Phuket Airport trouser-filling takeoff
Holy cow! I bet a lot of the Russkis on this IL86 had to change their trousers after this take-off!! Talk about using the whole length of the runway!

It's a Vaso Airlines Ilyushin 86 taking off (just) from Phuket about a year ago....with a heavy load by the looks of it. I wonder what was going through the crews' minds as the end of the runway loomed up!!

Ski Jump
Could be that the pilot and First Officer are ex-Soviet Navy aviators. Used to the excitement of a "ski-jump" launch. (Google: "soviet aircraft carrier ski jump")
OTOH, jet pilots generally choose their takeoff power settings (airliners generally do not takeoff at full throttle) such that the plane will rotate at a calculated point. That point is such that were the takeoff to be aborted the craft could safely come to a stop in the remaining runway. There are even designated spots at airports where the plane could park while its brakes cooled.

Phew!! That was close!! It looks like some, if not most of the wheels are still on the ground. And there appears to be a small fence at the far side of the grass - I wonder if it's still there now!!
I wonder if the pilot(s) reported that (near miss) !!

Scary looking take off Rex.
Don't know why, but my instinct for survival kicks in when I hear the word Ilyushin, or Russian aircraft.
It's a bit of a worry if the length of Phuket's take off runway/s is/are designed without margin for error.

It was probably a very hot day with no headwind to help and a heavy load. ...or maybe they were having a little game of "russian roulette" to see how long they could leave it before rotating :-) I've seen 747s take off...wouldn't know if they were fully loaded...but be at 1000 feet by the time they went over the threshhold.

At the end of my last trip to Phuket (Dec '06) I flew from HKT back to BKK with Thia Airways on a 747. We took-off to the east and we were in the air after about 2/3rds of the runway. It's only a short flight to BKK (1hr 20mins -ish) so it doesn't need a lot of fuel; also I saw them load the aircraft (which I do at Heathrow) and they didn't load any cargo, so my flight would be considered as 'light'.
You have to remember that you must consider the length/distance of the flight being undertaken, and how much fuel will be used. That Vaso Airlines flight may have been going to Russia, so needs a lot of fuel.
