Dodger, you'll find the shirtless mob can be from anywhere in Oz......It's not a state thing.
As for the accents...well living here you don't seem to notice it..much.
I have found from my travellings around the country, that folk from Tasmania & Sth Aus & WA, may speak a little different to the eastern coast folks & there are some words with differing pronunciations.
One small example comes to mind....the word "castle"
Here in NSW we pronounce the word, like rhyming it with parcel.
In Vic & I may be right in saying other southern states?, they pronounce it, rhyming it with tassle. (Cassel)
Try it out on some Aussies & see if you can guess where they're from.

easyrider you forgot the queenslander's who after making a statement always say "Eh pronounced A".
For instance they say that we went to the pub last night (Eh).
I worked there for a year and got pissed off asking why do they finish a sentence with a question. No one could answer, they looked at me as though I was crazy.
Even after explaining it to them it still had no effect.
And sorry to say that most of the Aussie's I have seen on holidays put us Brits to shame in the bad behaving stakes, mostly for being rude and obnoxious when they are in large groups.

Can this be said also of Australia, are the shirt off, aussis aussie aussie types from certain parts of Australia or just that type of person irrespective where they are from?
I only ask because I listen to accents and the broader aussie accent, does seem to be more their tongue rather than the slightly softer accent from say south east, or is it they just speak louder, so it sounds like that?
Please accept I'm an inquisitive pom and not trying to stir anything here but just wondering.

That is when the bad behaviour usually starts. A bunch of guys (usually under 21) with too much ale inside them and in a foreign country and they feel they have to impress the group by being outrageous or rude.
Doesn't matter where in the world you come from, we all recognise them.
Young Brits abroad in in groups of 4 or more make me ashamed when I see their antics.
Maybe its my generation, but when I was a lot younger, the guys of my age weren't like this. Then again, travel abroad was only for those who had really good money. Now its affordable to everyone.

Part of the reason that i don't bother going out much in Sydney is exactly that - too many loud mouth idiots looking for a fight/stabbing/shooting etc ...........
Of course we have a pathetically inept justice system here that dishes out severe floggings with a wet lettuce leaf as punishment for most of these fools ..........
What these imbeciles would cop in Thailand would be a huge shock to them ........and boy I'd love to see their faces when punishment Thai style is dished out .

I wouldnt say they were much larger, maybe 3-4 over your 2-3. Although i don't think I have seen a group of americans that size over here - not in the bars anyway.

In Britain a lot of the communities are small villages which have green spaces of a few miles before you come to the next village.
So the people you go to school with are the people who you have your first drink with. That group will then go drinking together in the nearest big town and also decide to go abroad together.
Even in larger towns the pattern is the same.
Can't explain for the Aussies...maybe the are still influenced by our genes?

Us Anlgo-Saxons are tribal! Simple as that. Where I work and live, the rivalry between suburbs/villages (for you Poms) is amazing. Diffierent schools, etc.!!!

I noticed the change tone in Phuket, it had changed rapidly in just over a year. June 2006 - everyone seemed to be having fun, November 2007 was as many had described.
I'm bored of phuket now tbh, booking my flight to krabi (fancy a change and more laid back holiday) then off to bangkok for the more fun stuff
I really hope the scum are sorted out as it gives westerners a bad name. As mentioned people from the UK have a got bad name in ibiza, api naya etc thanks to the knuckle dragging scum budget holiday lowlife scum. I go to thailand to get away from these *****

Same here probably ......groups are formed through schools , certain suburbs and then by ethnicity ............these groups hang out here in large lots of 10 - 15 ..........I guess when there's an overseas trip beckoning not all of the boofheads can go but you can still get the 4 or 5 ..........which is enough to cause a problem ..........vandalism around Sydney is rife ...most of it is from drunken fools carrying on like animals once they leave the pub ....as a former railway station worker I copped loud mouth clowns on many occasions ..........in the end I left before I delt out my own form of justice and ended up in prison ..........

tons of misbehaving Ozzies in Rock City when I was there in December! Nothing much inside but when they poured out , saw a few fights going on.
Would never step foot into the place again coz of the falangs and the cheesy music (ok , I liked it the first time!) if not for the cute waitresses!

Because they wouldn't have the balls to pull off the crap they do on their own. Even in Perth the Yobbo behaviour pisses me off. Act like a human ( a man at least) snapperheads.
