Thai Smoking Ban takes Effect Feb 11th

From this weeks Stick:-

Quote:
For smokers, enjoy puffing away with impunity while you can because from February 11 smoking will be banned in all restaurants and bars nationwide. Word on the street is that enforcement of the smoking ban will be widespread - and that includes spots popular with farangs.

Rumors say that it will only affect indoor-places in Patong..........Guess we have to wait and see how the police will handle it................................

Thailand joins world with smoking ban in bars | Lifestyle | Reuters

Quote:
BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand will extend its ban on smoking to air-conditioned bars and offices and outdoor markets next month, joining major developed countries in a war on tobacco, a leading Thai anti-smoking agency said on Friday.

Smokers faced a 2,000 baht ($60) fine and owners who fail to enforce the law could be fined 20,000 baht ($600) after the ban takes effect on February 17, said the Thailand Health Promotion Institute, which helped push for the law.

I live in California which is one of if not the first states to start these laws. This drove smokers to stand outside the doorways of restaurants and bars to have their smokes. Then they passed laws that you could not stand in front of a doorway to smoke. Then they passed laws that you cannot smoke within a certain distance from the door. There are towns that are 100% non smoking. There are non smoking laws for apartment buildings. They just passed a smoking ban in some parks. I think there is a law that you cannot smoke in your car if a child is a passenger.

The restaurant/bar ban was supposed to protect the workers in these establishments. Not the patrons.

I don't smoke except for an occasional cigar. So the ban is good for me.

In San Francisco you can run along the beach naked smoking a joint and no one will care. But if you light up a cigarette you will get your ar$e kicked.

Although being a smoker, I slowly don't get excited about this kind of news anymore.

There's no other way than just accepting it, seems like no way to escape. It goes like a red line throughout the world.

Wasn’t there a similar ban (in effect or just proposed) going on a few years ago? I seem to recall the same language used (air-conned places). Around that period, Scruffy Murphy’s on Bangla had a non-smoking policy; for a short period of time at least.

We’ll see how it pans out. I don’t really mind much as I’m trying to cut down anyway. But I guess it could affect a lot of places (like Dragon?).

Cool Last Time

The last time was directed at enclosed placed and those with air con.Bars that are open to the air were not included.

Will have to see how they define enclosed bars.

interesting

...(lights up a cigerette) ....interesting stuff.......well I smoke and actually like these laws. I dont smoke because I want to anymore. I m more like a crackhead addicted to nicotine. I have tried to quit, and make attempts all the time. I do hate when eating and someone lights up (roomate does this). Its all for the best. Hopefully our childrens children wont be exposed to any cigeretts at all.

i see her puffing her cigarette down to the last stub and she does it walking into the door
i finally asked her to finish her cigarette before she gets to the doorway

I only smoke when I drink ...........I can't see how they could ban smoking in and around Bangla with most of the bars being open air.

It's great coming home from a night out and not smelling of smoke anymore.

A good law IMO.

Shame we are not classed by our governments to be adult and allowed to make some of our own choices. Why cannot they not just leave the option to the bar/restaurant owner, customers can then decide where to go, staff can decide if they mind or not working in smoking establishment. People will vote with their feet, but people who like to smoke with their beer will still have that choice.

A pathetic law IMO
