I will never use a jetski in phuket after what I saw
Two weeks ago I was laying on the deck chairs at karon beach. When a russian father in early 40's and his 4 yr old son came back to the beach on the jetski that had been using. When they got off the jetski one of the jetski boys accused him of damaging the front of his jetski - as there was a 10 cm crack on the front of the jet ski. The russian father dismissed the accusation and walked back to his deckchair with his son to where his wife was sitting.
The Jetski boy yelled he was calling his boss and he would have to pay. 30 mins later the father decides to packup and go back to the hotel........however the jetski boy screams he can't leave and gets the other jetski boys to start following him up the track as him and his family walked backed before to the main road. At this stage there was 6 jetski boys starting to yell and saying he had to pay even though this guy said he did nothing wrong.
To my mind I can hardly see how this guy would be speeding at top speeds and dangerously with his little boy on the back of the jetski and hence put his son in danger of any sort - just my feelings.
Anyway they were demanding 48,000 baht and as he got near the road a whole heap of jetski boys started running from other parts of the beach to stop this guy. When i looked there were at least 35 jetski guys surrounding the mother, father and little boy and trying to intimidate them and would not let them leave.
The father would not give in and 2 hours later arrived back at the jetski with some lawyer guy - which was my impression to assess the situation. The loud mouthed jetski boy was saying the jetski was only 5 days old and demanded 48,000 baht compensation.
I never saw the outcome as i had to leave but the behaviour of these thugs was absolutely disgusting. God knows how the little boy and wife felt while these thugs tried to scare them into paying up while refusing to let them leave the beach. It really was quite shocking to see
If they did damage the jetski then fair enough- but i could not fathom how a father would be speeding that fast or driving that dangerously to put his little son in danger.
I for one never have and never will rent one of these jet skis just on the principle of the matter. (not the first time i have seen this situation happen)

Your story isn't the first of its kind, and won't be the last. If you are tempted to hire a jetski, carefully inspect it all around, especially below the waterline, and point out any damage. Remember you will not be insured on a jetski, and any accident will cost you dearly.
Intimidation and the like is common if there is a problem, and the Russian guy did well to stick to his guns.
I wonder too what the outcome was. I bet he paid something.

Hope the guy didn't get burnt by the jetski mafia and reported this incident to the police. How many more times are we going to hear this story before action is taken ???

That can depend on who turns up. Chances are they will want a cut of the payout too. I agree that it is an awful practice that should be dealt with.
Whatever happened to the plan to get the jetski boys off the beaches and have them licenced before being allowed back?

Same thing happened to me also last year. I just walked away with my family. They did not come after me. Later the same day I witnessed when a guy returned his rental car at our hotel. The boy from the rental company crawled under the car and pointed out a scratch on the bumper!! I think the guy finally paid a few thousand bahts to get rid of him.
Think twice before renting anything in LOS.

This is not just limited to LOS. Same thing happened to us when we were in Antigua 10 days ago. 3 of us took out Jetski's, had a laugh but no one crashed and they were saying we owed them $200 USD.
As we walked away they tried to intimidate us and make us pay.... But there was about 20 of us from the ship so they didn't get very far and we left!

I have read about these scams in LOS before even arriving just by reading tour guide books. Still holds true and is consistently occurring. Bet the same happens with the boat rentals also.
It is amazing how fast they can assess the damage and come up with the appropriate baht figure to fix it.

500 Baht for a tube of superglue and a bit of makeup to disguise the damage before the next punter takes it out + 47,500 Falang Tax.

Jetskis can be fun but I dont recommend renting one, too many stories about bad behaviour/rip offs.
Simply dont rent one.

Maybe if someone wants to rent one during their vacation, take pictures of the jetski 1st. Then you have some photograhic proof! Would take a minute to take from all angles.... Obviously you cannot picture under the "hood" but it would show them you know what they get up to!! Might be a little deterrent!

No you aren't. I rented one or more in 04, 05 & 06 without a problem. But I made it my business to give the jetski a good look over, and the jetski guys knew why I was looking too.

IMHO anyone who uses a jetski doesn't give a flying feck about the environment or their fellow human beings safety and comfort .... so they don't get any sympathy from me Paulie....every one of these tanks of shi'ite ruins a day out at the beach for hundreds of people
To me its like going out into a national park for a picnic and having some @sshole on a MX bike fly over the top of me..

In 2006 I rented a jet-ski twice.
Once in May and then again in November.
Both times I did not give it a once over. After reading this forum I was silly not too.
Perhaps I was never ripped off because I was down at the beach every day for a week before I hired one.....and was on a "hello" basis with the jet-ski boys.
In November 2007 I did not hire but witnessed the jet-ski boys try and put it over a couple of tourists, which I thought was ordinary behaviour.
And I tend now to be of a similar opinion as "nelsonone" when it comes to the people riding them.
Many of these F#$^ing idiots tear around at dangerous speeds in close proximity to the shore and swimmers....oblivious to the danger and harm they may cause. And when you say something to them they just give a blank F#$^ing idiot look.
Rider beware!

it seems like thais are very good and quick to calculate the sum of the damage...
had a similar problem with a motorbike accident last year.
a TG was driving and we crashed into a car. the owner was jumping out of nowhere and recognized me and demanded 40000 baht because one of his rim had a small scratch or something
even a policeman was standing nearby but he did a fcuk... i'm sure he would get 10% of it

i thought they passed a law to make jet skis illegal in thailand!
anywho they are noisy and unnessesary,if people refuse to rent them then they would have to close up shop, innit.
oh and BTW a lot of the patong jetskis are owned by police.

Yep and prostitution is illegal as well
There was big talk after the tsunami "cleaned" the beach to rebuild it better than before with no jet skis and a limited number of sunbeds. As usual it was only talk.

Never mind the jetskis, who owns the town (or is it just the clever business acumen of their wives? )
