how do i tell the boss i am off for a month!
Hi guys- a bit of a dilemma:
You know when you are experiencing the blackest day of your life- that flight out of Phuket and your only thoughts are of returning asap.
You get home and what do you do- straight on the net, check your diary and you book your next flight.
I did that, got greedy and decided it was going to be a 4wk trip this time (yahooo!)
Then reality sets in, you have a job and is your boss going to take kindly to you telling him you will be off for a month?
ok i get 4wk annual leave but to take it all at once and in the first 3 months isnt really fair and i bet i want to return again before the years out.
I have kept it to myself for 10wks now and april is looming.
Ok they could say no- and i will say well i am sorry its booked.
They could say yes but you are not getting paid for the final 2wks
They could say no and i can hand my notice in the day before (bit drastic) and then come back because they have no chance of replacing me in 4wks.
How would you guys play it? employers how would you react to it?- legally i wouldnt have thought employers can do anything about it?
thanks guys, its beginning to play on my mind now

I guess you should just talk to your boss, and negotiate something.
Dont do anything mad you will regret later.

I have this problem with my boss every time I take holidays.
When he tells me I can only take week blocks at a time,I just let him know "maybe its time I looked for another job"
has aproved my leave the past 5 years as I wanted it.

Well I guess it depends on your relationship.. I have to say that I would never just up sticks and leave an employer in the lurch, not on a job where I was treated with respect etc.
As to being told you get 2 weeks unpaid.. You cant expect any better than that can you ?? You taking extra vacation.

i am fortunate that my boss loves his time off so he is pretty liberal with us but i still dotn have a lot of holiday time
depends on what type of job you have. if its a career, then you have to make that a priority. if its just a job that pays the bills, you can just get a new one, no?

You should talk to your boss asap, either way it goes you will get an answer and get it behind you! Much better than telling him "... oh, by the way, I'm taking off on Monday for a month, see ya when I get back..." That won't go over very well! On the + side more notice is better than less, make sure you have a someone to cover your critical stuff while you are gone. Tell your boss you got a great deal on the web and couldn't pass it up?

You should run out and buy the book "the 4 hour workweek"...it has all kinds of ideas how you can start to establish a "work from home" relationship with the office and one that eventually allows you time to work from all over the world.
Does it work? I don't know but there are some interesting ideas. Like faking a family illness and being away for a week...but then making it the absolute most productive week you have ever had at work. Then the next time you want to go away or something you can always point to that week as the one you were away but were dynamite productive, so you can be trusted to work away from the office, etc.
I don't know. The book is kind of a fun read I think and an idea generator!
Cheers, Robaht

I've learned in life that worrying about something you cannot completely control is a waste of effort. Tell him as soon as possible, judge the rest of the discussion as it developes, not by trying to plan answers to situations that might arise.
The more time he has, the more he can plan for you not being there, you have 4 weeks holiday so you are not overbooking, and if it goes bad apologise and do not act so rashly in the future.

In my office, we first check out with your 'direct colleagues' if there will be an adequate staff available in the period you want to go. If yes, then you can just go ahead and book. Max. duration is 4 weeks provided you have the days available.
For me no problem, as I started this year with 83 paid holidays. Think I will sell back to the company about 20. Because during the year, I get compensated in days, if I have to work on a weekend day.

You should have discussed it with your boss BEFORE booking it off.
What is the norm regarding having more than 2 weeks off? If other people have been refused, then the precedent is set.
Is there anything in your contract of employment that states rules regarding annual leave. What sort of company do you work for, and how many other people do the same job as you?

OK , what happens if your boss agrees to let you take 4 weeks this time , no more holidays for a year !!!!!
If you then decide you want another trip what do you do , if you pack the job in you will no doubt have to "pay back" some of the holiday entitlement you have already used.
Best advice , have a chat with him now and see if you can come to some mutually acceptable solution (ie. 2 weeks paid leave and 2 weeks unpaid) , then at least you'd still have some time to take later in the year.

You should have made the arrangements before booking your holiday, if you were already employed by them or You could have told them prior to you starting this job that you have already booked it, then they would have had no choice.
At my last job one person was told that they could not have a 2 week holiday due to the amount of staff off but still booked it. So they left and we could get agency staff in, who then replaced them.
If I was your emploer I would not be happy.

I always got a 4 weeks holiday when I wanted in any employer I had until now. But I never booked before I had the OK.
Usually I already announced it in January/February for December and New year. So the holiday was still far away and in most cases they will say OK. And when they were not saying OK I just added some special reason, like my brother will marry there or something like that. Then they always said its OK.

my boss is pretty easygoing when it comes to holiday. i lead a team of 8 persons and we all have 6 weeks off. i only have to make sure that the person that replaces me is around during the time i'm away.
i have 2 rules when somebody from my team asks for vacation.
1. there must be enough staff around (minimum 5 persons)
2. they must still have the needed days to take the time off
everybody on the team has access to the vacation plan so they can check beforehand if it is possible to have vacation.

when negotiating vacation times i suggest you inform your boss asap and also inform your HR dept.
You may well have for weeks a year but if that is your limit would it really be a wise move to take it all at once.Unpaid time of may be a bind but you could put the hours in before hand to make the money up that you will not be making.
But first and fore most future employers do not look to kindly at past employment being lost due to a vaction time that they could not cover.

I think you know you should have asked before booking your trip, but its too late for that now. I would see him ASAP and let him know you have been a bit presumptuous in booking without asking, and whether its OK. Apologise as well!
If its not, take two weeks unpaid leave and do some grovelling.
I would also mention the possibility of wanting time off later in the year as well.
At the moment you are holding him to ransom by having already booked. Either he lets you go, or sacks you 5555

Tell him you found a trip to Thailand for 1 month, that was so cheap you had to take it. 1/4 of the price or something...
Then tell him you will sign up for overtime if he need when you come home....

Why just a month off????
Tell him you quit, and you want a years salary and benefits, as severance package. (then you can find a more understanding employer) 5555
Tell him you'll bring him up on "sexual harassment" charges...and claim that he made gay advances toward you!
(It worked in the movie, "American Beauty")

i feel ashamed reading all your replies, i have obvioussly been somewhat selfish, but you must have been in the same position where you think, well what can they do, they cant sack/fire you.
i extended my last holiday by 3 days, told them i missed the flight and they were only every 3 days back. no one said a thing, they wernt bothered.
i am actively seeking new employment anyway so that would be a much more serious blow to them; so i could throw that in the mix.
i will get my story together and deliver the bad news friday i think, then they can worry all weekend.
i will keep the sexual harassment idea up | |
