Alcohol ban during the elections...
Hey guys/girls,
I was reading in the news section that will be an alcohol ban for 2 weeks during the election. Does anyone know what this means? I'm coming to LOS 20 feb (2 days before the ban), just wanted to know how the ban's going to change my nighttime activites...
Cheers

Other than alcohol may not be available all else should be the same.

Sorry, bad link on my part.
It is very common for the Thai authorities to block sale of alcohol on election days and certain royal/buddhist holidays. Generally when it happens there will be one day with no spirits or it may be a day and a half; i.e. on one of the days sale may resume after midnight. Often, but not always are entertainment venues such as Bangla allowed a little more flexibility.
Other than that it is business as usual.
You can go to the bar and have the same fun and you can stash some beers at your hotel if you need any. ... or use your imagination if you are limited to be served soft drinks.
Another option is to BF a girl for 2 days the night before and spend some relaxing time with her on the day of the ban.
So all in all no need to worry ... unless you can't get through a night without spirits.

Thanks MrDK!
If its just for 1 or 2 days it's no problem...
Was in Patong on the Kings birthday in december and all Bangla was closed, but still we could buy beers and whisky at the 7/11 just across the street, so there was no problem sitting in the bars closest to the street and drink and have fun.

My opinion on this is very different.
It is no where near normal. The bars are closed for 2 full nights and 1 half night. The bars may open on the half night, but I've never seen it when there is a full closure. Patong is full of people wandering around looking for something to do, completely board.
If will be caught by this, start planning now. Maybe a quite get away to Krabi. Pop down to Singapore or KL. Buy a big stack of DVDs to watch in your hotel room.
Just don't plan on being out at a bar for these 4 nights and 2 half nights.

I do speak from limited experience. I have only been in LOS once during an alcohol ban. At that time all was normal except no alcohol, which was OK with me ... and yes, less wild party. It was also my impression that during the last election in December all was open (at least Pattaya), but again no alcohol. Other than that ... I have no real experience.
A first (or even a second) night like this can be a bit of a bummer, but other than that (IMO) plenty of time to line up company and make your own good time.

Bars, discos, and the rest were open as normal (minus booze)? Suppose that is an in country alternative for those that aren't repulsed by the place.

The thing you have to do is just revise your mindset. Make Wednesday and Thursday the new Friday and Saturday, then Friday and Saturday will feel like Sunday and Monday recovery days and so on and so on.
Seriously, it's the new black.

I kinda agree with that - its when they make it unclear wether everything will be closed or not that irks me.
It's like they deliberately don't wont anyone to get around their killjoy antics. And why it should affect farang owned and visited bars i still cannot comprehend?!
[sarcasm] Oh wait....the thai Karaoke bars are closed too...[/sarcasm]

6pm Fri 22nd Feb until midnight Sunday 24th Feb
6pm Sat 1st Mar until midnight Sunday 2nd March.
You are safe unless anymore bans are announced. Rather glad too, as I arrive the day before you.

I was there at Xmas during the Elections and it is a real pain in the ****.
I did a bit of scoping out the days before in restaurants asking them if they would sell and found a very nice restaurant near to the Beach Road with air con and great food and nice company and had a great night with a bottle of wine and a few beers and some good company.
Like a night out with the girlfriend on a Saturday back home in a nice restaurant.
So unless you want to stay in your room watching DVD's which is another good idea, or if you are happy sitting in an empty bar drinking water, then my advice is do your homework the days before.
Regards
Drew

You can easily discount the last days of these dates (midnight time) as we usually can open as normal. But bars may be closed during daytime of that day.

Im still confused with this one...
E-mailed some BG's i met last trip and they didn't know much about this, I asked them if they could check it out and the reply was that they heard the same, but they's still be at work these dates... I dont know, maybe they didn't understand my question or not so interested in politics.
-BUT, if there will be a ban these weekends, anybody of our bar-owning boardmembers throwing a PARTY any of these days?? Don't forget to invite us
