Ripped of for beach towels at my hotel ?

I have had 7 wonderful days in Horizon hotel in Karon beach but on the last day after spending a day out on a motorbike we arrived back at around 3pm to find our rooms cleaned (as expected) but our 2 hotel supplied beach towels missing. On a normally day the old ones would be taken from the cloth rack on the private balcony and new ones put into the bathroom. But on this day the ones from the cloth rack where missing and we did not have the new ones in the bathroom.

We assumed it was just a innocent mistake by the housekeeper so we went to reception to ask for some new ones. Well them we got told we lost them and will have to replace them for 800 baht. After some more talking we believed it was all cleared up until a few hours later a staff member comes to the door with a invoice for the 2 towels. I was furious and went down to reception to talk top them about it. They insisted there house keeper would not make a mistake like that since she has been with them a long time.

One day the housekeeper left use 3 beach towels. She would forget to refill to tea and coffee satchels every other day. No mistakes hay....

After talking to reception for a good 40 minutes I left to go get some dinner. I "found" "my" 2 dirty beach towels in a dirty washing pile in a section of the motel... I wonder how they got there. To be honest I have no idea if there where the 2 original ones I had. But they where 2 blue beach towels I needed to satisfy the reception desk.

Unfortunately I have no idea how to protect yourself against problems like this. I would of loved to go back to the place but now I will be going else ware. I will also be contacting my travel agent and seeing what they will do about it.

Nice easy scam to carry out and a nice earner if they do it a few times a week and people pay up. If you have found the original towels then you can show them and maybe they'll apologise but surely the hotel must have hundreds of towels and they all look the same.

Complaining to the Manager might make you feel better but he could be in on it too and can't see complaining to the travel agent will achieve anything.

Lucky for me they do and they don't keep them all locked up. The towels I found I just assume are mine for legal reasons.

I expect to get some results from the travel agent. I will be looking for a letter of apology before booking the next holiday with them.

Happened to me when i checked out on my last trip.. Went to lobby to fix bill and was told i had a beach towel missing but as i left i counted them and left them all in a pile with the other towels for the cleaner... They were charging 500baht, i went back up to the room with the manager and found the towel. Got an apology right away and went on my way...

Mate i dont see why the travel agent has to give you a written apology whats it got to do with them????? If anything i think a sorry from the hotel is more than enough....

I paid the travel agent for the holiday. It is there responsibility to provide an acceptable place to stay without these doggy things going on.

They will not want to do it but they will end up doing it to keep my business. They will want to yell at someone for having to do it in the first place. That someone will be there wholesaler from Phuket area for accommodation, the wholesaler will then be talking to the hotel because they just got a serving from there upstream.

There you go...there's another one. Like I said. Such an easy scam to work. It's a numbers game. You got an apology and didn't pay up but there are others who couldn't be bothered to complain as it's just a few 100 baht and will hand over the money.

It's in the mix of scams with the tuktuks; touts on bangla; timeshare sellers; petrol pumps not being zeroed before pumping starts; gemstone sellers on the beach selling bits of glass....and then there's the Farang Added Tax/Double pricing, but that's another story :-)

Hope it didn't spoil your holiday but T.I.T. - This Is Thailand.

iTravel - if you really want to take it further you'd do better writing a letter to the Phuket Gazette; the Thai Hotels Association; the TAT - Tourism Authority of Thailand; or the Mayor of Patong...cough.

Good Luck mate

Had it out in residence before made such a fuss that they had owner show up. They called in 4 house keepers and a laundry girl, they found the 4 towels in 20 min.
Guess its how you deal with it.

Thread has had 81 views so far. Including the OP 2 more have come on saying the same stunt was tried on them.

3 in 81 is 3.7% so you have to think that something like 3,700 out of every 100,000 visitors to Patong are having this.

Of course it won't always be a scam going on. Towels do genuinely go missing or get nicked by the customers.

iT Travel, if the hotel tell the travel agent that there is nothing they can do, then there is no obligation on the travel agent to refund you any money that you have had to pay to replace your towels. I would think your only other avenue would be to claim the 500baht on your travel insurance (if you bothered to take out any).

Only problem is that your excess will be more than 500baht , so you will be better off to pay anyway.

iT Travel, may I suggest nicking 2 dirty beachtowels, hiding them in your suitcase from the 1st day and then if the problem arises you have a back up stock to sort out the problem, every one is happy and no loss of face from either side.

Most places I have normally stayed at supply the towels when you get to the pool and the only towels in the room are for the bathroom. So perhaps you can write a letter to the hotel to suggest that implement that practice

Never had a problem with beach towels, but that could be because I find the ones usually supplied by hotels to be so threadbare that I wander down to OTOP, buy myself a couple of new ones for 300Bt each, and the hotel usually washes them for me!!!
AND I GET TO TAKE THEM HOME!!!!

I know what I would say to you if I was that travel agent. I own a successful business in a service industry and when we get "knobbies" making complaints like that to us the staff know to call me in for my "special" way of dealing with woodducks. It is a simple process, I tell you to get st*ffed and dont come back and you dont, problem solved. You tell all your knobby mates and we dont have to deal with them either.
