Abu Dhabi

A quick question. The company has just announced I'm flying to Abu Dhabi in the morning and I've no time to research. Been to Dubai, but not AD.

Arrive Friday night around 8, have Saturday off and then work until Tuesday night when I fly back to the UK.

Any must go/do/avoid advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Been to Abu Dhabi many times, but its nowhere near as touristy as Dubai.

If you are travelling alone, its pretty hard to recommend places to visit. If you are after girls, the Al Ain Hotel on the Corniche was the place. Sands Hotel in Hamdan St is a decent place for some beers, along with the Novotel in Electra St. There was a good club on about the 14th floor of the old Abu Dhabi Grand Hotel, but I think the Le Meridien took it over and renamed it. Any taxi driver should know it. Nice beer garden in the Le Meridien Hotel and good food too.

For shopping, visit Hamdan St next to Burger King for copy goods, and the Abu Dhabi Mall is massive for quality gear. Not much sightseeing to be done as its such a new city, although the port area where the Iranian dhows arrive is good for browsing. Sorry I can't really recommend too much more.

Oh, just remembered, don't get caught walking the street drunk..................you could find yourself in a lot of troublewith the police. They do not take kindly to that behaviour in public.

Thanks for that Dawsey. I'll have a wander around on Saturday and drop in a couple of places you mentioned.

Regards,

WN

Abu Dhabi update

Took a trip to Al Ain Palace hotel last night, purely in the interests of research of course. It's like a miniature York Hotel (Dubai) but with the lights turned on. This has both pros (excuse the pun) and cons. You can see what your getting but sometimes ignorance is bliss! Still, plenty of choice in shapes, sizes and nationalities. I spotted Chinese, Filipina, African (one very very scary one, you'd sleep with one eye open in case she got peckish in the night), European and one that looked Cambodian/Laotian but could have been Thai I suppose. Take your pick, but a place to bear in mind for those long hot Arabay nights! And it beats the cra*py band in the Sheraton.

Heading for Sands for early doors after work tonight so I'll check that out. Fly back to the UK tonight, quick turnaround and off to Hong Kong for 2 months on Sunday.

Thanks again for the info Dawsey.

No problem WN. The Al Ain Palace was full of Russian and Filipino girls last time I dropped in. Funny to see the arabs dressed in their dishdash drinking behind bamboo screens . A little hypocritical I thought. Hope the Sands Hotel is a decent watering hole for you.
