Take out a larger amount, use room safe or safe box to keep the excess. Best not scooting around at night with more than 5k in your pocket. If you need more its a quick trip back to collect. Personall I don't carry more than 2.5k but I'm not out on holiday so its a bit different.

I would advise nearly the exact opposite. Carrying up to 10k baht isn't really that big of a deal as long as you keep it in a few different pockets, don't wave it around like drunken fool, and keep to the main areas in Patong. Withdraw as much as you need every day or two -- the extra cost for any extra withdrawal fees etc. can be considered as an insurance payment. No way in the world would I leave a large amount of cash in ANY in-room safe in ANY hotel. A few valuables etc. okay, but I wouldn't put your family jewels in there!

Hey Suttoh..Thailand is cheap.. food is cheap.. grog is cheap.. accomodation is cheap... girls are cheap......but I will tell you one thing for such a cheap place you can spend a lot of money. ATMs are everywhere so plenty of places to top up.. and trust me you will. I'd only carry up to $5k , your new GF will take care of any extra. Happy days.

Mine is the same kind and you won't have any problems at any ATM where you wish to withdraw...apart from a dwindling bank balance 5555

One other thing suttoh.

Give your bank(s) a call before you leave Oz, let them know you are in Thailand and will be using your card(s). Not much use to you if they have been blocked for overseas use. It can, and does happen.

Also, be on your guard for scams like the one reported here .

Might want to make a call to your bank and let them know you will be on holiday and where you are headed. Some banks have atomatic identity theft deterent. Frequent withdrawels from a foreign country might trip a red flag and shut you down till can get it cleared up. (pain in the...).

As for the room safe. While in Patong one of our rooms had a brand new safe in it!! RIGHT NEXT TO THE OLD ONE THAT HAD BEEN PRY OPEN WITH A CROW BAR classic 555

Oh I believe slampay. It happened to me. Luckily I had another card that had been cleared for overseas use.

Boy, I had a scare about 4 days into my trip. Went to the a.t.m., attempted withdraw, got a big NOCANDO! I had no back up, only a c.c. with no pin. My blood ran backwards.

It seems that you are only alloud so much in a 24 hr period duh! Let's just say my powers of recollection were not at peak levels...

LOS reminds me of a casino...(the jackpots are just different)

One point about ATM's that is different from the UK (don't know about other countries) , in Thailand your cash comes out first then your card a couple of seconds later. In the UK your card is returned then your cash , so have seen people in LOS walk away with cash then suddenly remember they have not got their card back !!!!!
