my taxform, no further questions. She went to Dutch embassy at 10 am with all, had an interview for 15 minutes and the day after 1 pm she got a call that she could come and take her visa.
Later i logged in at the website off the department where all rules for visa-application are posted. I didn't even send half of all documents they posted on there. So why didn't the lady at the ambassy asked for them???? I realy don't know!!! I guess we were just lucky that she had a good day......!!
Good luck Paul, I'm hope it will work out next time.

I get the impression Paulie will have included his banking info, but none for Ao.. We have a mate who got a recent GF into canada who put a chunk of money in her account and she breezed through.
I suspect comparing canada and schengen to be pretty different. Schengen is pretty easy IMO, some basic paperwork and some indication of a probability of return.

Sorry to hear Ao got turned down Paulie - especially after the time you've been together, would hope that either getting married and/or re-applying with funds in her bank would get her through next time. Good Luck.

Its just such a pisser that its something like visa regs that forces you to marry, it kinda pressures things when even if its your ultimate plan, its not the way you really want to go..
Then again, my sis in law married a guy after 3 months because of visa's.. And they seem truly happy and settled.

Not sure about Canada, but i can try to help with what i wrote by myself in the application:
1: Invitation letter, this letter needs to clearly state that you will take care of all expenses during her visit. Also include what the purpose of her visit is.
What i wrote here is basicly, that we wanna try to live together on a normal basis and see how it works out with the cultural differences, and also if we can get along well enough to take the next big step in our relationship. I also wrote that its important for me that my girlfriend gets a chance to meet my family. I wrote about an A4 with some more details.
2: Proof of relationship, Pictures, Emails, Phonecalls etc that can prove how long you been together and also specify in a short little story how it all began etc. Here i also wrote how we met, how we got to know each other, how many times ive been visiting Thailand. And a little about what we have done together.
I sent 4 photos dated and explained. I also wrote that we used MSN, and VOIP (Voice over IP) for communcations.
3: Proof of economy, Not needed in Sweden, But if i were you i would try to get a letter from my employer stating how long you worked for the company and that you have a fulltime position. Also ofcourse a few months pay stubs along with a bank statement.
I think thats pretty much all i can think of.
Not sure if thats any help at all, but anyways im sure you will work it out!

Maybe a good idea to contact immigration department in your own country. A friend of mine had an rejected application for Thai girlfriend. He complained at immigration department. Immigrations requested embassy in Bangkok to send the application file to Holland. After a few phone calls for some further information to my friend they approved her visa and they contacted embassy in Bangkok to give the visa. Maybe rejected due to communication problems before. Who knows!!

This was on the air last night on the local talk radio show here in Toronto. Basically the gist was the government is exploring the possibility of taking money or bonds for visitor visas from family and friends for allowing them into the country. Basically an assurance bond is available at most banks or insurance companies for a nominal fee. Overwelmingly (100%) from the caller the consensus was that it was a great idea. Many welcomed smooth procedures for bringing in friends or family for a short visit.

Despite all the hassle around her visa, but this is great news. I wish you and Ao a wonderful life together.

Seems like a good decision to me, 4 years of long distance relationship cant be good for anyone. Anyways, best of luck with that, wish i could be there for the party!

Paul,
My first thought was to just check in at your local MP's constituancy office. they generally try to help these things and a quick call from them does wonders. Not sure that would work as you're not a citizen of Canada, therefore not a constituant, but it might. Better yet, I'm sure your employer has status, have him call.
