Soi Sansabai

Came back from Soi Sansabai today. Now the second time I have had a run in with the idiots down there charging to park. Was in to have lunch at one of the restraunts only to be to be told that, my mate and I would need to pay 20 baht each for the motorbikes. Motorbikes parked right in front of the reaturant to eat at. Asked the staff about it. No answer from them. So I told them I pay to park I will not order. Was not able to find the owner. So just wondering.

1. Do the owners of these businesses know they are probably loosing customers? I personally will never go back again and not recommend anyone to go there because of this.

2. What happens if you are staying at one of the hotels for lodging. Do u pay everytime? Won't be recommending to anyone to stay on that Soi if so.

3. Are the owners getting a cut on this 20baht?

I have seen this same greediness happen to places in Mexico. And guess what there is only so much gouging prices and greed that the tourists and locals will take. Very soon people look else where. Which I am guessing is starting to happen in Phuket. I have. Sad but true.

I tend to agree. It`s not so much the money, but the fact that someone else has found another way to make us farang put our hand in our pocket and make themselves rich that i don`t like.
What service have they provided to warrant payment?
As soon as it started in Soi San Sabai it started in Soi Sunset(who knows where next) and the secure parking at the end of San Sabai put their price up from 10 baht to 20 baht!!

Who said competition leads to lower prices.

A baht bus same as Pattaya would be the answer!!

Is this only happening during the day?? I always park my bike in Sansabai when I venture down Bangla in the evening and have never paid a Baht. I wouldn't say paying 20 Baht would deter me from using the soi though, still loads cheaper than taxi there and back. Only 10 baht in Soi Sunset in the evenings.

It is all explained (???) by the following note I found on my motorbike a few months ago (yes, this is the actual English translation):

NOTICE

Soi Sansabai , since 1 October 2550 from now on , owner way , will store the value parts a car that come in to stop in Soi Sansabai, private land motorcycle itch [sic.] vacate 20 baht , car itch vacate 40 baht , in order that , for the convenience , and the orderliness in the traffic , then inform come to know by all together , inquire the data , 086 – 7456449 , done to a turn.

Sorted!

Yes, I pay 20 baht every day since few months back. Bill at Summerbreeze not happy either, as his staff have to pay too and part of the road belongs to his property.

But I wouldnt say its targeted towards farangs, Thais have to pay aswell.

Its a private road and the landlord can do what he want. But I have to say one thing is better, its not double or triple rows of motorbikes anymore that stops the traffic.

In Sweden you have to pay for parking almost everywhere, and it is an hourly rate and you pay a lot more, compared to that, 20 baht is cheap.

I understand your frustration. Soi Sansabai is a private road, so they're just charging for the use of parking there.

The owners of businesses there do not get a cut of the parking fees. Some of the businesses there can purchase a specific amount of tickets from the owners of the street.

I know Summer Breeze purchases XX amount of tickets each month and will give them to any customers that stay there so they don't have to pay each time. It's also a pay as you arrive, not a pay for each day.

Come and go 5 times in 1 day and they'll try and get you for 5 parking fees....

It is what it is I guess. If you don't want to pay, then try and find a parking spot on Rat-u-tit road or along the beach.

Popped into Summer Breeze today, the meter man was straight on me. I told him I was just going to be 5 minutes and then off, so not paying. He then asked the staff in SB if I was staying there, they of course said no, so he then tried again to make me pay. I told him again, no, because I was just popping into Sb and would leave in less than 5 minutes, he wasn't happy and let me know, but feck him.

Far end of the soi has been charged for ages but this trying to make you pay when you are using businesses in the soi, will in my opinion harm business for the owners. Yes it is only 20 baht but its a soi in a town, I use only when using the businesses in that soi, if I end up parking elsewhere, heh there's businesses elsewhere that can sell me their stuff instead.

Little greedy and very shortsighted by the soi owners. Anyway I'm human and don't like change!!!! (things altering not small coinage)

I'm just going to interupt this thread for the purposes of asking Dodger for a lift on the 12th January! Dodger, can you give me a lift on the 12th of January? It's a bit late like!

Back to the thread, best place to park is Bangla, they chain your bike up and everything! Safe as houses. Won't get stolen from there I can tell you!

Give the parking space along the road to the businesses in the soi, for their guests, would be most fair for everyone.

And everybody else could use the parking at the end, e.g. bangla strollers.

That's the way Nicke, you tell em.
Any chance of you telling your bar landlord, that your customers would like to take a piss for free?.

I believe the toilets get rented out so the soi owners don't have to worry about staff, cleaning and staff ripping them off.

Independent business owners I guess LOL

Last chat I had with Bill at SB he was working on that. If you are a guest at the hotel you park in his designated slots FOC.

12th Bernie, any chance of a lift?

We can sort Craig out with a colostomy bag or summink!

Im suprised that no one has bought a plot of land on the outscirts of PAtong and used it as a park and ride scheme. Pay like 100-150b, then get free taxis to and from Bangla, with secure patrolled parking.

If I was Thai and had money, its what I would look into.

I know this was covered in another thread recently.
Just a couple of observations.

1)Everyone pays..Thai and Farangs
2)Only paid once per day and kept the receipt and showed them if I arrived and left 5 times.

What really annoys me is the soi owners and the police want it both ways. If it’s a private street and they want to charge for parking that’s Ok, but when the police are locking up bikes with chains for parking on the wrong side of the Soi, then something’s just not right.

Personally I don’t have a problem with this. They own the street and can do as they please. And of course you cannot just say that you want to “pop in” for five minutes. What are they going to do if you do not come back in that time-frame? Write you a parking ticket?

What amazes me more is that they have yet to charge in the late afternoon / night.

More interesting is the “scheme” they have going up in Laem Sing. At least according to some “official” (in the Phuket Gazette), the guys organizing the parking do not actually own the land, but you only pay for them to “take care” of your vehicle. Wonder what would happen if you recline to pay. I’m hoping this particular “scheme” does not catch on. More extortion than service IMO.

I rememebr a similar scheme in Liverpool during the 1970s and 1980s. However, on your return, the car would be up on bricks and the wheels missing.

Come and visit sunny South Africa.
We have a wonderful profession called car guards.
On just about every street there is a dude in a yellow bib who you pay independently to 'look after your car" Five bucks and it should still be there and largely intact when you return.
I pay for the privilege of secure underground parking at work. A few years ago there was a blitz and a number of cars were broken in to, mine included
They stole my cd player, a few cd's and my Okleys....
Phoned building management and they just said "Did you see the sign .at your own risk"
Figured that I was better of paying some Nigerian five bucks to look after it.
But at the end of the day, rather they have a semi legit job guarding cars then having to resort to crime.
Just out of interest, I was leaning against a tree one day waiting for a friend of mine to come out of the bank (it was far too hot to sit in the car) And this guy came up to me, greeted me, dug in his pocket and handed me some money. I asked him what he was doing and his answer was, aren’t you a car guard??? Easiest five rand I ever made….

….

Similar story to every city in the UK, Park up & Pay up or car not intact on your return.

True, but it is still interesting that “officials” here openly explain (and even implicitly condone) such behavior. I mean, Laem Sing mid-afternoon is hardly a crime infested hotspot. Got to give the guys there some respect though (I guess) for their ingenuity. At the very least I have not heard of a single motorbike being stolen there, so I guess the “protection” works.

Here’s the “official” explaining it, BTW (reposted). Comforting to know that if you do not pay, “this does not give them the right to harm your vehicle”:

“If you pay to park there, it is understood that the locals will watch out for your car while you are at the beach.

If you refuse to pay, however, this does not give them the right to harm your vehicle. The locals do not own the roadside there; it is public property and anyone is allowed to park there without paying a fee."

Like Nicke was saying, one pay for parking in most developed countries. If there is a buck to be made in this why will developing countries not catch up to this.Maybe we should get used to it somehow.

i will say
i parked my motorbike there one day and left the keys in the ignition, by mistake
when i came up to my bike, the lady came running over and gave me my key that she took out of the ignition for my benefit

Funnily enough, I reckon 5 baht is a small price to pay for nice clean toilets in Soi Eric. I'd rather pay 5 baht than stand in a toilet swimming with p1ss and no clean wash facility.

Craig, drink less, p1ss less 5555
